VLE Modeling Project Guidelines

This document outlines a VLE modeling project for a solution thermodynamics course. Students will work in groups of 5-6 to: (1) Fit experimental VLE data to several activity coefficient models and determine best fit parameter values (2) Create a P-x-y diagram comparing experimental and correlation data (3) Create a P-x-y diagram comparing experimental data to the UNIFAC model (4) Perform a thermodynamic consistency test and create a consistency diagram Students must submit work in a written report including statements of the problem, results, discussions, and conclusions with references and any attachments like worksheets, code, or references.

CHE 305: Solution Thermodynamics

1st Semester, 2020-2021

VLE Modeling Project

(A) Find the parameter values for the following models that provide the best fit to the experimental VLE data (see
below) using (A.1) GE/RT and (A.2) Barker’s method:
a. Margules
b. Van Laar
c. Wilson
d. NRTL

(B) Prepare a P-x-y diagram that compares the experimental data with the correlation obtained in (A).

(C) Prepare a P-x-y diagram that compares the experimental with the UNIFAC model.

(D) Test for the thermodynamic consistency and prepare a consistency-test diagram.
Instructions

1. This is a mini project that will be credited as quiz for the final period. You are to work as group consisting of 5-6
members.

2. To ensure that learning objectives are achieved, you should ensure that the output are all work of your group alone.
Likewise, group members should contribute an approximately equal amount of share.

3. Your deliverables will consist of the following parts:

a. The body of your submission, which contains the following:

i. Statement of the problem
ii. Your result (tables, plots, parameter values, etc.) and discussions for each question or directive
above.
iii. Conclusion
iv. References

b. The attachments, which may include:

i. Worksheets used (in Excel file)
ii. Program code (in readable text format)
iii. Copy or screenshots of references (i.e. sources used for parameters)
