1.2 DESIGN REQUIREMENTS

PROJECT NAME
Provide water distribution mains as lines of [ductile-iron] [polyvinyl
chloride (PVC) plastic] pipe. Provide water main accessories, gate valves
and check valves as specified and where indicated. Submit design
calculations of water piping.
1.2.2 Water Service Lines to Fire Protection Systems
Provide water service lines as indicated from water distribution main to
building service at a point approximately 5 feet from building, or to the
water utility side of the Backflow Preventer as [ductile-iron] [polyvinyl
chloride (PVC) plastic] pipe.(CHOOSE DUCTILE OR PVC) Provide Fire Protection
Service lines from the downstream side of the Backflow Preventer, or a point
5 feet outside of the building, to the base of the connection to the new
sprinkler system risers, as ductile iron. In the case where the Backflow
Preventer is located inside of the building, provide ductile iron from a
point approximately 5 feet outside of the building. All above ground piping
for fire protection service shall be steel.
1.3 SUBMITTALS
University and LBNL Fire Marshal approval is required for all fire
protection equipment submittals. Submit the following:

NFPA 24 - Contractor’s Material and Test Certificate for
Underground Piping
Certificates shall attest that tests set forth in each applicable
referenced publication have been performed, whether specified in
that publication to be mandatory or otherwise and that production
control tests have been performed at the intervals or frequency
specified in the publication.
1.4 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
1.4.1 Delivery and Storage
Inspect materials delivered to site for damage. Unload and store with
minimum handling. Store materials on site in enclosures or under protective
covering. Store plastic piping, jointing materials and (DELETE IF NO
PLASTIC) rubber gaskets under cover out of direct sunlight. Do not store
materials directly on the ground. Keep inside of pipes, fittings, valves,
and hydrants free of dirt and debris.
1.4.2 Handling
(TAILOR [Link] THROUGH [Link] AS NECESSARY FOR PROJECT AND PRODUCTS USED)
Handle pipe, fittings, valves, hydrants, and other accessories in a manner
to ensure delivery to the trench in sound undamaged condition. Take special
care to avoid injury to coatings and linings on pipe and fittings; make
repairs if coatings or linings are damaged. Do not place any other material
or pipe inside a pipe or fitting after the coating has been applied. Carry,
do not drag pipe to the trench. Use of pinch bars and tongs for aligning or
turning pipe will be permitted only on the bare ends of the pipe. The
interior of pipe and accessories shall be thoroughly cleaned of foreign
matter before being lowered into the trench and shall be kept clean during
laying operations by plugging or other approved method. Before
installation, the pipe shall be inspected for defects. Material found to be
defective before or after laying shall be replaced with sound material
without additional expense to the Government. Store rubber gaskets that
are not to be installed immediately, under cover out of direct sunlight.
[Link] Coated and Wrapped Steel Pipe
Handle steel pipe with coal-tar enamel or coal-tar epoxy coating in
accordance with the provisions of AWWA C203.
[Link] Polyethylene (PE) Pipe, Fittings, and Accessories
Handle PE pipe, fittings, and accessories in accordance with AWWA C901.
[Link] Miscellaneous Plastic Pipe and Fittings
Handle Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) pipe and fittings in accordance with the
manufacturer's recommendations. Store plastic piping and jointing materials
that are not to be installed immediately under cover out of direct sunlight.

PART 2 PRODUCTS
All above-ground piping components, and all valves shall be listed in the UL
Fire Protection Directory and/or FM Approved.
2.1 WATER DISTRIBUTION MAIN MATERIALS
2.1.1 Piping Materials
(CHOOSE AND TAILOR [Link] OR [Link] FOR DUCTILE IRON OR PVC)
[Link] Ductile-Iron Piping
a. Pipe: Ductile iron pressure pipe, centrifugally cast, bell and spigot,
with "Tyton" locking joints with “Field-Lok” gaskets, 350-psi (2415-kPa)
gauge working pressure, thickness class 50 in accordance with AWWA-C151.
Double cement-mortar lining with an asphaltic seal coat in accordance
with AWWA-C104, and an exterior bituminous coating in accordance with
AWWA-C203; U.S. Pipe and Foundry Co., Pacific States Cast Iron Pipe Co.,
or equal.
b. Fittings: Fittings shall have pressure rating at least equivalent to
that of the pipe. Ends of pipe and fittings shall be suitable for the
specified joints.
(1) Fittings shall have a minimum of 250-lb (1 725-kPa) working
pressure, ductile iron; AWWA C110 and C111; with "Tyton" locking
joints with “Field-Lok” gaskets. The fittings must be provided
with Double cement-mortar lining in accordance with AWWA C104 or
alternatively, provided with fusion-bonded epoxy coatings for the
interior and exterior surfaces in accordance with AWWA C116. U.S.
Pipe and Foundry Co., Pacific States Cast Iron Pipe Co., or equal.
(2) Flanged Outlet Tees: Sizes 4-inch through 16-inch, 250-lb (1725-
kPa) working pressure, ductile iron; AWWA C110 and C111; mechanical
joints and SBR rubber-ring gaskets. Flanged outlet shall conform
to and comply with ASMEB16.1, 250lb (1725kPa). The flanged outlet
tees shall be provided with double cement-mortar lining in
accordance with AWWA C104 or alternatively, provided with fusion-
bonded epoxy coatings for the interior and exterior surfaces in
accordance with AWWA C116.
(3) Flanged Fittings: Sizes 4-inch through 16-inch 250-lb (1725-kPa)
working pressure, ductile iron; ASTMA126, class B and AWWA C110,
mechanical joints and SBR rubber-ring gaskets.. Flanges shall
conform to and comply with ASME B16.1, 250lb (1725kPa). The
flanged fittings shall be provided with double cement-mortar lining
in accordance with AWWA C104 or alternatively, provided with
fusion-bonded epoxy coatings for the interior and exterior surfaces
in accordance with AWWA C116.
e. Joints and Jointing Material:
(1) Push-On Joints: Shape of pipe ends and fitting ends, gaskets, and
lubricant for joint assembly, AWWA C111/A21.11.

