Cómo se apagó el reactor de Chernobyl

The Chernobyl nuclear plant was built by the Soviet Union during the Cold War to establish itself as a nuclear power. The catastrophic explosion on April 26, 1986, resulted from a flawed safety test, leading to immediate deaths and long-term health consequences for thousands due to radiation exposure. The disaster prompted global changes in nuclear safety regulations and left the surrounding areas uninhabitable, while wildlife began to thrive in the absence of human activity.

Objetivo de la construcción de la planta: (Objective of the plant construction)

The principal reason of why they built the nuclear plant of Chernobyl is because in this time, in the
cold war, the Soviet Union wants to be recognized as a nuclear potence, so, they built nuclear
plants around the country.

Prypiat, la ciudad que se construyó para los trabajadores de la planta

Pripyat was a city that it was built in 1970 for the workers of the nuclear plant with her families.
Pripyat was called as “The city of the future” because Pripyat was having an important nuclear
plant. After the accident, now Pripyat is a ghost city, without people, cause by the radiation.

Un día antes de la explosión

A day before the accident, they realized a lot of test in Chernobyl, because they wanted to reduce
the potence of nuclear energy, this test produced a series of imbalances in the reactor 4 of the
nuclear power plant.

La explosión, Como sucedió, Porque explotó

The explosion happened in the 1:23 a.m. on the day of 26 April of 1986 in the morning, previously
a simple test to calculate different situations in the case that the nuclear plant doesn’t have
enough energy and power. But there was a mistake occurred during the test in this day,

In a few seconds, an uncontrolled reaction caused a pressure in the reactor 4 in the form of steam.
And then, an explosion occurred, with the explosion the reactor roof was destroyed for the same,
(for the steam), releasing all kinds of radiation and radioactive bits.

About two or three seconds later, a second explosion occurred, and throw more fuel, and then, a
fire started on the roof of the reactor 3, the automatic safety systems did not come into action
because they had been switched before the test. And would start the worst nuclear accident in the
history, worse than Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Quienes murieron

Initially only 28 people dead during the explosion, and about 100 were injured for the accident.
Later the number of people who had radiation by the accident and explosion was about 6000 with
kids and adolescents, developing cancer. And after tests showed that another 9,000 could also
develop cancer.

Hasta cuando sacaron a la población (when did they get out the population)

April 27, the government began evacuations of 50,000 residents. Residents were told they would
be away for just a few days, so they took very little with them. Most would never return to their
homes.
Como se dio cuenta el mundo. (How the world realized)

The soviet leaders didn’t make the notice of tell all to the world, they took a lot of time, did not
make any official statement about the accident, until the Swedish leaders noticed of unusually
increase of radiation.

So, the 28 of April, the Government officially announced the accident.

Hasta donde llego la nube de contaminación: (How far the pollution cloud had reached)

The radioactive cloud was deposited nearby as dust and debris, but was also carried by the wind
over Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, Scandinavia and other parts of Europe. The media quickly ridiculed
the theory that the radioactive cloud had stopped at the borders of France. dwhile the entire
continent was covered by the radioactive cloud, Spain and Portugal were the only countries that
were spared.

Consecuencias de la explosión: (Consequences of the explosion)

The main consequence was radiation in people, health began to be severely affected. People had
all kinds of cancer. Radioactive contamination spread to the Asian and especially European
continents.

The place became unlivable due to the radiation and could not be as it was before, and the
negative ecological consequences increased.

The study of the causes of the accident made the new designs of reactors and nuclear power
plants all over the world to be different. Some plants were shut down immediately, this would
create new regulations for all nuclear power plants in the world, monitoring radiation levels
constantly.

The Chernobyl accident was relevant for the end of the cold war, after affecting the reputation of
the Soviet Union.

Enfermedades (Diseases)

The diseases produced by the radiation were thyroid cancer, leukemia and other types of cancer.

Also, people developed mental sickness such as anxiety, depression, changes in their life (such as
diet or alcohol).

Cuando apagaron la planta (When the plant was turned off)

It was not until 5 a.m. the next day that Reactor No. 3 was shut down. About 24 hours later,
Reactors 1 and 2 were also shut down.

El Sarcófago que construyeron para que dejara de librar radioactividad la planta (Sarcophagus)

It is a steel structure built to cover Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant No. 4 after the accident. It was
designed to contain radioactive contamination and to protect the site from weather conditions.
For 206 days, a steel sarcophagus was made to bury the damaged reactor and contain any release
of radiation. The structure was designed to contain the radioactive waste for 100 years. After the
installation of the new structure, the radiation near the plant was reduced to only a fraction.
Pie de elefante (Elephant foot)

Deep in the basement of Reactor 4 lies the Chernobyl elephant foot, a huge, highly radioactive
nuclear mass.

It is named for its wrinkled appearance, which to some observers resembled the foot of an
elephant.

The elephant's foot emitted enough radiation to kill a person one meter away in less than two
minutes. Today, that radiation has decreased.

Que paso con bosques y animales

Wildlife, including wild boar, wolves, beavers and bison, showed signs of flourishing at the
Chernobyl site, although radiation exposure could not be good for the animals, but without people
there, the animals could live anymore.

Today tourists can visit the place, which seems frozen in time. But, with the necessary permission
from the government.
