Machinery Safety
Specific Hazards of working with Heavy Machinery
 Workers on foot are struck by equipment, usually when it's backing up or changing
direction.
 Equipment rolls over and kills the operator while on a slope or when equipment is
loaded or unloaded from lorries.
 Operators or mechanics are run over or caught in equipment when the brakes
aren't set, equipment is left in gear, wheel chocks are not used, or the equipment
and controls aren't locked out.
 Workers on foot or in a trench are crushed by falling equipment loads, backhoe
buckets, or other moving parts.
 Mechanics are killed when working alone on machinery in the event of malfunction

Identify any underground services and ensure they are moved, capped or otherwise made
safe prior to starting work and always follow these safe procedures;

 Review operating, safety, and shutdown procedures in the operator's manual

before you work with a new piece of equipment.
 Make sure the manufacturer's safety features work.
 To prevent slips and falls, keep grease and fluids off the walking/working
surfaces and use 3 points of contact when entering and exiting equipment (such
as 2 hands and 1 foot).
 To prevent rollovers, do not travel or work parallel to steep grades or
embankments or on unstable soil.
 If possible, operate heavy equipment that has a ROPS and fasten the seatbelt.
(Don't use a seatbelt if you must use equipment that has no ROPS, because you
may have to jump clear during a rollover.)
 If equipment is rolling over or out of control, do not jump if it has a ROPS and
seatbelt; you have a better chance of riding it out with a ROPS and your seat belt
fastened.
 Always put the transmission in park, shut off the motor, set the brakes, and
perform any other needed shutdown procedures/lockout of controls and/or
attachments before working on or around the equipment.
 Do not back up unless you are sure no one is behind you. Use mirrors, where
appropriate.
 Do not depend only on backup alarms. They are not always heard on noisy
construction sites.
 Use barriers to separate workers on foot, pedestrians, and vehicles from moving
equipment, where possible.
 When loading or unloading materials, make sure that only essential workers are in
the area and have a spotter/signal person to let you know where they are. No one
should be under a suspended load.
 Never allow other workers to ride on equipment.
 Don't speed; be extra careful around other traffic, hills, obstacles, and curves.

Methods of Working

Excavations of structures
Identify positions, including the Managers pitch and the road extension will be set
out in the approved locations (by the planning permission) and fencing will then be
installed to ensure no unauthorized personnel enter the working area.

A spinning laser will be used to ensure the hard standing are excavated level and the
excavated material will be loaded onto eith er dumpers and transported to a
designated stock pile area or loaded into tractor and trailer and recycled around the
caravan storage area as a bund.

The invert level will be excavated approximately 150mm, rolled using the 80/120
roller before the suitable back fill will be rolled out.

The treated softwood shutters will be cut by handsaw or battery operated circle
saw and 150mm treated posts will be hammered in at corners and equal centres
along the side. Once in place galvanised nail will be used to keep the wooden
edgings in place.

Type 1 stone will be loaded into the dumper using the excavator and brought to
the various areas and tipped on to the new hard standing and levelled in 2No
75mm layers and compacted using pedestrian roller. The final level compaction
will be compacted using the plate compactor.

Timber edging 150mm x 50mm will be laid on to the hardcore and levelled using
either a rubber hammer or wooden mallet. The hardcore type 1 stone levelled up to
the edgings and compacted using a small compactor.

Safety during heavy machinery operations is ensured by reviewing and following manufacturer safety and shutdown procedures, maintaining machinery safety features, and keeping operational surfaces free from grease and fluids. Operators are advised against working parallel to steep grades or unstable soil to prevent rollovers. Use of seatbelts with ROPS (Rollover Protective Structure), not jumping from equipment during a rollover, and securing machinery when not in use are emphasized. Proper equipment operation under supervision and with proper mechanical checks is also crucial .

The primary safety hazards identified include contact with live services underground, trench/excavation collapse, falls into trenches or from equipment, injury from heavy machinery, incorrect manual handling, slips, trips, and falls, and injury from incorrect actions of other contractors. Preventative measures to mitigate these hazards include ensuring personnel are competent and not working alone, erecting barriers around work areas, not lifting beyond capabilities, prohibiting entry of unaccompanied visitors, use of appropriate PPE, proper waste disposal, and adherence to quality control procedures .

Environmental protection measures include the proper disposal of waste to designated areas, which minimizes site contamination. Control of surface water run-off is managed by following Environment Agency and CIRIA guidelines, diverting surface water through oil separators, using sealed roadways, and conducting regular checks for dewatering quality. Wheel washing and roadway sweeping are implemented to prevent mud deposition on public roads .

Contractor and visitor safety at the worksite is managed by ensuring all contractors are aware of site risks and that they do not leave any area in a risky condition. Tools and equipment must be stored securely after each shift. The Project Manager maintains communication with other contractors to ensure awareness of risks during work. All contractors must ensure their work areas are not in dangerous conditions for themselves or others .

PPE is crucial for preventing serious tissue damage when working with Portland cement, which can cause caustic burns upon contact with skin, especially when wet. To protect against these hazards, staff are advised to wear impervious gloves, overalls, safety boots, and eye protection during mixing, working, and laying of Portland cement and its products .

Each subcontractor is responsible for ensuring adequate first aid provisions which include suitable first aid equipment and an appointed first aid person at minimum. The first aider must be designated before project commencement and emergency protocols should be known to all operatives, including immediate alert of any accidents to the contract administrator .

Quality and safety during transportation and storage of materials are ensured by unloading them to designated areas and minimizing trip hazards by maintaining these areas tidy. Materials are collected from storage as needed, with safe handling practices, and barriers are erected to control access. Regular checks and a tidy working environment help maintain safety and order on-site .

Manual handling responsibilities include ensuring that lifting tasks do not exceed staff capabilities and that individuals receive training on manual handling dangers. For heavy or awkward items, either breaking them into smaller units or dual lifting is encouraged. It is the site foreman's responsibility to monitor and control potentially dangerous manual handling situations daily .

Quality control steps include strict adherence to procedures to ensure service quality, consulting the Site Manager for clarification when in doubt, and ensuring operations comply with outlined safety and procedural guidelines. This encompasses schematic adherence during excavations and ensuring that all constructions and adjustments are made as per contract specifications .

The protocol for handling live underground services includes marking excavation areas with paint, conducting CAT scans to locate services, planning and shutting down live services if possible, and employing hand digging around these services when machinery cannot operate within 0.5 meters. Concrete encasement and capping by local authorities are utilized for discovered live services to ensure safety .