(2) Mechanical Joints: Dimensional and material requirements for pipe
ends, glands, bolts and nuts, and gaskets, AWWA C111/A21.11.
(3) Flanged Joints: Bolts, nuts, and gaskets for flanged connections
as recommended in the Appendix to AWWA C115/A21.15. Flange for
setscrewed flanges shall be of ductile iron, ASTM A536, Grade 65-
45-12, and conform to the applicable requirements of ASME B16.1,
Class 250. Setscrews for setscrewed flanges shall be 190,000 psi
tensile strength, heat treated and zinc-coated steel. Gasket and
lubricants for setscrewed flanges, in accordance with applicable
requirements for mechanical-joint gaskets specified in AWWA
C111/A21.11. Design of setscrewed gasket shall provide for
confinement and compression of gasket when joint to adjoining
flange is made.
(4) Insulating Joints: Designed to effectively prevent metal-to-metal
contact at the joint between adjacent sections of piping. Joint
shall be of the flanged type with insulating gasket, insulating
bolt sleeves, and insulating washers. Gasket shall be of the
dielectric type, full face, and in other respects as recommended in
the Appendix to AWWA C115/A21.15. Bolts and nuts, as recommended
in the Appendix to AWWA C115/A21.15.
(5) Sleeve-Type Mechanical Coupled Joints: As specified in paragraph
entitled "Sleeve-Type Mechanical Couplings."
(6) Grooved and Shouldered Type Joints: Grooved and shouldered pipe
ends and couplings, AWWA C606. Joint dimension shall be as
specified in AWWA C606 for rigid joints, except that where joints
are indicated to be flexible.
c. Cathodic Protection: Provide cathodic protection for all ductile iron
piping.
[Link] Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Plastic Piping
a. Pipe and Fittings: Pipe, AWWA C900, shall be plain end or gasket bell
end, Pressure Class 200, DR14, with cast-iron-pipe-equivalent OD. Pipe
and fittings shall bear the seal of approval of the National Sanitation
Foundation (NSF).
c. Fittings for PVC pipe: Fittings shall be gray iron or ductile iron,
AWWA C110/A21.10 or AWWA C153/A21.53, and have cement-mortar lining,
AWWA C104/A21.4, standard thickness. Fittings with push-on joint ends
shall conform to the same requirements as fittings with mechanical-joint
ends, except that bell design shall be modified, as approved, for push-
on joint suitable for use with PVC plastic pipe specified in this
paragraph. Iron fittings and specials shall be cement-mortar lined in
accordance with AWWA C104/A21.4. Schedule 80 PVC fittings shall conform
to ASTM D2467.
d. Joints and Jointing Material: Joints for pipe shall be push-on joints,
ASTM D3139. Joints between pipe and metal fittings, valves, and other
accessories shall be push-on joints ASTM D3139, or compression-type
joints/mechanical joints, ASTM D3139 and AWWA C111/A21.11. Provide each
joint connection with an elastomeric gasket suitable for the bell or

