WHAT EXACTLY IS DEVELOPMENT?
INTRODUCTION:-
Development is a complex issue, with many different and sometimes contentious
definitions. Development is a process, not a level. It is a path to achive certain
goals. Development has been defined differently by various scholars depending in
the context the term is used. It has been defined to refer to transforming of the
people’s ways of living/doing things for the better (Advanced Oxford Learners
Dictionary, 2006). Development involves changing people’s attitudes positively. It
is also defined as a specified state of growth/advancement. In this context,
development means positive transformation/ change of the people’s ways of living,
attitudes, behaviours among others as a result of their accessing relevant,
adequate and timely information services courtesy of the prevailing digital age. A
basic perspective equates development with economic growth. So here in my report
I will mainly talk about economic development.
DISCUSSION:-
Firstly we need to know what are the types of Development. As development is a
broad term it can be used with various fields like physical development, personal
development, educational development, technological development, economic
development and so on.
Physical development encompasses all muscle development, and the idea that the
person generally becomes more physically efficient over time.
Cognitive development deals with the development of a way to think.
Social development is the maturing of a person's ability to socialize.
Sustainable development (SD) is a pattern of resource use that aims to meet
human needs while preserving the environment so that these needs can be met not
only in the present, but also for generations to come.
Technological development is the process
of research and development of technology. Many emerging technologies are
expected to become generally applied in the near future.
Examples of emerging technologies are Genetic engineering / Synthetic
biology, Electric cars with range extenders and Personal rapid transit, Flash
memory with smaller, faster, lower power consuming storage, Nanomaterials, CVD
diamond, Scramjet, Wireless communication with ubiquitous network
connectivity, Anti-aging drugs, Semantic Web or Answers Machine, more
efficient bio fuels, OLEDs, Machine translation, Nuclear fusion power, 3D optical
data storage or Holographic data storage, Metamaterials, 3D displays, Quantum
computing, Nanowire batteries, Virtual retinal
displays, WiTricity and WREL (Wireless energy transfer).
Economic development is the increase in the standard of living in a nation's
population with sustained growth from a simple, low-income economy to a modern,
high-income economy. Also, if the local quality of life could be improved, economic
development would be enhanced. Its scope includes the process and policies by
which a nation improves the economic, political, and social well-being of its people.
The economic development in India followed a socialist-inspired policies for most
of its independent history, including state-ownership of many sectors; extensive
regulation and red tape known as "Licence Raj"; and isolation from the world
economy. India's per capita income increased at only around 1% annualized rate in
the three decades after Independence.
Since the mid-1980s, India has slowly opened up its markets through economic
liberalization. After more fundamental reforms since 1991 and their renewal in the
2000s, India has progressed towards a free market economy.
In the late 2000s, India's growth has reached 7.5%, which will double the average
income in a decade.
Analysts say that if India pushed more fundamental market reforms, it could
sustain the rate and even reach the government's 2011 target of 10%. States have
large responsibilities over their economies. The annualized 1999-2008 growth
rates for Gujarat (9.6%), Haryana (9.1%), or Delhi(8.9%) were significantly higher
than for Bihar (5.1%), Uttar Pradesh (4.4%), or Madhya Pradesh (6.5%). India is
the eleventh-largest economy in the world and the fourth largest by purchasing
power parity adjusted exchange rates (PPP). On per capita basis, it ranks 128th in
the world or 118th by PPP.
Economic development in india depends upon agriculture (India ranks
second worldwide in farm output. ), industrial output (India is fourteenth in the
world in factory output. ), services (India is fifteenth in services output. Service
industry employs 23% of the work force and is growing quickly, with a growth rate
of 7.5% in 1991–2000, up from 4.5% in 1951–80. It has the largest share in the
GDP, accounting for 57% in 2010 up from 20% in 1950.), banking and finance, GDP
growth rate, companies (47 Indian companies were listed in the Forbes Global
2000 ranking for 2009.), oil, natural gas, industries and software parks (India is
booming and is going to be one of the world super power by 2050 as
per BRIC analysis).
CONCLUSION:-
For development to be realized, the invaluable role of access to relevant
knowledge/information, at the right time and in the right format /package should
be given due acknowledgement and appreciation. For people’s ways of living to be
transformed for the better i.e. through improved living standards, education, good
governance, harmonious co-existence through peace building and conflict resolution
among others, they have to be accessed and sensitized with the know how, the
skills, the rules of the game if they are to achieve the same on sustainable basis in
this competitive global temperate. Of significant to note is that such wisdom,
knowledge and information is accessed in libraries, resource centres, registries,
archives among others where they are embedded in form of information resources
( both electronic and other none print materials).
