SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
➢ Solid waste management is a term that is used to refer to the process of collecting and treating solid wastes. It also
offers solutions for recycling items that do not belong to garbage or trash. As long as people have been living in
settlements and residential areas, garbage or solid waste has been an issue. Waste management is all about how
solid waste can be changed and used as a valuable resource.
➢ Rising population, technological advancement, economical , industrial revolution and changing life style has lead to
various types of environmental problems. In this context sold waste is one of the major problem.
➢ It causes different type of pollution, spreading of various disease and due to dumping of solid waste soil also loose
it's fertility .
➢ Solid wastes are those organic and inorganic waste materials produced by various activities of the society.
➢ Improper solid waste management affects on public health, causes environmental pollution, accelerates natural
resources degradation, climate change and greatly impacts the quality of life of human beings.
➢ Nashik is the third most industrialized city in Maharashtra after Mumbai and Pune. Keeping the above facts in view
overall integrated solid waste management facility was created. The solid waste generated is greater than 3 lakh
Matic tones per year which is a very huge quantity of solid waste generation.
➢ SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT IN NASHIK
➢ All the solid waste brought from every ward in Nasik is brought at Municipal Solid Waste facility at Pathardi
where it is processed there after sorting it.
➢ Nasik Municipal Corporation has abolished waste bins system and has an introduced door to door collection of
waste through “Ghantagadis vehicles with the bells from 1996. Total of Ghantagadis more than 120 are on
contract which receives waste from householders which is sorted out the recyclable material from it
➢ This project of Municipal Solid Waste Management has made city free from waste bins system.
➢ The collected solid waste is transported to compost plant where it is mechanically segregated and processed
to produce fine quality of compost. 40% non biodegradable material which can not be converted into compost
is transported to sanitary landfills sight
COLLECTION OF SOLID WASTE IN NASHIK(MH) INDIA CITY
➢ NMC has given contract of collection and transportation of solid waste of the 6 divisions of the city to two
contractors.
➢ Contract of collection and transportation includes door to door collection of solid waste through Ghanta Gadi
and transportation to Municipal Solid Waste Treatment Facility.
➢ Solid waste is collected from 2.9 lakh households of 108 wards of the city through 124 Ghanta Gadi’s and
ownership of the Ghanta Gadi’s is with NMC.
➢ Methods of Dispose of Solid Waste- In Nasik Municipal Corporation, whatever the solid waste is collected, it is sorted in
two major types-First one the waste which is not useful for any good purpose i.e. rejects non-recyclable materials, it
collects in the landfill. It is known as “Nonbiodegradable solid waste”.
➢ Second one is the waste which is utilized for any good purpose, it is sorted out separately i.e. it is use to make manure.
➢ For apartments, solid waste is mostly collected by a designated person from door to door and then disposed to the
ghantgadi.
Kuccha road
➢ Ghantagadi will arrive from the pathardi dumping yard to the site
Secondary road
➢ It will collect all the waste disposal from the secondary road of
Main road the site.
Road junction ➢ The collected waste will be carried to the pathardi dumping yard.
STORM WATER DRAINAGE SYSTEM
A storm drain is defined as that portion of the storm drainage system that receives
runoff from inlets and conveys the runoff to some point where it is then discharge into a
channel, water body, or piped system.
It consists of one or more pipes connecting one or more inlets. A storm drain may be a
closed conduit, open-conduit, or some combination of the two.
Purpose of storm drain is to collect storm water runoff from the roadway and convey it
to an outfall. Storm drain design generally consists of three major parts:
-System planning which include data gathering and outfall location
-pavement drainage which includes pavement geometrics and inlet spacing
-location and sizing of the mains and manholes
PROCESS:
Runoff collection treatment storage distribution end user
In Nashik where problem of water logging occur frequently. Due to this there is major
loss of property and deterioration of road, which affect the economy of the city.
In Nashik Municipal Corporation area there is no comprehensive storm water drainage
system available.
The ground slopes are steep in certain areas, especially near the Godavari and its
tributaries. The average low-lying ground level is 569 m. and the highest ground elevation
is at 700 m.
The old city is located at low-lying areas while the developed areas are mostly on higher
grounds. There are 3 main River basins in corporation area as under –
1) The Godavari River flows west to East across approx. 18 kms. Of the central area of the
city. Nearly 8 nallas meet the river Godavari in this stretch
2) The river Nasardi also flows west to east and joins the Godavari on the south bank at
Takli.
3) The river Darna flows at the South – Eastern boundary of NMC.
Godavari, Nasardi and Waldevi are the three major rivers, which traverse through Nashik
Municipal Corporation area. Darna River lies outside the project boundary.
As per topography, the entire region under study is divided into three different sub-basins
namely Godavari Sub-basin, Waldevi Sub-basin and Nasardi Subbasin. Various nallas I
stream lying in these sub-basins carry rainwater from the basin area and discharge into
respective rivers.
Most of these nallas are untrained and NMC have constructed pucca pitching I lining in
few of the nallas.
It has been observed that due to rapid urbanization, unplanned building construction
activities, has caused blocking or reduction in waterways of the nalla.
Roadside storm water drains exist at few locations only especially in the highly developed
city area.
During heavy rains inundation and flooding are observed at number of locations where
natural course of nail as are contracted due to unplanned and phased development
activities.
Under the prevailing circumstances, there is an urgent need to provide a well-planned
storm water drainage system in the corporation area.