coupling with which it is to be used. Gaskets for push-on joints for
pipe, ASTM F477. Gaskets for push-on joints and compression-type
joints/mechanical joints for joint connections between pipe and metal
fittings, valves, and other accessories, AWWA C111/A21.11, respectively,
for push-on joints and mechanical joints. Mechanically coupled joints
using a sleeve-type mechanical coupling, as specified in paragraph
entitled "Sleeve-Type Mechanical Couplings," may be used as an optional
jointing method in lieu of push-on joints on plain-end PVC plastic pipe,
subject to the limitations specified for mechanically coupled joints
using a sleeve-type mechanical coupling and to the use of internal
stiffeners as specified for compression-type joints in ASTM D3139.
[Link] Steel Piping
Where used to supply above-ground backflow preventers, outside of buildings,
provide steel pipe in accordance with the following. Steel pipe shall not be
used in underground piping systems.
a. Pipe and Fittings: Pipe, AWWA C200. Fittings, AWWA C208 and to AWWA
C200, with reference to the requirements specified therein for "Special
Sections." Pipe and fittings for aboveground lines shall have cement-
mortar lining. Ends of pipe and fittings shall be suitable for the
joints and jointing materials used.
1. Pipe shall be welded or seamless with plain ends in accordance with
AWWA C606 for use with mechanical couplings.
2. Fittings and specials shall be made of the same material as the
pipe. Specials and fittings may be made of standard steel tube
turns or segmentally welded sections, with ends to accommodate the
type of couplings or joints specified for the pipe. The thickness
rating of pipe fittings and specials shall be not less than the
thickness specified and the pressure rating calculated for the pipe
with which they are used. Protective materials for fittings and
specials shall be as specified for the pipe. Specials and fittings
that cannot be mechanically lined, coated, and wrapped shall be
lined, coated, and wrapped by hand, using the same material used
for the pipe with the same number of applications of each material,
smoothly applied.
b. Wall Thickness for Pipe and Fittings: All above-ground steel pipe for
fire protection water service shall be Schedule 40 without exception.
c. Joints and Jointing Materials
(1) Joints: Joints for pipe and fittings on above-ground steel pipe
supplying fire protection water service shall be flanged joints,
except where welded.
(2) Welded Joints: Electrodes shall be of the quality specified in
AWWA C206.
(3) Flanged Joints: Provide pipe ends with steel flanges, AWWA C207.
Bolts and nuts for flanged connections, AWWA C207. Rubber gaskets,
AWWA C207; asbestos gaskets will not be allowed.

(4) Insulating Joints: Where required to prevent metal-to-metal
contact at the joint between adjacent sections of piping. Joint
shall be of the flanged type with insulating gasket, insulating
bolt sleeves, and insulating washers. Gasket shall be of the
dielectric type, full face, and in other respects as recommended in
the Appendix to AWWA C115/A21.15. Bolts and nuts shall be as
recommended in the Appendix to AWWA C115/A21.15.
2.1.2 Valves, Hydrants, and Other Water Main Accessories
[Link] Gate Valves on Buried Piping
AWWA C500, AWWA C509, AWWA C515,or UL 262. Unless otherwise specified,
valves conforming to: (1) AWWA C500 shall be nonrising stem type with
double-disc gates and mechanical-joint ends or push-on joint ends as
appropriate for the adjoining pipe, (2) AWWA C509 or AWWA C515 shall be
nonrising stem type with mechanical-joint ends and (3) UL 262 shall be
inside-screw type with operating nut, double-disc or split-wedge type gate,
designed for a hydraulic working pressure of a minimum of 175 psi, and shall
have mechanical-joint ends or push-on joint ends as appropriate for the pipe
to which it is joined. Materials for UL 262 valves shall conform to the
reference standards specified in AWWA C500. Valves shall open by
counterclockwise rotation of the valve stem.
Where a post indicator is utilized, the valve shall have an indicator post
flange; indicator post flange for AWWA C500 valve shall conform to the
applicable requirements of UL 262. Valves shall be of one manufacturer.
[Link] Gate Valves in Valve Pit(s) and Aboveground Location
AWWA C500, AWWA C509, AWWA C515, or UL 262. Unless otherwise specified,
valves conforming to: (1) AWWA C500 shall be outside-screw-and-yoke rising-
stem gates and flanged ends, (2) AWWA C509 or AWWA C515 shall be outside-
screw-and-yoke rising-stem type with flanged ends, and (3) UL 262 shall be
outside-screw-and-yoke type gate and flanged ends, and shall be designed for
a hydraulic working pressure of 175 psi. Provide valves with handwheels
that open by counterclockwise rotation of the valve stem. Valves shall be of
one manufacturer.
[Link] Check Valves
Swing-check type, AWWA C508 or UL 312. Valves conforming to: (1) AWWA C508
shall have iron or steel body and cover and flanged ends, and (2) UL 312
shall have cast iron or steel body and cover, flanged ends, and designed for
a working pressure of 175 psi. Materials for UL 312 valves shall conform to
the reference standards specified in AWWA C508. Valves shall have clear
port opening. Valves shall be of one manufacturer.
[Link] Pressure Reducing Valves
(TAILOR FOR PROJECT IF PRV’S ARE NECESSARY)
Pressure reducing valves shall maintain a constant downstream pressure
regardless of fluctuations in demand. Valves shall be suitable for [_____]
psi operating pressure on the inlet side, with outlet pressure set for
[_____]psi. The valves shall be of the hydraulically-operated, pilot
controlled, globe or angle type, and may be actuated either by diaphragm or
piston. The pilot control shall be the diaphragm-operated, adjustable,

