Read and collect at least 5 review of related literature and studies that you are going to organize
and write in Chapter II of your research/study. You may include here a theoretical framework
that supports your study.

Learning in new normal in education is a challenge for the students, teachers and even
parents. Schools adapt blended learning for the students to learn amidst this pandemic.
Blended learning is a combination of both online and offline learning methodologies with
the state of art and/or technology. Online is when the students’ study with their teacher
and classmates through an application that uses a webcam while offline is when the
teacher provides the students with the lesson, seatwork or assignment that they can finish
at their own pace (The New Normal Education in the Philippines, 2020). This learning
situation of the students brought difficulty and challenges on their learning experiences
and one of these is the stress. This learning difficulties is giving more pressure with the
students.
According to it Meyer, (1959), stress is the body’s nonspecific response mechanisms
towards demands or strains made on it. It is a process by which we perceive and cope
with environmental threats and challenges. Academic stress is a common phenomenon
faced by university students. Additionally, Academic stress has been identified as the
primary cause of these alarming figures. Lee & Larson (2000) explain this stress as an
interaction between environmental stressors, student’s appraisal and reactions for the
same. It has now become a grave reality that is termed as a “career stopper” (Kadapatti &
Vijayalaxmi, 2012). It therefore, becomes a significant cause of concern as it is
symptomatic of rising mental health concerns in India (Nadamuri& Ch,2011). On other
hand, students report experiencing academic stress at predictable times each semester
with the greatest sources of academic stress resulting from taking and studying for exams,
grade competition, and the large amount of content to master in a small amount of time
Abouserie (1994). The school environment on its part also piles up pressure on
the students. The pressure to perform well in the examinationor test and time allocated
makes academic environment very stressful (Erkutlu &Chafra, 2006). In addition to that,
the volume of people within the academic environment also contributes to stress among
students.

Furthermore, stress affect the productivity or the output students make. When students
are stressed up they turn not to give their maximum best when doing school work and as
a result, it manifests in the outputs the bring which are clearly seen in the grades. Stress
makes students spend fewer hours trying to get some school work done and they also do
it in a shabby manner not following the instructions giving the assignments in question.
They also don't make adequate preparation for examinations. In the long term, it can even
affect their plans for the future. Also, stress affects the initiative skills of students. Most
students when stressed upturn to lack the ability to bring up new ideas to solve problems
or issues, thus when students are faced with some challenges which might be even so
easy to solve because they are stressed up to refuse or are unable to rack their brains to
find solutions to that problem.

Conceptual Framework

This study presents the dependent and the independent variables that will be apply in the
current study. The conceptual framework is geared by the academic stress and academic
performance of 3rd year BEEd students if ISU-Cabagan.

Based on the illustration above, shows the dependent and independent variables in this study.
The first box contains the academic stress which serves as independent variable which will affect
the second box contains the academic performance which serves as dependent variable.

The academic stress is caused by several factors such as disconnectivity, financial,

household choirs, negative attitude of parent, increased classwork loads and examinations. These
factors can affect the General Weighted Average of the learners.

Common questions

Powered by AI

Financial issues can exacerbate academic stress in blended learning as they might limit students' access to necessary technologies or reliable internet connections, leading to disconnectivity. They might also create additional stressors, such as needing to work part-time jobs, leaving less time for studies. Household responsibilities, like chores, can further encroach on the time needed for academic tasks, increasing pressure and stress. This combination of factors can lead to decreased academic performance as students struggle to manage time and resources effectively .

The long-term educational implications of stress-induced poor academic performance in blended learning include detrimental impacts on students' future career prospects and educational attainment. Persistent stress can lead to reduced motivation and engagement, resulting in lower grades and potentially leading to a "career stopper" scenario, as it hinders students' ability to retain information and develop skills necessary for higher education and professional settings. This stress-induced decline in academic performance can also affect students' self-esteem and long-term mental health, further impairing their educational and career trajectories .

Academic stress can significantly impact students' academic performance in blended learning environments. It is caused by various factors such as disconnectivity, financial issues, household chores, negative attitudes from parents, increased classwork loads, and examinations. These stressors cause students to perform poorly by reducing the number of hours spent on schoolwork, leading to inadequate preparation for exams and shoddy work outputs. When students are stressed, they struggle with initiative skills, rendering them less capable of generating new ideas or solving problems, ultimately affecting their general weighted averages and future plans .

Effective time management plays a crucial role in reducing academic stress in blended learning environments by allowing students to balance various demands and preempt stress-related outcomes. By prioritizing tasks and organizing study schedules, students can allocate sufficient time to both online and offline learning activities, reducing the urgency and anxiety associated with deadlines and examination preparations. Proficient time management results in better academic outputs, as students can engage more thoroughly with the learning material, leading to improved grades and reduced stress levels .

The blended learning model contributes to student stress by combining online and offline methodologies, which can create additional challenges compared to traditional methods. Students may face difficulties adapting to new technologies and managing the self-paced aspect of offline learning. The stress is exacerbated by the need to balance multiple learning environments and the associated technological issues like disconnectivity. This model also adds pressure from increased workloads and expectations to independently manage assignments and study for exams .

The conceptual framework for studying academic stress among students considers several variables. Academic stress is the independent variable influenced by factors like disconnectivity, financial issues, household chores, negative parental attitudes, increased class workloads, and examinations. These factors affect the dependent variable, which is the academic performance of students, measured by their general weighted averages. The study aims to link these stressors to performance outcomes to understand how stress impacts educational achievement .

Blended learning alters traditional teacher-student interactions by introducing digital communication platforms and self-paced study components, which can affect students' stress levels. The shift requires students to adapt to technological interfaces for interactions, potentially creating disconnectivity issues and reducing the immediacy of feedback compared to in-person exchanges. This change can increase stress as students navigate less direct support systems and often are required to take greater ownership of their learning processes. The implications include heightened anxiety due to the additional responsibilities and unfamiliar communication dynamics, impacting their academic engagement and stress management .

Examination pressures contribute significantly to academic stress in a blended learning environment by creating high stakes for students' grades and future academic opportunities. The challenge arises from the limited time to master a vast amount of content, the competitive nature of exams, and the added complexities in learning environments found in blended learning. This pressure to perform well can be overwhelming, leading to anxiety that diminishes students' ability to concentrate and perform effectively during exams .

Academic stress adversely affects students' initiative and problem-solving skills. When students are overwhelmed by stress, they often become mentally fatigued, reducing their ability to generate new ideas or solve simple problems. This cognitive load diminishes their capacity to think creatively or approach challenges proactively, crucial skills for succeeding in blended learning environments where self-directed study and problem-solving are vital. These deficiencies can hinder their ability to complete assignments and prepare effectively for examinations, negatively impacting academic performance .

Negative parental attitudes can significantly increase students' stress levels by creating an unsupportive and perhaps critical environment that exacerbates existing academic pressures. In a blended learning system, where students may require more home support due to the dual nature of learning contexts, negative feedback or lack of encouragement from parents can demotivate students, decrease self-esteem, and amplify stress. This heightened stress can interfere with students' ability to concentrate and effectively complete assignments, directly impacting their academic performance and overall engagement in learning .
