Types of Wet and Dry Vacuum Pumps

The document discusses different types of wet and dry vacuum pumps, including their uses and benefits. Wet vacuum pumps use water or oil for lubrication or sealing, while dry pumps do not require lubrication or maintenance. Common pump types discussed are liquid ring pumps, oil-sealed rotary vane pumps, claw pumps, and rotary screw pumps.

Wet Vacuum Pumps

Wet vacuum pumps include both water-based and oil-lubricated pumps, where water or oil is used for
lubrication or sealing. Each of these pump subcategories comes with its own benefits: water-based
pumps are economical and corrosion-resistant, while oil-lubricated pumps work great for applications
that require high pumping speeds. Any wet vacuum pump, however, can be contaminated by oil or
water, and these liquids must be disposed of appropriately.

Oil-sealed rotary vane pump – In this type of vacuum compressor pump, oil is used to seal the pump and
cool the vanes. This pump has a robust structure and great oil retention. The oil-sealed rotary vane
pump is used in packaging, woodworking, paper production and printing.

Liquid ring pump – The liquid ring pump has a simple but robust design with only two moving parts: the
shaft and the impeller. This pump is ideal for handling extreme vapour loads, and has a high tolerance for
liquid carryover during distillation, drying and evaporation processes. The liquid ring pump is used for
filtration and dewatering.

Dry Vacuum Pumps

Dry pumps are not lubricated, and thus do not generate waste materials. Although dry pumps are pricier,
they require little to no maintenance, which leads to savings in the long-term. The major benefit of a dry
vacuum compressor pump is that they do not run the risk of contamination.
Claw pump – This pump is designed to withstand harsh industrial environments while providing a high
flow rate. It can be used for a variety of applications, including packaging lines, moulding machines and
pneumatic conveyors. Multiple-unit dry claw pumps make use of variable speed drives, which maximize
efficiency.

Oil-less rotary vane pump – This is a long-lasting vacuum compressor pump with low maintenance and
operational costs. It can run continuously at atmospheric pressure and the highest vacuum. The
applications of this pump include packaging and woodworking machines and pneumatic conveyor
systems.

Rotary screw pump – This type of pump produces less noise and heat compared to oil-sealed pumps. It is
usually equipped with a variable speed drive for increased energy and economical savings. This pump
also has a high throughput capacity and can operate in harsh environments. The rotary screw pump is
used in large industrial vacuums for operational processes in food packaging and glass and plastics
manufacturing.