spring-loaded type, designed to permit flow when controlling pressure
exceeds the spring setting. Ends shall be [threaded] [flanged]. Valve
bodies shall be bronze, cast iron or cast steel with bronze trim. Valve
stem shall be stainless steel. Valve discs and diaphragms shall be
synthetic rubber. Valve seats shall be bronze. Pilot controls shall be
bronze with stainless steel working parts.
[Link] Fire Hydrants
(REMOVE IF NOT PROVIDING HYDRANTS)
Provide only wet-barrel type hydrants, AWWA C503 or UL 246 compliant.
Hydrant shall have factory-applied prime coat of paint.
Hydrants shall be California-Type hydrants, Clow 960, and have 6 inch inlet,
one 4-1/2 inch pumper connection and two, 2-1/2 inch hose connections.
Pumper connection and hose connections shall be individually valved with
independent nozzle gate valves. This item is proprietary to match existing
Site-wide University standard and no substitution will be allowed. Each
outlet shall be independently valved with 1-1/8 inch pentagon operating nut
on the valve cap. Hydrant shall be complete with 6 inch (152 mm) bury
length (bury to suit depth of water main connection as indicated on the
Drawings).
[Link] Indicator Posts
UL 789. Provide for gate valves where indicated.
[Link] Valve Boxes
Provide a valve box for each gate valve on buried piping, except where
indicator post is shown. Valve boxes shall be of cast iron or precast
concrete of a size suitable for the valve on which it is to be used and
shall be adjustable. Cast-iron boxes shall have a minimum cover and wall
thickness of 3/16 inch. Precast concrete boxes installed in locations
subjected to vehicular traffic shall be designed to withstand the following
AASHTO load designations as outline in AASHTO HB-17. Cast-iron box shall
have a heavy coat of bituminous paint.
[Link] Back Flow Prevention Assembly
Double-check Detector Assembly (DCDA) backflow prevention assembly shall
comply with ASSE 1015, and shall be Febco Model 806 to match proprietary
existing site-wide standard. Substitutions shall not be made unless
specifically authorized by the University.
The assembly shall have a bronze, cast-iron or stainless steel body with
flanged ends. The assembly shall include pressure gauge test ports and OS&Y
shutoff valves on the inlet and outlet, 2-positive-seating check valve for
continuous pressure application, and four test cocks. Assemblies shall be
rated for working pressure of 175 psi The maximum pressure loss shall be 6
psi at a flow rate equal to the sprinkler water demand, at the location of
the assembly. A test port for a pressure gauge shall be provided both
upstream and downstream of the double check backflow prevention assembly
valves.

[Link] Tracer Wire for Nonmetallic Piping
Provide bare copper or aluminum wire not less than 0.10 inch in diameter in
sufficient length to be continuous over each separate run of nonmetallic
pipe.
2.2 WATER SERVICE LINE MATERIALS
2.2.1 Piping Materials
[Link] Plastic Piping
Plastic pipe and fittings shall bear the seal of the National Sanitation
Foundation (NSF) for potable water service. Plastic pipe and fittings shall
be supplied from the same manufacturer.
[Link] Steel Piping and Associated Fittings
Pipe, ASTM A53/A53M, Standard Weight, zinc-coated. Fittings, ASME B16.4,
Class 125, zinc coated; or ASME B16.3, Class 150, zinc coated, threaded.
[Link] Protective Materials for Steel Pipe Less than 3 Inches
Protective materials for steel pipe, except as otherwise specified, shall be
mechanically applied in a factory or plant especially equipped for the
purpose. The materials shall, unless otherwise indicated on the drawings,
consist of the following for the indicated pipe material and size:
Pipe and fittings less than 3 inches in diameter shall be thoroughly cleaned
of foreign material by wire brushing and solvent cleaning, and then given 1
coat of coal-tar primer and 2 coats of coal-tar enamel conforming to AWWA
C203; threaded ends of pipe and fittings shall be adequately protected prior
to coating.
[Link] Ductile-Iron Piping
Comply with "Ductile-Iron Piping" subparagraph under paragraph "Water
Distribution Main Materials."
[Link] Insulating Joints
Joints between pipe of dissimilar metals shall have a rubber-gasketed or
other suitable approved type of insulating joint or dielectric coupling
which will effectively prevent metal-to-metal contact between adjacent
sections of piping.
[Link] Disinfection
Chlorinating materials shall conform to the following:
Chlorine, Liquid: AWWA B301.
Hypochlorite, Calcium and Sodium: AWWA B300.

PART 3 EXECUTION
3.1 INSTALLATION OF PIPELINES
(DELETE/TAILOR THIS ENTIRE SECTION TO CORRESPOND TO THE PROJECT, THE TYPE OF
PIPING AND APPURTENANCES USED, AND ANY OTHER ASSOCIATED REQUIREMENTS)
3.1.1 General Requirements for Installation of Pipelines
These requirements shall apply to all pipeline installation except where
specific exception is made in the "Special Requirements..." paragraphs.
Additional requirements are in Division 33 Specification Section “Common
Work Results for Utilities.”
[Link] Location of Water Lines
Terminate the work covered by this section at a point approximately 5 feet
from the building, unless otherwise indicated. Do not lay water lines in
the same trench with gas lines, fuel lines, or electric wiring.
a. Water Piping Installation Parallel With Sewer Piping
Normal Conditions: Lay water piping at least 10 feet horizontally from
a sewer or sewer manhole whenever possible. Measure the distance
edge-to-edge.
(1) The bottom (invert) of the water piping shall be at least 18
inches above the top (crown) of the sewer piping.
(2) Where this vertical separation cannot be obtained, the sewer
piping shall be constructed of AWWA-approved water pipe and
pressure tested in place without leakage prior to backfilling.
Approved waste water disposal method shall be utilized.
(3) The sewer manhole shall be of watertight construction and tested
in place.
b. Installation of Water Piping Crossing Sewer Piping
(1) Normal Conditions: Water piping crossing above sewer piping shall
be laid to provide a separation of at least 18 inches between the
bottom of the water piping and the top of the sewer piping.
(2) Unusual Conditions: When local conditions prevent a vertical
separation described above, use the following construction:
(a) Sewer piping passing over or under water piping shall be
constructed of AWWA-approved ductile iron water piping, pressure
tested in place without leakage prior to backfilling.
(b) Water piping passing under sewer piping shall, in addition, be
protected by providing a vertical separation of at least 18 inches
between the bottom of the sewer piping and the top of the water
piping; adequate structural support for the sewer piping to prevent
excessive deflection of the joints and the settling on and breaking
of the water piping; and that the length, minimum 20 feet, of the
water piping be centered at the point of the crossing so that

