VLAN Implementation

VLAN Implementation

VLAN is short for Virtual Local Area Network is one of the new network technologies

which have been created during the past few years. VLAN has begun to get recognition just

recently. As the network grown in size and complexity, many companies use VLAN to provide a

way to logically structure their network. A VLAN is a collection of nodes that are grouped

together in a single broadcast domain that is based on something other than physical location. It

is a switched network that is logically segmented on an organizational basis; either by function,

project teams, or applications rather than on a physical or geographical basic.

Members who belong to the same VLAN can communicate as if they were attached to the

same wire, while they may be located on different physical LANs. In addition, because a VLAN

form broadcast domains, members of a VLAN enjoy the connectivity, shared services and

security associated with physical LANs. Changing a member from one VLAN to another is done

through software rather than physically unplugging and moving devices or wires.

There are a few important matters a person should be familiar with implementing a VLAN.

To produce a VLAN you require a layer 2 switch. These exists a popular misunderstanding, that

separate software set up is needed for using VLAN through a network. Therefore, a VLAN can

be thought of as a broadcast domain that exists within a defined set of switches. Because

switches recently become more cost effective, many companies are replacing their flat hub

networks with a pure switched network and VLAN environment. Assigning each port of every

switch to VLAN generally products VLANs. Based on the network infrastructure and security

policies the job of VLANs can be implemented utilizing two different techniques.

Static or Dynamic memberships: Static VLANs-Network Administrator statically

configures the VLAN port job. VLAN memberships on the switch port are designated on a port-

by-port basis. Dynamic VLANs- A VLAN management policy server automatically assigns

VLAN ports. The MAC address of node is utilized to find out the VLAN task. There are some

stages involved in the configuration of VLAN. Grouping Ports in VLANs, Inter routing among

VLANs, Subnet and VLANs configuration, Virtual Trunk Protocol arrangement, Setting Links

(UCDAVIS NETWORK 21).The advantages of developing VLAN is the advantages of using a

VLAN incorporate Improved Management Efficiency, Virtual Group Model, Decrease in

Routing for Broadcasting, and Increased Network Safety.

VLAN Trunk Links segmenting a LAN with switches involves the creation of at least two

VLANs across two or more switches. After the VLANs are created, any information that needs

to be shared is done by using a trunking protocol, so that all the switches involved in a VLAN

are fully aware of the VLAN, it hosts, and the location of the host so that each switch is ready to

support it. By default, trunking protocols used to pass information between switches are disabled

on all ports. Therefore, before a VLAN can be configured between two switches, trunking must

be enabled on the ports to be used to connect the switches together. A trunk line would carry the

combined traffic of one or more VLANs to another switch or router. The two most commonly

used in trunking method are: Inter-Switch Link (ISL) and the [Link] two are method are

used on Cisco networks are IEE 802.10 (FDDI) and a ATM-based protocol called LANE (LAN

Emulation).

VLAN Trunking protocols works well for a small number of switches with limited number

of VLANS. In large network environment that has a large number of switches and requires

several VLANs it can be difficult to maintain the configuration on each switch. Created by

Cisco, VTP is a layer 2 messaging protocol that is utilized to add, get rid of or change VLANs on

a Network. VTP offers automatic distribution of VLAN descriptions from the core switch to the

distribution switches. This let the client to describe the VLANs once, on the core switch, and get

the VLAN description automatically distribute to all distribution switches on the network. As

soon as the VLAN description had spread to distribution switch, it would after that possible start

assigning ports to the VLAN.

Segment the network into clear broadcast groups by VLAN and thus making sure safety of

machine important data. Additionally VLANs are used with private port switching. To secure

your network from users adding switches to your VTP domain, you can use passwords. Every

switch must be set up with the same password.

VLAN has additional advantages, the greatest one being, it gets rid of the physical border.

The sole criteria are meticulous planning is needed during VLAN execution. A VLAN can’t

forward traffic to different VLAN. Therefore, when intending to use a Virtual Local Area

Network one should think about the following factors. Enumeration of VLAN Implementation

Planning involves the understanding LANs membership, finest way for communicating VLAN

membership details throughout multiple switches, automatic arrangement, mapping between

virtual connection and physical connection, make sure the configuration consistence, and traffic

examination and management under VLAN.

Depending on all these elements a Network Engineer or a specialist can determined which

will be the perfect method to go about I execution of a VLAN depending on the infrastructure of

the company that is to be group to the network.

Title of Paper

Begin your paper with the introduction. The active voice, rather than passive voice, should

be used in your writing.

This template is formatted according to APA Style guidelines, with one inch top, bottom,

left, and right margins; Times New Roman font in 12 point; double-spaced; aligned flush left;

and paragraphs indented 5-7 spaces. The page number appears one inch from the right edge on

the first line of each page, excluding the Figures page.

Headings

Use headings and subheadings to organize the sections of your paper. The first heading

level is formatted with initial caps and is centered on the page. Do not start a new page for each

heading.

Subheading

Subheadings are formatted with italics and are aligned flush left.

Citations

Source material must be documented in the body of the paper by citing the authors and

dates of the sources. The full source citation will appear in the list of references that follows the

body of the paper. When the names of the authors of a source are part of the formal structure of

the sentence, the year of the publication appears in parenthesis following the identification of the

authors, for example, Smith (2001). When the authors of a source are not part of the formal

structure of the sentence, both the authors and years of publication appear in parentheses,

separated by semicolons, for example (Smith and Jones, 2001; Anderson, Charles, & Johnson,

2003). When a source that has three, four, or five authors is cited, all authors are included the

first time the source is cited. When that source is cited again, the first author’s surname and “et

al.” are used. See the example in the following paragraph.

Use of this standard APA style “will result in a favorable impression on your instructor”

(Smith, 2001). This was affirmed again in 2003 by Professor Anderson (Anderson, Charles &

Johnson, 2003).

When a source that has two authors is cited, both authors are cited every time. If there are

six or more authors to be cited, use the first author’s surname and “et al.” the first and each

subsequent time it is cited. When a direct quotation is used, always include the author, year, and

page number as part of the citation. A quotation of fewer than 40 words should be enclosed in

double quotation marks and should be incorporated into the formal structure of the sentence. A

longer quote of 40 or more words should appear (without quotes) in block format with each line

indented five spaces from the left margin.1

Entries are organized alphabetically by surnames of first authors and are formatted with a

hanging indent. Most reference entries have three components:

1. Authors: Authors are listed in the same order as specified in the source, using surnames

and initials. Commas separate all authors. When there are seven or more authors, list

the first six and then use “et al.” for remaining authors. If no author is identified, the

title of the document begins the reference.

2. Year of Publication: In parenthesis following authors, with a period following the

closing parenthesis. If no publication date is identified, use “n.d.” in parenthesis

following the authors.

3. Source Reference: Includes title, journal, volume, pages (for journal article) or title, city

of publication, publisher (for book).
