A. Reading comprehension (12 marks)
Your uncle works for a charity in Hong Kong. He and your cousin, Cathy, are visiting a village school in
Guizhou. Cathy sends you a letter about the school. Read the letter below.
15 August
Hi there!
Are you enjoying your holiday? I hope you are.
Guess where I’m spending my summer holiday? Right now, my dad and I are staying in a small village on top
5 of a mountain in Guizhou! Guizhou is between Yunnan and Hunan provinces. My dad is working on a project
here to help a local school improve its facilities. It’s a tough job, but also an important one.
Green Mountain School is very poor and the students all come from disadvantaged families. The classrooms
are small and the desks and chairs are old. There is no library or computer lab. There is no art room, music
room or science lab. There isn’t even a canteen. The students have to bring food from home every day and have
10 lunch in their classrooms. Worse still, there’s only one teacher. How can they learn in this environment?
The students don’t have many extra-curricular activities. They can play basketball in the basketball court after
class or sing in the choir. Once a week, they have English Corner. They only have one English textbook,
though. They all have to share!
Back home, lots of teenagers are unhappy about their schools. They don’t realize how privileged we are to be
15 in our modern, spacious schools. Now, I feel very fortunate that my school offers me so many opportunities.
What are you doing for your holiday? When are you coming home? I hope you’re having a great time!
Hugs,
Cathy