joints shall be equidistant and as far as possible from the sewer
piping.
c. Sewer Piping or Sewer Manholes: No water piping shall pass through or
come in contact with any part of a sewer manhole.
[Link] Earthwork
Perform all earthwork operations in accordance with University policies and
Specifications Division 31.
a. Shore trenches where trench depth exceeds 5 feet (1.5 m), or where
otherwise required to prevent cave-in, in accordance with Division 01
Section "Special Procedures". In addition, install shoring to prevent
adjacent structures from settling and to prevent existing piping with
ring or caulked joints from moving or blowing out.
b. The minimum cover to top of pipe shall be 3 feet (0.9 m), unless
otherwise indicated on the Drawings. Cover of less than 3 feet (0.9 m)
in other conditions shall be approved by University Project Manager on a
case-by-case basis. The decision may include the use of Controlled
Density Fill (CDF) in Division 31 Section "Backfilling".
[Link] Pipe Laying and Jointing
Remove fins and burrs from pipe and fittings. Before placing in position,
clean pipe, fittings, valves, and accessories, and maintain in a clean
condition. Provide proper facilities for lowering sections of pipe into
trenches. Do not under any circumstances drop or dump pipe, fittings,
valves, or any other water line material into trenches. Cut pipe in a neat
workmanlike manner accurately to length established at the site and work
into place without springing or forcing. Replace by one of the proper
length any pipe or fitting that does not allow sufficient space for proper
installation of jointing material. Blocking or wedging between bells and
spigots will not be permitted. Lay bell-and-spigot pipe with the bell end
pointing in the direction of laying. Grade the pipeline in straight lines;
avoid the formation of dips and low points. Support pipe at proper
elevation and grade. Secure firm, uniform support. Wood support blocking
will not be permitted. Lay pipe so that the full length of each section of
pipe and each fitting will rest solidly on the pipe bedding; excavate
recesses to accommodate bells, joints, and couplings. Provide anchors and
supports where necessary for fastening work into place. Make proper
provision for expansion and contraction of pipelines. Keep trenches free of
water until joints have been properly made. At the end of each work day,
close open ends of pipe temporarily with wood blocks or bulkheads. Do not
lay pipe when conditions of trench or weather prevent installation. Depth
of cover over top of pipe shall not be less than 3 feet.
[Link] Installation of Tracer Wire
Install a continuous length of tracer wire for the full length of each run
of nonmetallic pipe, in accordance with Manufacturer’s Recommendations, and
Specification Section 01-35-00. Attach wire to top of pipe in such manner
that it will not be displaced during construction operations.

[Link] Connections to Existing Water Lines
Make connections to existing water lines after approval is obtained and with
a minimum interruption of service on the existing line.
a. Under no circumstances shall existing lines or utilities be broken into
without prior approval of the University. Submit the request for this
approval to the University in accordance with Division 01 Section
"General Requirements” and state the maximum duration of shutdown.
b. Schedule outages for utility tie-in work well in advance, secure
University approval for the schedule, and give written notice to the
University at least 14 days in advance of the desired shutdown.
c. All tie-ins shall be planned and executed to be completed with affected
portions of the utility back in service at the end of the normal day
shift. Deviations from this requirement will be allowed only with
prior written approval of the University.
d. In preparation for tie-ins to the utility systems, the University will
drain and/or blow the existing piping prior to start of tie-in work by
the Subcontractor. In all cases, the University will close the
appropriate valves to isolate the area of work.
e. Immediately after completion of the tie-in work to the existing piping
systems including testing, fill the lines, check connections for leaks,
and put the systems in operation in accordance with Division 33 Section
"Operation and Maintenance of Utilities".
f. Tapping into pipe of equal sizes is not allowed.
g. Hot tapping into (E) water line of any sizes is not allowed. All water
line tie-ins shall be provided with a proper fitting. All concrete
liner cracked or delaminated from the internal pipe wall shall be
repaired. Notify University Project Manager for inspection of the
concrete liner after the pipe cut and after the repair.
i. The subcontractor shall provide tie-in shop drawings for all underground
utilities. The tie-in shop drawings shall provide locations of all pipe
fittings, alignment of pipe spool and tie-in flanges or transition
fitting, etc. The tie-in shop drawings shall be submitted to the
University for review and approval.
[Link] Penetrations
Pipe passing through walls of valve pits and structures shall be provided
with ductile-iron or Schedule 40 steel wall sleeves. Annular space between
walls and sleeves shall be filled with rich cement mortar. Annular space
between pipe and sleeves shall be filled with mastic.
[Link] Flanged Pipe
Flanged pipe shall only be installed above ground or with the flanges in
valve pits.
[Link] Cathodic Protection

