TEAM PROBLEMS
1. What are some things Colin could have done in or after the meeting when Henri verbally attacked
him?
Conflict in a team is unavoidable, but confrontation and verbal attacks are an inappropriate way
to express differences. Well, one way to get rid of this kind of conflicts is to communicate privately.
After Henri verbally attacked Colin in the meeting, Colin felt upset that's why he immediately
told to Jack what happened that day without telling Henri that he's upset the way he treated him.
Colin should've talk to his team leader first before the project manager. He should addressed what he
felt after the meeting in order for Henri to be aware on what he's saying in front of others and for him
to be mindful on the things that he will do in making confrontations. By this, Colin will know the
reason behind those attacks and will solve the problem immediately together with his team leader.
Also, Colin could also talk to his team members not on the other teams. If he's tired discussing with
his team leader or tired of hearing inappropriate words, better to talk with his team leaders and ask for
advices on what he might do the next time Henri will give him a tasks in order to do it correctly and
to avoid conflict. With this, Colin might also feel better after talking to a colleague.
2. Is there anything more Raouf could have done during or after his meeting with Colin to prevent
the situation from escalating?
Henri’s tirade made Colin mad resulting for him to talk about what happened in the meeting with
Raouf--his friend who happened is working from different department. Raouf could have been calmly
listen to the rants of Colin and after hearing those he could have made Colin calm first before starting
to suggest things on how they could resolve the problem in a proper way. He should have not talk
more about being against with Henri resulting for Colin to be more trigger with what had happened
instead Raouf could have been mediated between Henri and Colin after the meeting if he wanted to
diffuse the situation. If Colin had addressed his concern to their leaders in a more proper way without
angriness, the escalation of the situation could have been prevented.
3. Could Jack have handled his meeting with Colin in a better way? Was there anything Jack could
have done after his meeting with Colin and before he met with Henri? What are some things Jack
could have done in his meeting with Henri?
Jack could have been handled his meeting with Colin in a better way like letting Colin sit first so
that he could calm himself as he tells his concerns with Jack. Telling “have some seat” to an
employee will let him feel that his concerns are being addressed properly. Though Jack had only
limited time, offering a seat is not time consuming at all. After hearing and meeting Colin, Jack
should have done some investigations about what really happened before having a meeting with
Henri to avoid some misunderstandings like Jack is taking sides. It was also said in the situation that
Henri’s tirade is not new to all and this must be addressed immediately to avoid future conflicts and
in order for that to happen that investigation is really needed.
Jack being the project manager, he should have done the meeting in a formal way since the thing
that they’ll be talking about is all about their project and not family matters. They must separate
things on works and in homes and having an own problem isn’t a reason to invalidate one’s feelings.
The way Jack approached Henri made him feel like he had done nothing wrong wherein there is. Jack
should have addressed the concerns Colin had stated one by one to Henri and together they’ll have
solution that will be told to everyone.
4. What should Fatima do?
In our opinion, Fatima should verify first what Colin had told her since she was not able to hear it
herself. Also, she should not respond to that statement negatively to avoid stirring up some trouble.
She should ask Jack if everything is alright and if there is something to improve to keep the schedule
on track and to make the project better. Hence, she and her team should continue to work diligently
and avoid any conflict with others as much as possible.
