TCM 777 BIM in Construction Operation
Coursework Assignment (100marks)
i. The aim is to ensure that each candidate the use of a BIM process using ORION or
PROTASTRUCTURES. We will not be able to test teamwork or a practical
construction scenario, but feel free to collaborate with your classmates to help
develop your schemes,
Use BIM for construction system design;
Role of BIM for site utilisation planning;
Analyse BIM for phase planning;
Simulate construction schedules and logistics using BIM to communicate and
evaluate project activities;
Apply BIM for buildability scenario forecasting, including interference management
and clash detection
ii. Attached to your name/ matriculation number is an AutoCAD floor plan, which you
will subject to a BIM process to obtain project documentation.
Submission
i. You are required to submit a report not exceeding 20 pages with illustrations, that
you can express your results in sketches and diagrams and will be able to produce
working details for construction. Care for Clarity and Neatness will be considered.
(15marks).
ii. Using the residential floor plan attached to you name, give a proposal four suspended
floors, Give a sample page of slab, beam, column and pad foundation calculations.
(15marks)
iii. Floor slab and beam layout of a typical floor. The bending schedules for floor slab,
the floor beam and the columns. (15marks)
iv. Project scheduling, assume the 10cu.m/day of concrete can be placed, Formwork is
60sq.m/day and 1500kg/day of steel can be fixed, make a project schedule for
construction of the structural carcass. (15marks)
v. Project costing of structural carcass with, Concrete at N42000/cu.m., Steel at
N365/kg, Formwork at N3850/sq.m, (15marks).
vi. At the end of the design, the client wants to know how much the foundation will cost
using 400mm diameter piles, 12m long and costing N165,000 to install each pile.

Each pile can support 300kN in compression. Please calculate the formwork,
concrete and reinforcement in the piles separately. You may ignore the ground raft
slab and the earthworks. (15marks)
vii. I will be available online or in class on 8th to 10th of February if you have any queries.
viii. Add sketches wherever appropriate to reinforce your presentation and explanations
ix. Please take careful note of the schedule attached for each candidate and let me have
your queries and comments.
x. Please use the attached coversheet to submit the course work, kindly replace the
accented name and matric number with your details. All calculations are on sheets
of A4 sized paper, written on one side only. All drawings are either hand-drawn or
using a CAD format, on A3 size paper placed in appropriate title block stating
drawing title, name and matriculation number.
xi. Coursework Submission at the departmental office for the attention of Dr Labiran in
hardcopy. The pdf format to the WhatsApp forum on or before February 15th 2021,
12noon. No extensions please. (10marks).
