1 HOST 2: Let us all read a selection adapted from what Causes a Tsunami by
2 Jeremy Cook
3 HOST 1: While we are reading, you may write down facts and events that you
4 may use in answering the questions after.
5 HOST 2: Again, please make sure to take note all the important facts and events
6 in the selection ‘What Causes a Tsunami’
7 HOST 1: One of the most common causes of a tsunami is by an earthquake. The
8 entire planet is covered with pieces of rock that float on liquid magma.
9 These pieces are called tectonic plates. As they move, they can sometimes
10 rub together, causing the ground to shake. When two plates move
11 suddenly, the water on the surface of the Earth gets displaced and can
12 cause a wave. The wave begins to move, and a tsunami is born.
13 HOST 2: When a strong quake occurs under the sea, a tsunami alert is sometimes
14 declared, especially if it is near the shorelines. When this happens, people
15 are advised to evacuate to higher grounds. Disobeying orders to evacuate
16 may cause serious harm or injury to people.
17 MSC: UP AND UNDER
18 HOST 1: So that ends the story. We hope you were able to jot down important
19 events that will help us answer the questions related to the story.
20 HOST 2: And now let us all answer question number 1,
-MORE-

1 HOST 2: What causes a tsunami according to the paragraph?
2 HOST 1: Well, an earthquake causes a tsunami.
3 HOST 2: Did you get the same answer? (PAUSE) Well then, that’s great to
4 know!
5 HOST 1: What about the question what happens when tectonic plates move
6 and rub together?
7 HOST 2: The ground shakes!
8 HOST 1: Did you get the answer right? (Pause) Wow, very good then!
9 HOST 2: What is produced when water on the surface of the earth is displaced?
10 HOST 1: A wave is produced when water on the surface of the earth is
11 displaced.
12 HOST 2: That’s right! What about our learners, did you get the correct answer?
13 (PAUSE) Wow, you are doing great!
14 HOST 1: When is a tsunami alert declared?
15 HOST 2: When a strong quake occurs under the sea.
16 HOST 1: Children, did you get the same answer?(PAUSE) If yes, then you are
17 right!
18 HOST 2: And finally, what is the possible effect of disobeying orders to
19 evacuate?
20 HOST 1: Serious harm or injury
21 HOST 2: That’s right! So we really need to take the tsunami alert seriously.

1 HOST 1: Did you get the answer right? (PAUSE) Great job then!
2 HOST 2: So with this activity, we are having a clearer picture on how complex
3 sentences relate the cause and effect.
4 HOST 1: Let’s go back with the sentences we did after the commercial break.
5 The sentences talk about cause and effect.
6 HOST 2: You may also observe that in those sentences, there is always an event
7 that serves as a cause and another that becomes the effect.
8 HOST 1: Yes, something caused the effect!
9 HOST 2: Wait, what?
10 HOST 1: What I mean us that the cause or the reason will lead to the effect or
11 the result.
12 HOST 2: Ohhh, yes that’s correct.
13 BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER
14 HOST 1: Let us use the sentence ‘Because he played under the rain, his mother
15 became angry’ to analyze how cause and effect work.
16 HOST 1: In this sentence, we can divide it in two parts, the first one is ‘Because
17 he played under the rain’ and the second one is ‘his mother became
18 angry’. Both phrases are separated through a comma.
19 HOST 2: That is right! The phrase, ‘Because he played under the rain’ tells us
20 the reason. And the phrase ‘his mother became angry’ tells us the result
21 of him playing outside.

1 MSC: UP AND UNDER
2 HOST 1: Well, to help us understand more, let us use the second sentence
3 which is ‘When he fell from the tree, the boy broke his leg.’
4 HOST 2: Let us try to use the phrase ‘when he fell from the tree’ and analyze it.
5 The phrase cannot be considered as a sentence because it does not have
6 complete meaning and cannot stand on its own. It is called dependent
7 clause.
8 HOST 1: That’s correct! Again, dependent clauses do not have complete
9 meaning and they cannot stand on their own.
10 HOST 2: for the second phrase, ‘ the boy broke its leg’, we can observe that the
11 group of words have complete meaning, and that is called as
12 independent clause.
13 HOST 1: Why is it called independent clause?
14 HOST 2: It is called independent clause because even without the other phrase
15 or the dependent clause, it portrays complete meaning.
16 BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER
17 HOST 1: Let’s have 1 more example but this time you, our dear listeners, will
18 help us analyze the sentence.
19 HOST 2: the sentence is, ‘The town was put on lockdown since people keep on
20 going out without a mask.’
-MORE-
Using complex … 999
1 HOST 1: Remember that using the words because, as, in order that, since,
2 although, as a result, and so that, are subordinate conjunctions that are
3 always used to begin with a dependent clause or subordinate clause.
4 HOST 2: Again, those conjunctions help us to know where is the dependent
5 clause.
6 HOST 1: So can you help us find where is the subordinate clause in the
7 sentence? (PAUSE) Alright, can you please read aloud your answer?
8 HOST 2: Wow! That is right!
9 SFX: APPLAUSE
10 HOST 1: The dependent clause is, ‘since people keep on going out without
11 masks’.
12 HOST 2: so the other phrase‘ The town was put on lockdown’ is a dependent
13 clause because it has complete meaning.
14 MSC: UP AND UNDER
15 HOST 1: Wow! Great job children! Since you already get the idea, let us make it
16 more clear by saying that a complex sentence is composed of an
17 independent clause and a dependent clause.
18 HOST 2: And that complex sentences can be used to show cause and effect
19 relationship.
20 HOST 1: The reason why something happens is called as the cause
21 HOST 2: And the effect is the result of something that happened
