1. Schering bridge is a very versatile and sensitive bridge and suitable for high voltage
measurement. The bridge is used for measuring the capacitance, resistance and the
loss tangent (tan δ) of the insulation material, and its circuit is shown in Figure 1.
From the circuit, derive the expressions for resistance and capacitance of the sample
in terms of the parameters of Schering bridge. Hence, prove that the loss tangent of
the sample is C4R4.

2. It is required to set up Schering bridge to make the measurement at 200Hz on
sample of insulation that have capacitances in the range 200-500pF and loss tangent
of up to 0.02. The fixed components that are available are loss-free standard
capacitor of 300pF and standard resistor of 0.1MΩ. Determine what other
components (R4 and C4) value are required for the bridge circuit.

4. A piece of solid insulating material of thickness 18mm and relative permittivity 2.5
is placed in solid contact with two electrodes of area 500cm2. Within the material
there is a cylindrical gas-filled void of thickness 0.5mm whose circular ends of
radius 5mm are parallel with the electrode. The breakdown voltage Vo of the gas is:
V0 24d 6d 0.5
Where d is the length of the gap in cm. Vo is in kV and applies for uniform field
breakdown. Estimate;
a. The minimum applied voltage needed to cause a partial discharge in the void.
b. The apparent charge
c. The charge across the void
d. Energy associated with the partial discharge

5. A sample of solid insulation has thickness of 15 mm and cross-sectional area 100
cm2. It contains a void of thickness 0.3 mm and cross-sectional area 5 mm2. An
alternating voltage is applied between two parallel conducting plates on other side
of the sample. The void is filled with gas that will breakdown at electric field
strength of 65 kV/cm, and when a partial discharge occurs, the voltage across the
void falls to zero. Assume relative permittivity for solid insulation is 2.5. Determine
a. The inception voltage for partial discharges
b. The electric field strength in solid insulation
c. The discharge magnitude in the void
d. The apparent discharge
6. A sample of solid insulation in the form of a disc with a radius of 150 mm and a
thickness of 15 mm contains an air filled void. The void has a radius of 2 mm and
a height of 2 mm. The relative permittivity of the solid dielectric and the air is 3.5
and 1.0 respectively. The sample is placed between two parallel plate electrodes.
An alternating voltage is applied on the electrodes for partial discharge (PD) test.
Determine the partial discharge inception voltage (PDIV) and apparent charge
magnitude if the breakdown strength of the gas within the void is 40 kV/cm. What
is the result of the test (i.e., pass or fail) if the allowed maximum PD level is 20 pC
at 25 kV of applied voltage? (Given: 𝜀0 = 8.854 × 10−12 Fm-1).
