21st Century
Graphic Novel
Graphic Novels are self-contained stories. They can stand alone because they
are complete. It has a start, middle, and ending in one book. That’s why they are thicker
and have more pages than comics.
However, comics are skinnier because it has only a few pages that you can
finish reading in one sit. They are volumized, which means they are series. Comics and
graphic novels are two different experiences and storytelling.
Basically, Graphic Novels means “picture books”. This means they are mostly
colored. It involves images and words. It is read from left to right.
Graphic novels can be understood as two stories in one; Textual narrative and Graphic
narrative. The picture should complete or enhance the textual narrative. Some of the
graphic artists can play with their work and break the usual way or appearance of a
graphic novel. It’s a matter of being creative, having an original mark of your own.

Manga
Manga is a Japanese version of a graphic novel wherein the author tells stories
using drawings and dialogues in the frames. It is commonly printed in white and black,
which gives off a mysterious and arty feel to them.
The word Manga is derived from the Japanese kanji symbols for Man which
means whimsical/ impromptu and Ga that means pictures.
Compared to Graphic Novels, Mangas usually have full details and the “sound
effects”. Japanese are rich in words that imitate sounds (onomatopoeia), it delivers
spectacular action scenes with great dramatic effect. It has adapted cinematographic
effects as if you were looking in through the character's eyes. It is read from right to left
and top to bottom.

Doodle Fiction
Unlike the first two, Doodle Fiction is not a graphic novel or realistic drawing, it’s
a bit of a both. It is more text-heavy than the two. It involves cartoons and doodles with
writing. Handwritten graphics add more humorous content to a book so it’s usually
targeted at younger children. Its style is to look like a handwritten text with hand-drawn
images.
Drawings are an important part of the story, they add comedy, they add more life to the
story and the book will be duller or it will not be the same if the doodles are excluded.
Doodle fiction is sort of fun and is not a part of the series.
It’s more loose and open, structured left to right and top to bottom with less rigid division
and larger images.
Doodle fiction is a newer or more recent format popularised by “Diary of a Wimpy Kid”
by Jeff Kinney.

It is best to get to know what kind of book you’re into. Especially if you’re picking
a new book in a store and feel like this isn’t the story and narrative style that really feeds
your satisfaction.
The big similarity between graphic novels, manga, and doodle fiction is that they are all
‘illustrated narratives’, they use a combination of pictures/images and text/words to tell
the story.
Quick Reminder: Graphic Novels and Manga look like the same, but Graphic Narrative
is a stand-alone novel that appears thicker than Manga. Manga is like a comic book but
a Japanese version. It has volumes and is read from right to left. While doodle fiction
obviously has cartoon doodles in it and is text-heavier than the first two.
