2.4 Formula for voltage drop

All calculations are based on the following formula for voltage drop in single-phase circuits:

∆U = I(Rcosϕ + Xsinϕ ) + U - U 2 − I 2 ( Xcosϕ - Rsinϕ ) 2

Examination shows that the voltage drop is calculated with sufficient accuracy by using
the first term of the equation only.

∆U = I(Rcosϕ + Xsinϕ )

From this formula the following can be derived:

The voltage drop in percent for single-phase circuits is:

∆U(%) = 1 ( R’cosϕ + X’sinϕ ) 2L / 10U

The voltage drop in percent for three-phase circuits is:

∆U(%) = 1 ( R’cosϕ + X’sinϕ ) 2L / 10U

Where :

I =line current (amps)

R’ resistance (ohms per km)
X’ reactance (ohms per km)
L =cable length (meters)
U =line-to-line voltage (volts)
cos ϕ = power factor during running condition
R’ will be taken at the maximum conductor temperature of the selected cable type (100ºC),

X’ will be taken at 50 Hz.