Provide cathodic protection for all metallic piping, in accordance with
manufacturer’s specifications.
3.1.2 Special Requirements for Installation of Water Mains
[Link] Installation of Ductile-Iron Piping
Unless otherwise specified, install pipe and fittings in accordance with
paragraph entitled "General Requirements for Installation of Pipelines" and
with the requirements of AWWA C600 for pipe installation, joint assembly,
valve-and-fitting installation, and thrust restraint.
a. Jointing: Make mechanical joints with the gaskets, glands, bolts, and
nuts specified for this type joint; assemble in accordance with the
applicable requirements of AWWA C600 for joint assembly and the
recommendations of Appendix A to AWWA C111/A21.11. Make flanged joints
with the gaskets, bolts, and nuts specified for this type joint. Make
flanged joints up tight; avoid undue strain on flanges, fittings,
valves, and other equipment and accessories. Align bolt holes for each
flanged joint. Use full size bolts for the bolt holes; use of
undersized bolts to make up for misalignment of bolt holes or for any
other purpose will not be permitted. Do not allow adjoining flange
faces to be out of parallel to such degree that the flanged joint cannot
be made watertight without overstraining the flange. When flanged pipe
or fitting has dimensions that do not allow the making of a proper
flanged joint as specified, replace it by one of proper dimensions. Use
setscrewed flanges to make flanged joints where conditions prevent the
use of full-length flanged pipe and assemble in accordance with the
recommendations of the setscrewed flange manufacturer Make insulating
joints with the gaskets, sleeves, washers, bolts, and nuts previously
specified for this type joint. Assemble insulating joints as specified
for flanged joints, except that bolts with insulating sleeves shall be
full size for the bolt holes. Ensure that there is no metal-to-metal
contact between dissimilar metals after the joint has been assembled.
b. Allowable Deflection: The maximum allowable deflection shall be as
given in AWWA C600. If the alignment requires deflection in excess of
the above limitations, special bends or a sufficient number of shorter
lengths of pipe shall be furnished to provide angular deflections within
the limit set forth.
c. Pipe Anchorage: Provide concrete thrust blocks for pipe anchorage,
except where metal harness is indicated. Thrust blocks shall be in
accordance with the requirements of AWWA C600 for thrust restraint. Use
concrete, ASTM C94/C94M, having a minimum compressive strength of 2,500
psi at 28 days; or use concrete of a mix not leaner than one part
cement, 2 1/2 parts sand, and 5 parts gravel, having the same minimum
compressive strength.
d. Exterior Protection: Completely encase buried ductile iron pipe,
fittings, and connections with polyethylene tube or sheet, using
polyethylene film, in accordance with AWWA C105/A21.5, and in accordance
with LBNL Specification 33-01-30.51 “Corrosion Protection of Utilities.”
All metallic piping fitting components (nuts, bolts, washers, etc.)

shall have a mastic coating applied in accordance with NFPA 24 and LBNL
Specification 33-01-30.51.
[Link] Installation of PVC Plastic Water Main Pipe
Installation of PVC Plastic Water Main Pipe and Associated Fittings: Unless
otherwise specified, install pipe and fittings in accordance with paragraph
entitled "General Requirements for Installation of Pipelines"; with the
requirements of AWWA C605 for laying of pipe, joining PVC pipe to fittings
and accessories, and setting of hydrants, valves, and fittings; and with the
recommendations for pipe joint assembly and appurtenance installation in
AWWA M23, Chapter 7, "Installation."
a. Jointing: Make push-on joints with the elastomeric gaskets specified
for this type joint, using either elastomeric-gasket bell-end pipe or
elastomeric-gasket couplings. For pipe-to-pipe push-on joint
connections, use only pipe with push-on joint ends having factory-made
bevel; for push-on joint connections to metal fittings, valves, and
other accessories, cut spigot end of pipe off square and re-bevel pipe
end to a bevel approximately the same as that on ductile-iron pipe used
for the same type of joint. Use an approved lubricant recommended by
the pipe manufacturer for push-on joints. Assemble push-on joints for
pipe-to-pipe joint connections in accordance with the requirements of
AWWA C605 for laying the pipe and the recommendations in AWWA M23,
Chapter 7, "Installation," for pipe joint assembly. Assemble push-on
joints for connection to fittings, valves, and other accessories in
accordance with the requirements of AWWA C605 for joining PVC pipe to
fittings and accessories and with the applicable requirements of AWWA
C600 for joint assembly. Make compression-type joints/mechanical joints
with the gaskets, glands, bolts, nuts, and internal stiffeners
previously specified for this type joint; assemble in accordance with
the requirements of AWWA C605 for joining PVC pipe to fittings and
accessories, with the applicable requirements of AWWA C600 for joint
assembly, and with the recommendations of Appendix A to AWWA
C111/A21.11. Cut off spigot end of pipe for compression-type
joint/mechanical-joint connections and do not re-bevel. Assemble joints
made with sleeve-type mechanical couplings in accordance with the
recommendations of the coupling manufacturer using internal stiffeners
as previously specified for compression-type joints.
b. Offset: Maximum offset in alignment between adjacent pipe joints shall
be as recommended by the manufacturer and approved by the Contracting
Officer, but shall not exceed 5 degrees.
c. Pipe Anchorage: Provide concrete thrust blocks for pipe anchorage.
Thrust blocks shall be in accordance with the requirements of AWWA C605
for reaction or thrust blocking and plugging of dead ends. Use
concrete, ASTM C94/C94M, having a minimum compressive strength of 2,500
psi at 28 days; or use concrete of a mix not leaner than one part
cement, 2 1/2 parts sand, and 5 parts gravel, having the same minimum
compressive strength.
d. Fittings: Install in accordance with AWWA C605.

