HSENG 065 – English Fundamentals 1

Santa Ana College School of Continuing Education

Spring 2021 (Online)

General Information:
Instructor: John Tashima
Email: tashima_john@[Link]
Phone: 714-241-5759
Office hours: by appointment
Class dates: 1/25/21 to 3/21/21 (8 weeks)

Course Description:
This class will help you reach your educational goals by building upon your knowledge
of grammar, parts of speech, and vocabulary. We will review grammar rules and practice
writing sentences and paragraphs that clearly convey your ideas. We will practice
reading challenging texts and writing about what we read. My goal is for you to leave
this class confident in your skills and ready to succeed.

Course Objectives:
o Students will identify and produce proper grammar, mechanics, and format in
sentences and letters.
o Students will classify four different types of sentences.

Student Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, students will be able to:
• Write sentences with a minimal number of local and global errors
• Write a letter that clearly conveys an idea and requests action be taken
• Correctly use sentences to convey information, ask questions, request action, and
express feelings.

Class Format:
This class will be conducted online using the “asynchronous” format. This means that
there are no scheduled class meetings; instead, students are expected to log on a few
times a week to learn concepts, practice, and complete assignments. Our class uses the
Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) and you can access it here: class link. To
log in, you will need the WebAdvisor ID and password that you received when you
enrolled.

If you’ve never taken an online class before, don’t worry! You will receive plenty of
help from me and your classmates over the next few weeks. Aside from the instructional
activities, you will be posting weekly to the class discussion board where you will
participate in activities with your classmates. If you have questions, you can post to our
class questions discussion board where you will receive an answer from me or one of

your peers. Finally, you can always make an appointment to speak with me online via
video chat.

Time Commitment/Attendance:
The class runs for eight weeks. There is one “module” for each week of class. The class
requires a commitment of approximately nine hours a week. There will be assignments
due every Friday and Sunday; however, during the week you can do the work when it is
convenient for you as there are no live class meetings. Because this class serves students
with a wide range of experience, there will be optional assignments for those who would
like the extra practice, which can take up to an additional twelve hours a week. Again,
these assignments are optional, just for extra practice, and are not graded.

If you begin to fall behind in class, please contact me as soon as possible for a non-
judgmental discussion of your options and the best path forward.

Grading:
Letter grade scale:
A 90-100%
B 80-89%
C 70-79%
D 60-69%
F 59% or below

This class is graded on a point system, which breaks down like this:

Unit quizzes 25%

Discussion board 20%
Writing assignment 25%
Final exam 30%

Each of these is explained in more detail below:

Unit quizzes:
Each week, you will work on one module consisting of several activities and
“practice quizzes.” You must complete all activities and pass each practice quiz
with a score of 70% or above to qualify for the unit quiz. Each unit quiz will
cover the materials from one module. Once the unit quiz is taken, the score is
recorded, and the student is ready for the next module.

Discussion board:
There will be a discussion board assignment due every Friday. This assignment
requires you to post a multi-sentence response to a writing prompt. Then, by
Sunday, you need to read a few of your classmates’ posts and post a reply to at
least two of them. The topics are quite varied but focus on helping you grow as a
writer. Here is a link to the first discussion board in case you want to take a look.

2
Writing assignments:
You will also be assigned a writing assignment every week. This assignment will
be evaluated based on one of the following rubrics.

Final exam:
The last week of class you will have time to study for the final exam. The final
exam covers all the material from the unit quizzes.

In Canvas, you can access your grades by looking at “Grades” in the Navigation bar.

Required Equipment:
No textbooks are required for this course. All learning materials and assessments will be
provided.

It is best to access Canvas on a computer or tablet (such as an iPad). You can also use a
smartphone, but these smaller devices might make it difficult to do some of the activities.
There are Canvas apps available on Windows, iOS (Apple), and Android. If you use a
web browser, we recommend an up-to-date version of Firefox or Chrome. We also
recommend running this Computer Readiness Test. More information on required
equipment is available here. Of course, it is also important to have internet access,
broadband, if possible.

A webcam and microphone are useful if you would like to make an appointment for
virtual office hours. Our school has a technology support page and a general student
support page that you can visit.

I will provide documents in multiple formats, including .pdf. To read .pdf files, you will
need Adobe software, available for free.

Academic Honesty:
It is important to read and understand the Santa Ana College Academic Honesty Policy.
Any student caught cheating or helping another student cheat will receive a zero for the
assignment or exam. Students who are caught cheating a second time will be reported to
the Dean of Student Development. Please don’t cheat! If you have any questions about
this policy, please let me know immediately.

