Let’s Use It!

Exercise 1.1

Write an algebraic equation for these situations and solve for the unknown. You may
use any letter of your choice to represent the unknown.

1. The cost of a television with remote control is ₱16,490. This amount is ₱1,250
more than the cost without a remote control. Find the cost of the television
without the remote control.
2. By purchasing a fleet of cars, a company receives a discount of ₱10, 972 on
each car purchased. This amount is 8% of the regular price. Find the regular
price.
3. Grace is 4 years older than Elena. If Grace is 9 years old, how old is Elena?
4. Jane spent ₱4,200 for shoes. This was ₱140 less than twice what she spent
for a blouse. How much was the blouse?
5. The sum of two numbers is 84, and one of them is 12 mor than the other.
What are the two numbers?
6. The sum of two consecutive numbers is 37. What are they?
7. Julie has ₱5,000 which is eight hundred pesos more than twice what John
has. How much has John?

1. x= 16,490-1,250
x= 15,240 cost of television without the remote control

2. D= 10,972

( 100 ÷ 8 ) D=R
(12.5) (10,972) = R
R= 137,150 regular price of the car

3. G=E+4 where E is Elena

Let G=9
9=E+4
9-4=E
E=5 years old

4. 4,200+140=2b
4,340 2 b
=
2 2
2,170=b blouse

5. X+ (x+12)=84
2x=84-12
2 x 72
=
2 2
X=36 first number
36+ 12= 48 second number

6. (x-1) + (x)=37
2x-1=37
2 x 38
=
2 2
x=19 second number

19-1=18 first number

7. x=John’s money
2x+800=5000

2x=5000-800

2 x 4200
=
2 2

x=2,100 John’s money