[Link] Installation of Steel Piping
Unless otherwise specified, install pipe and fittings in accordance with
AWWA M11, Chapter 12, "Transportation, Installation, and Testing." Paint all
aboveground piping read, and seal all with protective coating.
a. Jointing: Make welded joints in accordance with AWWA C206 and with the
recommendations given for installation of pipe in AWWA M11, Chapter 12,
"Transportation, Installation, and Testing." Make flanged joints with
the gaskets, bolts, and nuts specified for this type joint. Make
flanged joints up tight; avoid undue strain on flanges, fittings,
valves, and other equipment and accessories. Align bolt holes for each
flanged joint. Use full-size bolts for the bolt holes; use of
undersized bolts to make up for misalignment of bolt holes or for any
other purpose will not be permitted. Do not allow adjoining flange
faces to be out of parallel to such degree that the flanged joint cannot
be made watertight without straining the flange. When flanged pipe or
fitting has dimensions that do not allow the making of a proper flanged
joint as specified, replace it by one of proper dimensions.
b. Pipe Anchorage: Provide concrete thrust blocks (reaction backing) or
metal harness for pipe anchorage. Thrust blocks shall be in accordance
with the recommendations for thrust restraint in AWWA M11, Chapter 13,
"Supplementary Design Data and Details," except that size and
positioning of thrust blocks shall be as indicated. Use concrete, ASTM
C94/C94M, having a minimum compressive strength of 2500 psi at 28 days;
or use concrete of a mix not leaner than one part cement, 2 1/2 parts
sand, and 5 parts gravel, having the same minimum compressive strength.
Metal harness shall be in accordance with the recommendations for joint
harnesses in AWWA M11, Chapter 13, "Supplementary Design Data and
Details.” Metal harness shall be fabricated by the pipe manufacturer and
furnished with the pipe.
c. Pipe Anchorage for piping supplying fire sprinkler systems: Joints
shall be anchored in accordance with NFPA 24 using pipe clamps and steel
rods from the last underground elbow to the flange above the floor and
from the elbow to a pipe clamp in the horizontal run of pipe. Buried
steel components shall be provided with a corrosion protective coating
in accordance with AWWA C203. Buried nuts, bolts etc. shall be provided
with a corrosion resistant mastic in accordance with NFPA 24. All buried
steel fittings, including “T” fittings, elbows, 90 degree fittings, 4-
way intersections, etc. shall be provided with a plastic wrap to prevent
corrosion.
A concrete thrust block shall be provided at the elbow where the pipe
turns up toward the floor. Bearing face calculations for thrust blocks
shall be prepared and submitted for approval. In addition, if a joint
restraint system is used joints shall be anchored in accordance with
NFPA 24 using pipe clamps and steel rods from the elbow to the flange
above the floor and from the elbow to a pipe clamp in the horizontal run
of pipe.
[Link] Installation of Valves and Hydrants
a. Installation of Valves: Install gate valves, AWWA C500 and UL 262, in
accordance with the requirements of AWWA C600 for valve-and-fitting

