Hydrograph Analysis and Calculations

The document provides information about unit hydrographs and calculations related to runoff from watersheds. It includes: - Details of a 4-hour unit hydrograph and calculations to determine peak outflow from a rainfall event. The peak outflow is determined to be 1700 m/s. - Information about a 12-hour unit hydrograph for a watershed and the calculation of its peak value as 453.33 m/s. - Details of a triangular direct runoff hydrograph for a 120 km2 catchment with a rainfall intensity of 5mm/h over 12 hours. The direct runoff depth is calculated to be 28.8 mm. - Specifications of a waters

PROBLEM GATE 2003. The following table presents ordinates of A hydrograph.

The average
infiltration loss rate and constant base Both watershed are 0.5 cm h' and 20 cm's respectively. 0
4 8 12 16 20 24 28 1

Time (h) 4 8 12 16 20 24 28 28
UH 180 560 540 260 120 35 8 0
Ordinates
(cm )

(A) A rainfall event of 5 cm in 4 hours would result in a peak out flow of 1620 m/s (b) 1680 m'/s (c)
1700 m/s (d) 2800
(B) The peak of a 12-h unit hydrograph for the above watershed will be
(a) 426.67 m/s (b) 453.33 m'/s (c) 1360.00 m'/s (d) 1680.00 mls. IGATE,
Solution

Time (h) 4-h-UH (I) Time lag by 4-h (II) Time lag by 8-h (III)

0 0.0 X X
4 180 0 X
8 560 180 0
12 540 560 180
16 260 540 560
20 120 260 540
24 35 120 260
28 8 35 120
32 0 8 35

Adding (I) + (II) + (III) for 16-h rain fall = 1360 cm's

Now for 12-h unit hydrograph 1360 3. = 453.33 m/s Ans

Here, Effective rainfall = 5-0.5 x 4 = 5-2 = 3,0

Now, Peak flow

= 560 x 3 + 20 = 1700 mm

Therefore, answer of (A) is (c) and answer of (B) is (b)

PROBLEM . Observed runoff from a 120 km 2 catchment due to a 12h of uniform intensity of
5mm h−1 resulted in a triangular direct runoff hydrograph of 60h base and maximum ordinate
of 32m 3 s−1

The depth of direct runoff is

(A) 60.0mm (B) 57.6 mm (C) 28.8 mm (D) 2.8 mm
(ii) The ϕ - index for the catchment is (A) 0.0 mmh-1 (B) 2 x 10-1 mmh-1 (C) 0.26 mmh (D) 4.7
mmh- [GATE 2006]
Solution
Given;

A = 120 km2 = 120 x 106 m2

(i) 1/2 x 60 x 3600 x 32 = 120 x d
d = 0.0288 m
= 28.8 mm

Therefore, Ans. is (C)

PROBLEM 5.28. A watershed, with an area of 360 km, has a triangular shaped 4-h unit
hydrograph with a base of 50 hours. The peak discharge of direct runoff hydrograph to 3 cm of
rainfall-excess in 4 hours from the watershed in m 3 s−1

(A) 13.33 (B) 40.00 (C)120 (D)160

Total Average Precipitation = 7.39246 cm
Solution
A = 360 km

3600 x1/2 x 50 x Q P = 360 x 106 x 106 × 10−2

%3D 25 x 360 40 ms-1

For 3 cm excess rain fall

Q, = 3 x 40 = 120 m's
