1. Why is knowledge not enough to affect behavior change?

Behavior change is an act of modifying one’s behavior, this could either be positive or negative
change. The process of changing behavior requires more than just knowing what needs to be
changed. It is not enough that a person is only aware about the problem because in order to make
a difference, action and determination is essential. Just like in nutrition, in order to have a strong
and healthy body, being knowledgeable about how to be healthy is not enough. Application of
that knowledge is required to achieve the desired outcome.

2. Write a list explaining the differences between nutrition education and nutrition behavior change
communication (BCC).
Nutrition education has the main goal of feeding its audience with knowledge regarding the
process of providing or obtaining the food necessary for health and growth. Educating someone
focuses on influencing their mentality. It is more on correcting the misconceptions on certain
things which involves nourishment. Nutrition behavior change communication is about
influencing not just how a person thinks, but also persuading him/her to apply the knowledge
he/she learned. The success of BCC depends on how a person was able to make a difference for
him/herself.

3. Why is BCC important?

Behavior Change Communication is an interactive process with communities to develop tailored
messages and approaches using a variety of communication channels to develop positive
behaviors; promote and sustain individual, community and societal behavior change; and
maintain appropriate behaviors. It is important because it influences the lives of the people in the
community to be on the right track and achieve positive results from changing their behaviors.
This also serve as an eye opener to all so they would achieve of meeting the goal of modifying
one’s behavior for their own good.

4. What are the steps in delivering nutrition counselling as illustrated in the GALIDRA cycle?
The steps in delivering nutrition counselling are as follow:
 Greet the client. Ask him or her to sit down and then exchange introductions to establish a
comfortable atmosphere.
 Ask the client about his or her situation and current practices using open-ended questions
and familiar language.
 Listen to what the client and /or caregivers says. Notice body language, use probing
questions, and reflect back what the client says to make sure you understand it.
 Identify the client’s key problems and help select the most important ones to address.
 Discuss options, considering what is realistic and using visual materials to engage the client
and/or caregiver in discussion
 Recommend and negotiate a small, doable action, explaining the rationale and benefits.
 Ask the client to repeat what he or she understood from the discussion and what action he or
she agrees to try at home.
 Make a follow-up appointment and ask the client to repeat the date.

5. Why is nutrition counselling important?

Nutrition counselling is a process by which a health professional with special training in nutrition
helps people make healthy food choices and form healthy eating habits. This act is necessary in
order for the people who need guidance and support in achieving a healthy and strong body, be
able to know what to do with a supervision by the nutrition counsellor. This would be a success
when the people involved which are the patient and the health worker be able to work hand and
hand to address the nutrition needs of the patient.

6. Enumerate and discuss the steps in nutritional care process.

The Nutrition Care Process (NCP) is designed to improve the consistency and quality of
individualized care for patients/clients or groups and the predictability of the patient/client
outcomes. It is not intended to standardize nutrition care for each patient/client, but to establish
a standardized process for providing care. The first step is Assessment. It is a systematic approach
to collect, classify, and synthesize important and relevant data needed to identify nutrition-
related problems and their causes. The second step is Diagnosis. It is a nutrition and dietetics
practitioner’s identification and labeling of an existing nutrition problems that the practitioner is
responsible for treating. The third step is Nutrition Intervention. It is a purposely planned actions
designed with the intent of changing a nutrition-related behavior, risk factor, environmental
condition, or aspect of health status to resolve or improve the identified nutrition diagnoses or
nutrition problems. The last step is Monitoring & Evaluation. It being done to determine and
measure the amount of progress made for the nutrition intervention and whether the nutrition
related goals/expected outcomes are being met.

7. CASE STUDY.

Case 1. A woman has heard the new breastfeeding information, and her husband and mother-in-law
are also talking about it, she is thinking about trying exclusive breastfeeding because she thinks it will
be best for her child.
1. What stage in the behavior change model do you think each person has reached?
The mother is currently on the 3rd stage of behavior change, because base on the given case
above, she is already aware about breastfeeding but still contemplating for she lacks
knowledge about it and so she is in need of information and continued support and persuasion
so she would consider to try exclusive breastfeeding.
2. As a future nurse, what could you do to help each of the women?
As a future nurse, I would give her the simplest explanation about breastfeeding using the
language that she would be able to comprehend all the information that I would be providing
her. I would be explaining to her the benefits of it not just to her but also to the baby. After
doing so, I would make sure that she was able to grab the necessary data regarding exclusive
breastfeeding by letting her talk about the topic and whenever she would commit an error, I
would immediately correct her to avoid confusion and she would now consider doing the act
of breastfeeding her child.
Case 2. A woman has brought her eight-month-old child to the baby weighing session. The child has
lost weight and the mother asks the health worker for advice.
1. What stage in the behavior change model do you think each person has reached?
The mother is on the 1st stage of behavior stage because she was still not aware of the things
to be changed in order for her baby to gain weight. And so in order for her to be
knowledgeable regarding the strategies she could use for her baby, she has to be informed by
a health worker.
2. As a future nurse, what could you do to help each of the women?
As a future nurse, I would provide her the necessary information that she needs to know so
that her child would be able to gain weight. I would leave the decision to the mother whether
she would be following my advices or not. At least, I know that I was able to help her be aware
of the things she could do to help her child.

Case 3. In the past month, a health worker talked with a mother about gradually starting to feed her
seven-month-old baby three times a day instead of just once a day. The mother started to give meal
and a snack and then added a third feed.
1. What stage in the behavior change model do you think each person has reached?
The situation indicates that the mother is currently on the 5 th stage of behavior change which
is the trial stage, because she is already trying to implement the change, she was informed
about by the health worker. On this stage she would be experiencing difficulties and is
required more support, encouragement and guidance in order to continue what she has
started.
2. As a future nurse, what could you do to help each of the women?
As a future healthcare provider, I would monitor the improvement of behavior change she is
in. Since she is currently on the trial stage, I would guide her and correct the things that she
would do improperly so she would be more inspired to continue her progress up until the last
stage.