Accommodations for Disabilities:

Santa Ana College is committed to providing an equitable environment for all students.
If you have a disability that may impact your ability to succeed in this course, please let
me know as soon as possible. Also, please contact Disabled Student Programs and
Services (DSPS) so that you receive the accommodations you need. The phone number
for DSPS is 714-564-6295.

Common questions

Students might face challenges such as technology access issues, lack of direct personal interaction, and difficulties in self-regulating their study schedules in the online learning environment . The instructor addresses these challenges by providing technology support links and suggesting resources like the Canvas Learning Management System and its compatible devices . The instructor also offers flexible video chat appointments for personalized support and encourages use of discussion boards to foster a sense of community . These strategies help mitigate the inherent challenges of an online learning format, aiming to provide both technical support and a space for student interaction.

The course design encourages interaction among students primarily through the weekly discussion board assignments, which require students to post responses and reply to classmates . This interaction fosters a collaborative learning environment where students can share diverse perspectives and provide feedback on each other's ideas . Such exchanges can enhance critical thinking skills and allow learners to articulate their thoughts more clearly. Collaboration and discourse through these forums could lead to a deeper understanding of course content as students learn from their peers' insights and experiences.

The course includes optional assignments that provide additional practice for students who desire extra help or wish to deepen their understanding of the material . These assignments cater to diverse learning preferences by allowing students to focus on areas where they feel less confident or wish to excel further . By offering these assignments as optional and ungraded, the course respects varying student workloads while providing opportunities for deeper engagement without the pressure of additional grading. This approach supports personalized learning paths and can motivate students to take initiative in their studies.

The course objectives and student learning outcomes in the English Fundamentals course are designed to seamlessly align to enhance students' writing skills. Objectives such as identifying and producing proper grammar, mechanics, and sentence format directly support the learning outcome of writing sentences with minimal errors . Additionally, the emphasis on classifying different sentence types and writing letters that clearly convey ideas correlates with outcomes of using sentences effectively for various communicative purposes . This alignment ensures that students develop foundational skills that contribute towards creating coherent and effective written communication.

Requiring specific equipment and technology access ensures that students can fully engage with the course content and complete learning activities effectively. For instance, using a computer or tablet is recommended for better performance than a smartphone, as some activities may be difficult to execute on smaller devices. This ensures that students can participate in all aspects of the course without technological barriers . Additionally, having broadband internet and familiarity with tools like Adobe Reader are necessary for accessing course materials in different formats, which helps prevent technology from hindering student success .

The academic honesty policy plays a crucial role in fostering a fair learning environment by setting clear expectations regarding the integrity of student work. It deters cheating by establishing consequences, such as receiving a zero for the first offense and reporting subsequent offenses to the Dean . This policy underscores the importance of developing genuine skills and knowledge, rather than resorting to dishonest methods . By promoting ethical conduct, the policy helps maintain a level playing field where all students are evaluated based on their true abilities, thereby ensuring equity in academic assessment.

The course is predominantly asynchronous, with no scheduled meetings, allowing for flexible learning but potentially limiting real-time interactive language practice . This format could be beneficial for students who prefer managing their own learning pace. However, language acquisition often benefits from immediate feedback and interactive exercises, typically found in synchronous settings. The course compensates for this by using discussion boards and optional video chats, which provide some interaction albeit not in real-time . Overall, while the asynchronous model supports independent study, its effectiveness might vary based on student discipline and motivation, and additional synchronous opportunities could enhance language skill acquisition by offering more immediate practice and feedback.

The grading breakdown of the English Fundamentals course—unit quizzes (25%), discussion board (20%), writing assignments (25%), and final exam (30%)—implies a balanced emphasis on both formative and summative assessments . This structure likely encourages consistent engagement throughout the course, as students must actively participate in weekly discussions and complete ongoing assignments to perform well . This could lead to higher levels of student engagement, as it requires regular interaction with course materials and peers.

The asynchronous format of the English Fundamentals course provides students with flexibility as it allows them to access course materials and complete assignments on their own schedule, rather than having set class meeting times . This format can be particularly beneficial for students who have other commitments, such as jobs or family responsibilities, as it enables them to manage their time more effectively. Asynchronous learning also encourages self-directed study, which can improve learning outcomes by promoting skills such as time management and self-motivation .

Rubrics serve as a transparent framework for assessing writing assignments, providing students with clear criteria and expectations for performance . They help ensure consistency and fairness in grading by outlining specific elements such as grammar, organization, and clarity that are evaluated . The use of rubrics can significantly impact student learning by clarifying learning goals, showing students where to focus their efforts, and helping them understand the components of quality writing. Moreover, rubrics can guide students in self-assessment and foster a more objective reflection on their work, leading to targeted improvements and enhanced writing capabilities.