installation and with the recommendations of the Appendix
("Installation, Operation, and Maintenance of Gate Valves") to AWWA
C500. Install gate valves, AWWA C509 or AWWA C515, in accordance with
the requirements of AWWA C600 for valve-and-fitting installation and
with the recommendations of the Appendix ("Installation, Operation, and
Maintenance of Gate Valves") to AWWA C509 or AWWA C515. Install gate
valves on PVC water mains in accordance with the recommendations for
appurtenance installation in AWWA M23, Chapter 7, "Installation."
b. Installation of Hydrants: Install hydrants in accordance with AWWA
C600 for hydrant installation and as indicated. Make and assemble
joints as specified for making and assembling the same type joints
between pipe and fittings. Install hydrants with the 4 1/2 inch
connections facing the adjacent paved surface.
3.1.3 Installation of Water Service Piping
[Link] Location
Connect water service piping to the building service where the building
service has been installed. Where building service has not been installed,
terminate water service lines approximately 5 feet from the building line at
a point directed by the Contracting Officer. such water service lines shall
be closed with plugs or caps.
3.1.4 Special Requirements for Installation of Water Service Piping
[Link] Installation of Metallic Piping
Install pipe and fittings in accordance with paragraph entitled "General
Requirements for Installation of Pipelines" and with the applicable
requirements of AWWA C600 for pipe installation, unless otherwise specified.
[Link] Installation of Plastic Piping
Install pipe and fittings in accordance with paragraph entitled "General
Requirements for Installation of Pipelines" and with the applicable
requirements of ASTM D2774, unless otherwise specified. Handle solvent
cements used to join plastic piping in accordance with ASTM F402.
[Link] Service Lines for Sprinkler Supplies
Water service lines used to supply building sprinkler systems for fire
protection shall be connected to the water distribution main in accordance
with NFPA 24. The fire protection water main shall be laid, and joints
anchored, in accordance with NFPA 24. The supply line shall terminate
inside the building with a flanged piece, the bottom of which shall be set
not less than 12 inches above the finished floor.
3.2 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL
3.2.1 Field Tests and Inspections
Prior to hydrostatic testing, obtain University approval of the proposed
method for disposal of waste water from hydrostatic testing. The LBNL Fire
Marshal or designated representative will conduct field inspections and

witness field tests specified in this section. The Contractor shall perform
field tests, and provide labor, equipment, and incidentals required for
testing. Water for testing shall be provided by the University. The
Contractor shall produce evidence, when required, that any item of work has
been constructed in accordance with the drawings, specifications, and
applicable standard. Do not begin testing on any section of a pipeline
where concrete thrust blocks have been provided until at least 5 days after
placing of the concrete.
3.2.2 Backfilling
Backfilling shall be provided in accordance with NFPA 13, NFPA 24 and
University Master Specification Division 31, Section 31-23-23. All joints
and piping shall be left exposed for inspection by the University, and
either the LBNL Fire Marshal or Fire Marshal’s designated technical
representative prior to covering. Covering underground piping before
inspection and approval will require the piping to be uncovered and
inspected at no expense to the University. Unless otherwise required, all
joints shall be backfilled prior to hydrostatic testing.
3.2.3 Testing Procedure
[Link] Hydrostatic Testing
Test ductile-iron water mains and water service lines in accordance with the
requirements of AWWA C600 and NFPA 24 for hydrostatic testing. The amount
of leakage on ductile-iron pipelines with mechanical-joints shall not exceed
the amounts given in AWWA C600; no leakage will be allowed at joints made by
any other method. Test PVC plastic water mains and water service lines made
with PVC plastic water main pipe in accordance with the requirements of AWWA
C605 and NFPA 24 for pressure and leakage tests. The amount of leakage on
pipelines made of PVC plastic water main pipe shall not exceed the amounts
given in AWWA C605 and NFPA 24, except that at joints made with sleeve-type
mechanical couplings, no leakage will be allowed.
[Link] Leakage Testing
For leakage test, use a hydrostatic pressure not less than the maximum
working pressure of the system, and in accordance with NFPA 24. Leakage
test may be performed at the same time and at the same test pressure as the
pressure test.
3.2.4 Special Testing Requirements for Fire Service
Test water mains and water service lines providing fire service or water and
fire service in accordance with NFPA 24. The additional water added to the
system must not exceed the limits given in NFPA 24
3.2.5 Backflow Prevention Assembly Forward Flow Test
Where backflow prevention assemblies are provided under this contract, each
backflow prevention assembly shall be tested at system flow demand,
including all applicable hose streams, as specified in NFPA 13. Provide all
equipment and instruments necessary to conduct a complete forward flow test,
including 2.5 inch diameter hoses, playpipe nozzles, calibrated pressure
gauges, pitot tube gauge, plus all necessary supports to safely secure hoses

and nozzles during the test. At the system demand flow, the pressure
readings and pressure drop (friction) across the assembly shall be recorded.
Provide a metal placard on the backflow prevention assembly that lists the
pressure readings both upstream and downstream of the assembly, total
pressure drop, and the system test flow rate. The pressure drop shall be
compared to the manufacturer's data
3.2.6 Flushing
Underground piping supplying fire sprinkler systems shall be flushed in
accordance with NFPA 24. This includes the requirement to flush the lead-in
connection to the fire protection system at a flow rate not less that the
calculated maximum water demand rate of the system.
3.2.7 Certificates
Certificates shall attest that tests set forth in each applicable referenced
publication have been performed, whether specified in that publication to be
mandatory or otherwise and that production control tests have been performed

For underground piping systems that supply fire protection systems, or lead
to fire protection supply piping, provide evidence of installation in
accordance with applicable standards for the types of piping, and the
Contractor’s Material and Test Certificate for Underground Piping as
provided in NFPA 24.
3.3 CLEANUP
Upon completion of the installation of water lines, and appurtenances, all
debris and surplus materials resulting from the work shall be removed.
