Abstract
The aim of this research is to investigate how a supportive relationship between teachers and
students in the classroom can improve the learning process. Students will be engaged actively
in the learning instead of being passive learner. I wish to investigate how using communicative
approach and cooperative learning strategies while teaching do affect and improve students’
learning performance. To achieve these goals qualitative data collection was used as the
primary method. The results show that teachers and students value a supportive and caring
relationship between them and that interaction is essential to the teacher-student relationship.
This sense of caring and supporting from teachers motivates students to become a more
interested learner. Students benefit and are motivated when their teachers create a safe and
trustful environment. And also the methods and strategies teachers uses, makes students feel
engaged and stimulated to participate in the learning process. The students have in their mind
that a positive relationship with their teachers positively impacts their interest and motivation
in school which contributes to the enhancement of the learning process.
Introduction
It is generally agreed that good teaching involves good communication between the teacher
and students and also among students. The best productivity in a classroom comes from
effective co-operation between the teacher and the students. Therefore, teachers’ roles can be
vital to the effectivity of the language learning. Teachers need to be supportive. A supportive
teacher is one who creates efficiently a positive classroom environment, who encourages
students to behave well in classroom and to be motivated. Supportive teachers also are
teachers who emphasize the learning process by giving all the students the chance to construct
their learning, and be engaged with the content. To give the students the chance to build
knowledge and develop skills in the English language, teachers should shift from a traditional
teaching method to methods and strategies focused on communicative instruction and
cooperative learning. Communicative instruction and cooperative learning provide students
with the necessary skills to succeed while learning a foreign language because they allow
students to be the center of the learning process and can positively affect students’ learning,
promoting good interaction. Therefore, it is time to change to a method that guarantees
communication and interaction between teacher and students and promote a supportive
relationship between them. The method I propose is Communicative Language Teaching.
Communicative Language Teaching is based on the idea that learners need to be involved in
real communication, using natural strategies for language acquisition, and this will allow them
to learn to use the language in different contexts. A strategy that complements this method is
cooperative learning. Through this strategy student learn from each other and from having to
explain and share their ideas with others. It also promotes good relationships and communication
among students.(Da Luz, 2015)
Literature review
Teaching nowadays is filled with challenges and opportunities, but also with changes. What it is
to be a teacher is changing, and being English as a Second Language teacher involves and
demands new teaching methods, strategies, and activities, new attitudes, values and
perspectives for the classroom. Teacher-student relationships can be the key to whether
positive or negative motivations exist in students’ attitude toward learning, and relationships
can have a deep effect on someone’s life style. By having a supportive relationship with
teachers, students will be motivated, will feel protected and this sense of security and
friendship will create an empathy which is important to get students interested and desirable
to succeed. Hargreaves (1994) stated: Good teaching is charged with positive emotion. It is not
just a matter of knowing one’s subject, being efficient, having correct competencies, or learning
all the right techniques. Good teachers are not just well oiled machines.(Hussain et al., 2013)
They are emotional, passionate beings who connect with their students and fill their work and
classes with pleasure, creativity, challenge and joy. (p. 835). Undoubtedly, good teaching
includes the ability to cultivate relationships; it is caring for and supporting our students, not
just transferring knowledge to them. This thesis will focus on the relationship between teachers
and students in the classroom, examining the interaction between the teachers and students. I
investigate the importance of having a supportive teacher in the classroom, which can create a
safe environment and how developing relationships with students can better orient them and
help them to improve their learning.(Da Luz, 2015)
Methodology
The research question in the current study is that whether the relation between teacher and
student increases after gaining experience level by the teacher. The study has primarily focused
on the private sector undergraduate institutions located in Rawalpindi and Islamabad, Pakistan.
The method of sampling for this study was non-probability or convenient having sample size of
N=60. Teachers with a professional experience level of 1-6 years were included in the research.
The research design used for this study is a qualitative method of interviewing. The interviews
conducted were a semi-structured, in-depth telephone and face-to-face interview. An
unstructured questionnaire was first developed by keeping in mind the research objectives. The
questions were asked from the questionnaire by the researcher and the responses of the
participants were written down on paper and that were later on presented in the results
section of this study.
Analysis and findings
After detail interview with the selected sample, results were compiled according to the specific
questions asked. The results show that experience level is important to develop better
relationship with students as teachers can better understand the psychological, emotional,
intellectual and learning needs of the students and can better apply the teaching pedagogies.
We will discuss each question and its response in detail below. a) Teacher-Student Relationship
Varies with the Amount of Teaching Experience On asking the above question, the participants
agreed with it and responded the variations with reasons as with the passage of time,
understanding is built between the teachers and students. Students came to know about the
teaching style and give feedback regarding the way of teaching. Through this feedback the
teacher can improve his/her teaching style. With teacher’s experience, mode of communication
also improves. Once the teacher came to know about the student’s psychology, he/she can use
different modes to make the teaching understandable. Through experience the teacher can
realize with whom to be frank and with whom to be strict. b) Characteristics of a Positive
Teacher-Student Relationship The topic under discussion is clearly communicated and students
clearly understand it. No biasness or favoritism exists there. Teacher is not tilt towards one
student or a group of students based on gender, caste, race etc. The students can confidently
ask questions from the teacher and the teacher gives answer to the students. c) Positive
Teacher-Student Relationship can be Created with the Experience Yes it takes time to create a
good relationship in personal life or in professional life. A teacher with greater year of
experience due to his/her maximum time spent with the students can better understand the
needs. d) Difficulties in Creating Positive Teacher-Student Relationship Traditional setup and set
of mind may create hurdle in building relationship between the teacher and student.
Conclusion
The review of the literature shows the diverse disciplines of researchers who have all
investigated the effect that building a strong teacher-student relationship has on the learning
environment. While the emphasis on test scores to determine effect teaching and learning has
been prevalent in the last decade due to NCLB (2001) and Race to of sources to indicate that
building a strong relationship with students also contributes greatly to a successful learning
environment. It is my belief that more research is needed to establish practical application
strategies that teachers can use to effectively create a strong and successful relationship with
their students. My study addresses how this participant creates a purposefully designed
learning environment that has a positive effect on her students’ learning. This study participant
uses the relationships she deliberately creates with her students to enhance the learning
environment.
