Virtual Fixity Depth in Pile Foundations

The document discusses the virtual fixity depth of piles (Zf) in stiff clays and soft clays/granular soils. For stiff clays, the soil modulus is constant with depth and Zf is calculated as 1.4 times the pile radius (R). For soft clays and granular soils, the soil modulus increases linearly with depth, and Zf is calculated as 1.8 times the parameter T. The document provides calculations of Zf as 2.53m for stiff clays and 3.44m for soft clays/granular soils based on the given parameters.

Virtual Fixity Depth of Pile

For Stiff and O.C. Clays, the soil modulus is generally assumed to be constant with depth, for this case:

D = 0.60 m
E = 20,000,000 kN/m2
I = 0.006362 m4
k = 20,000 kN/m3 Table 6.5 Assuming k = k1
R = 1.80
Zf = 1.4R = 2.53 m

For Soft N.C. clays and granular soils, the soil modulus is assumed to increase linearly with depth, for which:

D = 0.60 m
E = 20,000,000 kN/m2
I = 0.006362 m4
nh = 5000 kN/m3 Reese et al
T = 1.91
Zf = 1.8T = 3.44 m

Flexural Length = 3.44 m

Reo Length = 4.00 m
