The Effectiveness of Technological Advances on Language Learning


Introduction
Technologies have grown so fast in this era, it is the new age for humankind from steam
age to modern age. Many things have changed, almost every task now are done by robot or
machine, newspapers become digital, and even money now become digital. In this modern era,
information now can be accessed through small device that we called smartphone, everyone can
learn new things every day, anywhere and anytime. With technologies, everything seems easier
now, even the teaching field become easier in teaching and easier in understanding the material.

Technologies have affected the teaching field so much, especially in language learning,
learning activities are now easier than it is in the past. For example, in the 1900s learning
activities is done in the classroom with the teacher in the front writing some educational text on
the black board while their students fall asleep, another is having a chat, and another is looking at
the window and daydreaming while in this era the student can learn by themselves inside the
classroom using educational video, even now the classroom become online and using video call
to talk to each other. Steve Johnson (2005), in his nationally bestselling book Everything Bad is
Good for You, posited that technology is making us more intelligent due our means of obtaining,
interpreting, and processing information. With the technology, language are now can be learned
easily through some online dictionary or mobile app, but without the native speaker or teacher
who understand more, people tends to learn language in the wrong way.

The purpose of this study is to find out the most effective learning method from every
advancement of technology on language learning, to find out if it can be effective to learn
language without a teacher or the native speaker. This topic is identified as importance to
language learners in providing them the correct material and how to use it the correct way.
Methodology

The research method for this study is qualitative method using literature review to obtain the
data. The data used in this study were existing data from public libraries, online journals, and
website. These data were first examined, summarized, and then collated to increase overall
effectiveness of the research. Secondary research was used in this research because it is much
more effective than primary research which data is a raw data collected first hand, while
secondary research used existing data.

Research Method

Thematic analysis was used to analyze the collected data and to understand the data more deeply.
According to Virginia Braun and Victoria Clarke (2006) “thematic analysis provides a flexible and
useful research tool, which can potentially provide a rich and detailed, yet complex account of data ”,
thematic analysis is more useful as it provides flexible and useful tools to examine and acquired
more meaning from the data which eventually resulted in a rich, detailed, and complex research
result.
