Answer all questions

1. There are 32 students in the woodwind section of the school orchestra. 11 students can play the flute, 15
can play the clarinet, and 12 can play the saxophone. 2 can play the flute and the saxophone, 2 can play the
flute and the clarinet, and 6 can play the clarinet and the saxophone. 2 students can play all three
instruments.
Find the number of students who can play:
a. none of the instruments mentioned
b. only the saxophone
c. the saxophone and the clarinet, but not the flute
d. only one of the clarinet, saxophone, or flute. [5 marks]

2. In a particular region, most farms have livestock and crops. A survey of 21 farms showed that 15 grow
crops, 9 have cattle, and 11 have sheep. 4 have sheep and cattle, 7 have cattle and crops, and 8 have
sheep and crops. 3 have cattle, sheep, and crops.
Display this information on a Venn diagram.
Find the number of farms with:
a. only crops
b. only animals
c. exactly one type of animal, and crops. [5 marks]

3. Let 𝝃 = {𝑥 ∈ Z + : 𝑥 ≤ 40}, P = {factors of 𝟐𝟖}, and Q = {factors of 𝟑𝟔},

a List the elements of:
(a) (i) P (a) (ii) Q (a) ( iii) P ∩ Q (a) iv P ∪ Q
(b) Illustrate the sets P and Q on a Venn diagram. [5 marks]

4. A school has 560 students. During Term 1, 229 of them were absent for at least one day due to
sickness, and 111 students missed some school because of family holidays. 296 students attended
every day of Term 1.
a. Display this information on a Venn diagram.
b. Find the number of students who were away:
(i) for both sickness and holidays
(ii) for holidays but not sickness
(iii) during Term 1 for any reason. [5 marks]

5. The main courses at a restaurant all contain rice or onion. Of the 23 choices, 17 contain onion and
15 contain rice. Display this information on a Venn diagram.
How many dishes contain both rice and onion? [5 marks]
6. In a car club, 13 members drive a manual and 15 members have a sunroof on their car. 5 have
manual cars with a sunroof, and 5 have neither.
(a) Display this information on a Venn diagram.
How many members:
(b)(i) are in the club
(b)(ii) drive a manual car without a sunroof
(b)(iii) do not drive a manual car? [5 marks]

7. All attendees of a camp left something at home. 12 forgot to bring their towel, and 23 forgot their
hat. Of the 30 campers, how many had neither a hat nor a towel?
Display this information on a Venn diagram. [5 marks]

8. At a conference, the 58 delegates speak many different languages. 28 speak Arabic, 27 speak Chinese,
and 39 speak English. 12 speak Arabic and Chinese, 16 speak both Arabic and Chinese, 17 speak both
Arabic and English. 2 speak all three languages.
(a) Display this information on a Venn diagram.
How many delegates speak:
(b)(i) Chinese only
(b)(ii) none of these languages
(b)(iii) neither Arabic nor Chinese? [5 marks]

9. 40 students were asked what life skills they had. 15 could

swim, 12 could drive, and 23 could cook. 9 could cook and
swim, 5 could swim and drive, and 6 could drive and cook.
There was 2 students who could do all three. Find the number
of students who:
(a) could only cook
(b) could not do any of these things
(c) had exactly two life skills.

This can be assessed by subtracting the farms with cattle, sheep, and crops from the number of farms with cattle and either type of crops, being only crops. With multiple calculations subtract the triple-overlap farms from each situation, arriving at the number for the unique situation as 4 farms .

The number of farms with only livestock (animals) can be found by subtracting farms with overlapping features from the total number of crop farms. Out of 21 farms, those with only livestock equals farms with only crops subtracted from those having either crops or no crops, leading to 21 - 15 = 6 farms with only animals .

To find the number of farms with exactly one type of animal along with crops, consider the sets of farms with cattle and crops, sheep and crops, and those with cattle, sheep, and crops. Subtract those that have two types or more from each scenario thus: (7 - 3) for cattle, (8 - 3) for sheep. Therefore, 7 farm for cattle and crops only, and 8 farms for sheep and crops only. This indicates 5 total farms have exactly one animal and grow crops .

Calculation of manual car drivers without a sunroof is determined by subtracting those who have both manual cars with sunroofs from total manual car drivers. Thus, 13 manual drivers - 5 both = 8 drive a manual car without a sunroof .

The number of students who can only play the saxophone is calculated by taking the total number of saxophone players, subtracting those who play both the saxophone and clarinet, the saxophone and flute, and all three instruments. Therefore, 12 - 6 - 2 - 2 = 2 students can only play the saxophone .

From cooking, driving and swimming distribute overlap, where 9 cook and swim, 5 swim and drive, 6 drive and cook, subtract overlap in all three life skills (2 students) for each counted skill, yields exactly two skills = 4 students .

Subtracting the sums of all delegates speaking these languages including overlaps from the total, Arabic total 28, Chinese 27 duplicating by exclusive overlaps plus the sum revealed by (28 + 27 - 12 - 16 - 17 + 2 = 58) solved, leave 13 speaking neither .

Using the set information: 12 campers forgot towels, 23 forgot hats, totaling 35 combined incidents with some overlap. With 30 campers total, subtract 30 from 23 and 12. Therefore, 30 - (12 + 23 - x), solve for x to determine overlap, yielding 5 who forgot neither .

The intersection of factor sets for numbers intersecting 28 {1, 2, 4, 7, 14, 28} and 36 {1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12, 18, 36} yields P ∩ Q = {1, 2, 4}. Thus, the cardinality is 3 .

For dishes containing both rice and onion, use the inclusion-exclusion principle: 17 onion + 15 rice = 32 total parts minus overlap plus total options = 23. So, 32 - 23 = 9 dishes contain both ingredients .
