ABSTRACT

ENHANCEMENT CONTEXTUAL MATERIALS FOR READING OF THE

GRADE 8 STUDENTS OF TOLOSA

NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

by:

RHEALYN M. ENCINA

This study aimed to develop Enhancement Contextual Materials for Reading of the

Grade 8 Students of Tolosa National High School for the Academic Year 2019-

2020.

Specifically, the researcher attempted to answer the following questions:

1. What is the proficiency level of the Grade 8 students of Tolosa National

High School? 2. What Enhancement Contextual Materials for Reading of the

Grade 8 Students may be developed based on the findings of the study? 3. What is

the performance level of the Grade 8 students before and after using the

enhancement contextual materials?

The major purpose of this study was to develop Enhancement Contextual

Materials for Reading of the Grade 8 students of Tolosa National High School,

Brgy. Malbog, Tolosa Leyte. There were forty-seven (47) total number of

respondents, Twenty-two (22) of them were Male and twenty-five (25) of them

were female students.

Table 2 shows the proficiency level in reading of the Grade 8 students of

Tolosa National High School. The results showed that out of forty-seven (47)

student-respondents, there were only two (2) students identified as “Outstanding”,

three (3) identified as “ Very satisfactory”, five (5) identified as “Satisfactory”;

and five (5) were identified as “Fairly Satisfactory” and thirty-two (32) were

identified as “Did Not Meet Expectations”.

Based on the findings of the study, the mean score of the male-respondents

was 72.90 and the mean score of the female-respondents was 73.07, The

Combined Mean Score of the proficiency level of the Grade 8 students was

“73.07” which means that the proficiency level of the Grade 8 students of Tolosa

National High School, Brgy. Malbog, Tolosa, Leyte was, “Did Not Meet

Expectations”.

Table 3 shows the performance level of the Grade 8 students before using

the enhancement contextual materials. The results showed that out of forty-seven
(47) student-respondents, there was one (1) student identified as “Outstanding”,

two (2) identified as “Very Satisfactory”, four (4) identified as “Satisfactory”;

five (5) were identified as “Fairly Satisfactory” and thirty-five (35) were

identified as “Did Not Meet Expectations”.

The data showed that the Grade 8 students of Tolosa National High School,

Tolosa, Leyte, need varied instructional materials in order to enhance their reading

skills in English. This could be achieved through the utilization of the

Enhancement Contextual Materials for Reading of the Grade 8 Students. Table 4

Showed the performance level after using the enhancement contextual materials.

There were five (5) respondents who were identified as “Outstanding”, six (6)

students who were identified as “Very Satisfactory”, thirteen (13) who were

identified as “Satisfactory”, twelve (12) were identified as “Fairly Satisfactory”

and eleven (11) were identified as “Did Not Meet Expectations”.

The data justified that there was an improvement on the reading

comprehension of the Grade 8 students of Tolosa National High School, Brgy,

Malbog, Tolosa Leyte However, they need the Enhancement Contextual Materials

for Reading Skills and other instructional reading materials to improve their

reading skills.

The study employed a pre- and post-evaluation methodology to assess the effectiveness of enhancement contextual materials at Tolosa National High School. The approach involved comparing student performance levels before and after the implementation of these materials . This method contributed to the study's validity by providing quantitative evidence of progress and improvement, illustrated by the tangible increase in the number of students achieving satisfactory or higher proficiency post-intervention . Such a structured method ensures reliable evidence for conclusions drawn.

The primary challenge faced by the Grade 8 students prior to implementing the enhancement contextual materials was a reading proficiency level that did not meet expectations. Specifically, 35 out of 47 students did not meet expectations, indicating a significant need for varied instructional materials to improve reading skills . Success post-implementation was measured by improved performance where the number of students not meeting expectations decreased to eleven, while the number associated with satisfactory or better levels increased significantly .

Focusing on reading skills enhancement for Grade 8 students is crucial due to the high percentage of students not meeting reading proficiency expectations, with 35 out of 47 falling into this category prior to intervention at Tolosa National High School . The rationale involves addressing foundational literacy skills essential for overall academic success and future educational opportunities, as improved reading proficiency also facilitates better comprehension across various subjects . Thus, targeted interventions become necessary in bridging literacy gaps.

The significance of developing contextual materials tailored for specific academic environments, such as Tolosa National High School, lies in the evident improvement in reading proficiency among students. Before the intervention, a majority of students were not meeting expectations; however, post-intervention, there was a substantial increase in proficiency levels, indicating that contextual materials effectively addressed the unique needs of the students . This highlights the critical role of environment-specific resources in bridging educational gaps.

The identification of student performance levels before and after the use of enhancements indicated that while improvements were seen, there remained a notable portion of students not meeting proficiency expectations even post-intervention (11 students). These results suggest that while the materials were beneficial, further educational research and development are needed to explore additional or alternative strategies to support those who continue to struggle. This ongoing disparity underlines the necessity for diverse, adaptive teaching methodologies to address varying learner needs.

Before the use of enhancement contextual materials, the proficiency levels of Grade 8 students at Tolosa National High School showed only one student as “Outstanding,” two as “Very Satisfactory,” four as “Satisfactory,” five as “Fairly Satisfactory,” and thirty-five as “Did Not Meet Expectations” . After using the enhancement contextual materials, there was marked improvement, with five students identified as “Outstanding,” six as “Very Satisfactory,” thirteen as “Satisfactory,” twelve as “Fairly Satisfactory,” and eleven as “Did Not Meet Expectations” . This indicates that the intervention effectively enhanced student reading proficiency.

Personal dedications and acknowledgments in academic research reflect the personal and professional challenges faced by researchers by highlighting the network of support essential for academic success. In the case of this study, acknowledgments to family, advisors, and colleagues underscore the reliance on personal relationships and mentorships to navigate the complexities of research and academic requirements . This illustrates how such dedications manifest appreciation and emphasize the significance of a supportive community in overcoming research challenges.

Before the application of enhancement contextual materials, male students had a mean score of 72.90, whereas female students had a mean score of 73.07. Overall, the combined proficiency level was 73.07, categorizing the proficiency as 'Did Not Meet Expectations' . The minimal difference between male and female mean scores suggests that gender distribution had little impact on the initial proficiency outcomes.

Teacher involvement is pivotal in educational research settings, as shown in the Tolosa National High School study. The commitment of teachers and staff to support the development and implementation of enhancement contextual materials directly contributed to improving student performance . This involvement highlights the importance of collaborative efforts in educational settings to tailor interventions that meet specific student needs, suggesting that active teacher participation in research and implementation can enhance educational outcomes.

The study suggests that tailored educational materials positively impact both male and female students' learning outcomes, as evidenced by the improved performance across the board. While initial differences between male and female mean scores were minimal, the overall improvement post-intervention implies that both genders benefited similarly from the contextual enhancements, underscoring the effectiveness of tailored materials in supporting diverse student groups without favoring one gender over the other .
