Online English Teaching Challenges and Tools

The document summarizes an interview with an English teacher, Mrs. Rima, about her experiences with online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. She discusses using various media like WhatsApp, Google Classroom, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom for delivering materials and holding discussions. While distributing materials is easy, assessing student understanding is difficult without in-person interaction. Technical issues also sometimes prevent full class participation. She aims to keep students engaged by combining different media and calling on students individually.

Interview Transcripts

Day/date : 5 April 2021

Place : SMAN 24 KAB Tangerang (teacher’s room)
Time : 13.00 – 14.00
Interviewees : Mrs. Rima ( English teacher )

Interviewer : What media are used for online learning?

Interviewees : whatsapp group, Google classroom, Microsoft teams, zoom, and sometimes

telegram.

Interviewer : what is your difficulty in this online learning?

Interviewees : my difficulty is on the discussion and students understanding about the material,

every teacher can easily give the material to their students but what makes it difficult is to

discuss it with the students, are this students really understand about the material or not ?? it can

be problem if the students can not understand about the material, and the other difficulty is when

we do class on zoom meeting sometimes there are students that can not attend the class because

of bad internet network

Interviewer : how is your English teaching system right now?

Interviewees : I usually give the module and the video explanation from YouTube to the students

and one week after that we do the online class through zoom to discuss about the material, it is

all to make the students know about the material first and they can ask me when we do online

class through zoom, but I usually ask the student one by one, to make sure if they are really read

the module or not. I do this to shorten the time, because if we do the same as the offline learning
it will be not enough, and students can get bored easily. For the exercise is one week after we do

the discussion through zoom.

Interviewer : from all the media that you use, what media that effective for your class?

Interviewees : I cannot choose one, I think it would be effective if I combine all the media,

because if I only focus and use one media it will make the students bored easily.

Interviewer : are students active in the class during online learning?

Interviewees : when we do online class through google classroom, I can know who students that

active, passive or just be the loyal listener. The students that active can be count by finger, while

the rest of them are passive and just be the listener.

Interviewer : what material that you explain and discussed with your students now?

Interviewees : you should know that, during the pandemic the syllabus already changes, the

syllabus is shortened and for the tenth class is only six KD which usually nine KD for one year.

And each semester only three KD, like introduction, congratulation and compliment, and

descriptive text for semester one and for semester two there are recount, narrative, and tenses.

Interviewer : is there are any speaking material in tenth class?

Interviewees : yes there are, congratulation and compliment. I usually divided them into a group

and then they will do a video call, for example in one group there are 4 students and that 4

students will do a video call with me, they will do some dialogue based on the topic that I choose

and I will judge their pronunciation, expression and intonation.

Interviewer : based on your opinion, is interactive learning media are needed now?
Interviewees : interactive learning media are really needed, because if there are no media that

interactive the learning process will be boring.

Interviewer : do you know about the articulate storyline? or maybe you have already used it?

Interviewees : no I do not, I never heard about articulate storyline and never used it

Interviewer : is there any chance that next semester the learning process will be offline?

Interviewees : I have no idea, but if the condition gets better there is a possibility to do the offline

class but with shift system, because if we do offline learning without shift system we afraid that

there would be a new cluster.

Online learning environments differ significantly from traditional classrooms in terms of student participation. Mrs. Rima observed that while some students are active participants, most remain passive or become 'loyal listeners' during online classes. Unlike in-person classes where physical presence and interaction can encourage participation, online settings often lack personal engagement, causing a majority of students to disengage from active participation . This change in environment results in diminished immediate feedback and interaction, which are typically present in traditional settings.

To address safety and efficacy concerns post-pandemic, schools consider transitioning to offline classes using a shift system. This approach decreases student density in classrooms, allowing for better adherence to physical distancing measures, which mitigates the risk of creating new infection clusters. It attempts to balance the benefits of in-person interaction with maintaining health protocols. However, its efficacy will depend on logistical execution and continued vigilance in safety practices .

Mrs. Rima believes that integrating multiple online platforms enhances the effectiveness of online learning. She uses a combination of WhatsApp group, Google Classroom, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and occasionally Telegram. This approach prevents students from becoming bored by any single platform and allows for varied educational experiences. The use of different media helps in catering to diverse student preferences and enhances engagement by offering different forms of interaction and content delivery .

Interactive learning media play a crucial role in enhancing online education by engaging students and preventing monotony. Mrs. Rima emphasizes their importance, as they can create a dynamic learning environment that actively involves students, unlike static traditional methods. Without interactive media, online education can become dull, reducing student motivation and engagement . Thus, incorporating interactive tools is essential to keep the learning process effective and interesting.

Mrs. Rima employs strategies such as providing modules and video explanations for students to review before holding online discussions via Zoom. By assigning materials in advance, she ensures that students have a baseline understanding and can ask informed questions during discussions. She also individually checks whether students have reviewed the materials. These strategies aim to enhance engagement and understanding, though their effectiveness may depend on student self-discipline and motivation .

Using video calls for group speaking practice allows students to actively engage in language learning through real-time interaction. Mrs. Rima organizes students into small groups for video calls where they practice dialogues based on chosen topics, and she evaluates their pronunciation, expression, and intonation. This approach provides personalized feedback and simulates face-to-face communication, which is vital for mastering speaking skills. Despite challenges such as internet connectivity issues, the method effectively fosters cooperative learning and improves language competencies .

Teachers face significant challenges in ensuring student engagement and understanding during online learning. Mrs. Rima highlighted difficulties in facilitating discussions and verifying students' comprehension of the material due to the remote nature of classes. This situation poses a problem as it is crucial for students to fully grasp the material for effective learning. Additionally, technical issues such as poor internet connectivity further impede students' ability to attend and participate in online classes . These challenges can lead to ineffective learning experiences and decreased academic performance.

Mrs. Rima's current English teaching system during online learning offers several advantages, including flexible access to materials through modules and video explanations, which students can review at their own pace. She follows up with Zoom discussions to clarify doubts, ensuring an interactive component. However, the limitations include the difficulty in gauging students' understanding and engagement remotely, and the technical barriers some students face, like unreliable internet access, which may impede consistent attendance and active participation .

The lack of awareness or use of tools like Articulate Storyline suggests limited exploration into advanced digital solutions that could enhance online teaching practices. This might impede the adoption of more interactive and engaging content, which could otherwise enrich the learning experience. Without integrating newer tools capable of creating customized interactions and storytelling elements, the potential to innovate the educational delivery method is constrained, potentially affecting student motivation and learning outcomes .

During the pandemic, the English curriculum for the tenth grade experienced a reduction in scope. Previously, the syllabus included nine Key Decisions (KD) per year, which was reduced to six, covering topics like introduction, congratulation and compliment, and descriptive text in the first semester, and recount, narrative, and tenses in the second semester. This streamlining reflects adjustments to accommodate the online format and focus on key skills, though it necessitates careful prioritization of essential material .
