“Libido” program

A. Rationale
As a country with a culture of being “mahinhin”, sexuality have been always a sensitive issue
that garners controversies. In the case of the youth, Filipino boys immaturely think that this is a
testament of strength and courage while Filipino girls were judged whether they are being
“pokpok” (dirty or pervert) or “malandi” (flirt). However, the Filipino youths were seen to
become more enganging now-a-days. According to Athira Nortajuddin (2021), Philippines have
been going to a teenage pregnancy crisis. The United Nation Population Fund even declared in
the year 2016 that the country has the highest teenage pregnancy cases in Asia. (Retrieved from
[Link] In fact, the CNN Philippines even warned that this cases have been
increasing every year. (Retrieved from [Link] Furthermore, the
Department of Health of the Philippines also report a growing case of HIV/AIDS in the country.
This disease was studied and observed to be rampant in the adolescents. (Retrieved from
[Link] As we can see, it is a high time to discuss and improve sexuality in the
minds of Filipino, especially for teenagers.
The key to the predicament is to understand Sexuality and Sexual- Self. Sexuality isn’t about
the act itself and the frequency it is made, but is defined as the intimate thoughts and emotions
a person have towards another person. (Retrieved from [Link]
These feelings and ideas are needed to be interpreted so that we may fully understand our very
own self. People should know that these sexual urges are innate to every creature. Biologically,
we were inclined to reproduce. Thus, this is a matter of control. (Retrieved from
[Link] By having sexual intercourse, we let our libido
drives us due to the intoxicating feeling it brought. Sadly, there are a lot of consequences comes
with it. It is already shown above that unplanned pregnancy and STD being acquired can happen.
This is where Sexual-self comes in and developing it becomes important.
There a lot of positive effects in being aware and developing one’s Sexual-self. Aside from
avoiding the problems stated above, an aware person may know fully well and accept what are
his/her gender preferences. By understanding who really the person is attracted to, they may
also understand their own emotions and actions. This could also change the decisions they
make. (Alexandra Solomon, 2020). Pychologist Grant Hilary Brenner (2017), also said that Sexual-
self affects our relationship patterns. In addition, on the idea of sexual education, a lot of study
discusses positive result with regard to sexual-self-awareness. Breakwell and Millward (1997),
presented a negative correlation between sexual-self-awareness and sexual risk-taking.
Moreover, a journal by nursing researchers in Taiwan concluded that Sexual-self-awareness
lowers that engagement of young girls in doing intercourse. Lastly, Larain Writer (1988), said
that the discussion of sexual-self-concept encourages the use of contraceptive and family
planning.
With regards to all of this, the proponent would create a program to raise Sexual-self-
awareness. The program would discuss sexual health that would encompass from issues up to
sexual education and development.

Sexual self-concept plays a crucial role in the use of contraceptives. It encourages individuals to take charge of their sexual health by fostering an understanding of personal preferences and needs. This awareness leads to more informed decisions regarding contraception use. The discussion of sexual-self-concept has been found to promote the use of contraceptives and helps in family planning . This is supported by the findings of Larain Writer (1988), who emphasized the importance of this concept in encouraging contraceptive use .

The "Libido" program aims to tackle teenage pregnancy and HIV/AIDS by developing the sexual self-concept of teenagers, promoting family planning and contraceptive use, and helping youth identify their own sexuality . The program addresses sexual health comprehensively through seminars, free contraceptive distribution, and educational materials, aiming to decrease incidences of teenage pregnancy and rise in HIV/AIDS by empowering young individuals with knowledge and tools to make informed sexual decisions .

Cultural perceptions of sexuality significantly impact the effectiveness of programs aimed at increasing sexual-health education in the Philippines by shaping societal attitudes and openness to discussing sexual topics. Traditional views often stigmatize open discussions about sexuality, leading to embarrassment and misinformation among adolescents. These cultural barriers may hinder participation in educational programs and limit their effectiveness. However, programs like "Libido" aim to counter these perceptions by normalizing conversations about sexuality and promoting an understanding of its importance for personal health and well-being .

The concept of the Sexual-self helps in reducing sexual risk behaviors by encouraging a deeper understanding of one's own thoughts, emotions, and attractions regarding sexuality. This self-awareness enables individuals to make informed decisions, understand their preferences, and engage in safer sexual practices. Studies have shown a negative correlation between sexual self-awareness and sexual risk-taking and suggest that awareness lowers the engagement of young girls in intercourse .

Understanding sexuality at a younger age is important for Filipino teenagers as it equips them to handle complex emotions and societal influences regarding sex and relationships. Early awareness helps prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases and reduces instances of teenage pregnancy by encouraging informed decision-making and responsible sexual behavior. The "Libido" program emphasizes this by targeting adolescents aged 16-20 to instill essential knowledge before they encounter potential risks .

To improve the outreach and impact of sexual health programs like "Libido," measures such as fostering partnerships with local schools and community organizations can be taken to reach a wider audience. Tailoring educational materials to be culturally sensitive and accessible to various demographics is essential. Additionally, leveraging digital platforms for program delivery can engage tech-savvy adolescents, while training educators and health workers to promote and support these programs enhances their credibility and effectiveness. Regular evaluations and feedback mechanisms can ensure the program evolves to meet the current needs and challenges faced by Filipino youth .

The "Libido" program proposes several educational strategies to enhance sexual health awareness, including video presentations to depict the severity of teenage pregnancy and HIV situations, free contraceptive distribution to increase accessibility, and seminars to provide in-depth information on relevant topics. Additionally, brochures are distributed as a cost-effective way to spread knowledge, and Q&A sessions are held to address participants' questions and provide professional advice .

The integration of sexual self-awareness in educational programs influences adolescents' decisions regarding sexual health by fostering a deeper understanding of their own sexuality, emotions, and preferences. This awareness leads to more responsible sexual behaviors, as individuals are better equipped to assess the risks and make decisions that align with their values and health priorities. Programs encourage the use of contraception and family planning by discussing sexual self-concepts, therefore reducing sexual risk-taking among teenagers .

Filipino youth face cultural challenges in discussing sexuality due to the traditional cultural norms that associate openness about sexuality with negative traits such as being 'pokpok' (dirty or pervert) or 'malandi' (flirt). These cultural stigmas contribute to public health issues such as teenage pregnancy and the spread of HIV/AIDS, as they hinder open dialogue and education on sexual health, ultimately impacting the awareness and responsibility of young individuals regarding their sexual well-being .

Implementing a program like "Libido" in high schools and colleges could lead to significant public health benefits, such as a reduction in teenage pregnancies and a decrease in the spread of sexually transmitted diseases like HIV. By increasing sexual self-awareness and promoting informed choices, the program empowers adolescents to practice safer sex and make conscious decisions about their sexual health. Additionally, it encourages the use of contraceptives, supports family planning, and educates youth on gender and sexuality, contributing to healthier communities and reducing health care burdens associated with adolescent sexual health issues .
