Redevelopment of Kathputli colony ( EWS Housing ), Jaipur, Rajasthan, INDIA

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
The rajasthani puppets, bangles and bottles which are not only known to be of excellent craftmanship in the
whole indian subcontinent but even in many parts of the world, are given birth by the hands of those under-
priveleged who spend their lives with an unknown future. These skilled artists continue to live in areas deprived
of basic facilities like toilets, safe drinking water, electricity while their art travels the whole world. Kathputli
Nagar, Jaipur houses these artisans who depict the secularity of the country in itself and also live in harmony
with each other. But these people do deserve a basic lifestyle with some security about the future. This belief
gives purpose to the project of improving the lifestyle of these craftspersons and giving them a proper platform
to showcase their talent without having to fight for the same.

INTENDED DESIGN OUTCOME

housing for them. To provide them with a proper place to showcase the talents they have got and to prevent

The proposed methods for integrating women empowerment into the redevelopment projects include providing skilled jobs to women in their areas of interest, such as craft and entrepreneurship, as part of the development initiatives like the Abhyudaya Centre . These projects aim to ensure women have the opportunity to gain employment and generate income through participating in local enterprises, such as tourism and craft markets . This not only empowers women economically but also socially by recognizing and enhancing their role in cultural preservation and economic development .

Abhaneri's location within the "Golden Triangle" of tourism, consisting of Jaipur, Delhi, and Agra, presents strategic advantages by positioning it within a major tourist corridor that attracts a significant number of international and domestic tourists . This proximity allows easy access for tourists to visit not only the well-known attractions but also explore the unique cultural and historical offerings of Abhaneri, such as the Chand Baori . As part of this prime tourism circuit, Abhaneri can leverage increased foot traffic to promote local crafts and culture, boosting economic opportunities for the community .

The proposed redevelopment of Kathputli Colony aims to support artisans and craftsmen by providing low-cost housing and a stable platform to showcase their skills, thus preventing migration due to financial instability . The project includes facilities such as an amphitheater, art and craft exhibition areas, and selling booths/weekly markets that provide artisans the opportunity to sell their crafts directly . Offering a sense of community and security about their future livelihood encourages these skilled artisans to continue their traditional craftsmanship .

Implementing skill development programs for youth as proposed for the Abhyudaya Centre could have significant societal impacts, fostering economic growth and cultural preservation. By equipping young people with tourism-related skills, the programs can empower them to engage in self-employment and community-driven enterprises, reducing rural-to-urban migration . This empowerment can lead to revitalized local economies and strengthened rural societies, as well as the sustained transmission of cultural knowledge. Additionally, these programs can cultivate a sense of identity and belonging among the youth, as they contribute actively to preserving their community's cultural heritage .

Declaring certain villages as "Special Heritage Villages" or "Special Craft Villages" aims to promote these areas as unique destinations for experiential tourism, thereby preserving and showcasing local art and culture . The designation would involve identifying villages with significant cultural, ecological, or craft traditions and promoting them extensively in international and domestic markets as hubs of unique cultural experiences . This initiative would support the livelihoods of local artisans and craftsmen, enhance tourism, and help preserve cultural heritage .

Declaring Abhaneri as a "Special Heritage Village" could lead to both positive and challenging environmental and social implications. Environmentally, it could encourage the preservation and protection of natural landscapes and historical sites, fostering sustainable tourism practices . Socially, it may enhance the cultural identity and pride among residents by recognizing and promoting their heritage on a larger stage . However, it could also lead to challenges such as increased tourist traffic that might strain local resources and infrastructure, necessitating careful management to prevent negative impacts on the community and environment .

The thesis proposes the Abhyudaya Centre as a social-cultural hub aimed at preserving the cultural heritage of Abhaneri village by providing a platform for locals to showcase their craftsmanship and tradition . Skill development programs targeted at youth are planned to increase community participation and promote self-employment through tourism-related activities . Additionally, the Centre is intended to facilitate cultural exchange by offering a space for villagers to share knowledge and experiences, thereby reconnecting them with their heritage .

Tourism plays a crucial role in the thesis proposal for Abhaneri by promoting local craftsmanship as part of experiential tourism. It aims to attract tourists not only for aesthetic enjoyment of landmarks like Chand Baori but also for learning about local culture and traditions . The increased tourist activity is expected to enhance economic opportunities for local craftsmen by promoting their skills and crafts on international and domestic platforms, and directly marketing these unique cultural assets .

The thesis addresses challenges related to youth migration from Abhaneri by identifying the gradual loss of cultural tradition and skills as key issues driving migration. It suggests that the lack of lucrative opportunities in rural areas leads youngsters to migrate to urban centers . To counter this, the thesis proposes skill development programs and tourism-related activities that offer self-employment opportunities, thereby encouraging the youth to stay and actively participate in preserving and transmitting their cultural heritage . By fostering a sense of community and economic viability, it seeks to mitigate the trend of migrating in search of better living conditions.

The thesis addresses cultural extinction issues arising from urban migration and digital advancements by proposing the establishment of centers like the Abhyudaya Centre, which serve as both preservation and revitalization platforms for local culture . By fostering skill development and entrepreneurship, these centers aim to create economic opportunities within the village, persuading youth to remain and contribute to their local economy instead of seeking better prospects in urban settings . Furthermore, connecting traditional crafts with modern tourism markets through experiential tourism initiatives helps sustain the cultural heritage amidst rapid technological progress .
