 Evaluation tool that measures environmental performance of

a building through its life cycle.
 Comprises of a set of criteria covering various parameters
related to design, construction and operation of a green
building.

RATING  Pre-assigned points and sets performance benchmarks and

goals that are largely quantifiable. Rating based on
SYSTEMS cumulative points obtained for all criteria .
 Mandate independent third party evaluation and evaluation
processes designed for fair evaluation.
 • Largely voluntary in nature
 Instrumental in raising awareness and popularizing green
building designs.

GREEN Building OBJECTIVE :

 Projects awarded or certified within these programs are designed to reduce
Rating and the overall impact of the built environment on human health and the natural
environment.
Certification
These four principles should be considered when evaluating a building
Systems rating or certification system:
Require an integrated design • Science-based. Results and decisions must be reproducible by others using the
process to create projects that same standard.
are environmentally • Transparent. Standards and process for awarding the certification should be
transparent and open for examination.
responsible and resource-
• Objective. Certification body should be free of conflict.

• Progressive. Standards should advance industry practices, not simply reward

renovation, and demolition.
Multi-attribute. Addressing emissions, toxicity, and overall environmental
performance in addition to water and energy.

 Adopted as a national rating system under the MNRE,

GOI, as of 1 November 2007
 Developed by TERI promoted by MNRE
 Operates under GRIHA Council
 Takes into account the provisions of the National
GRIHA Building Code(NBC) , the Energy Conservation
Building Code(ECBC) announced by BEE(Bureau of
Energy Efficiency, ministry of Power, GOI)and other IS
codes, local bye-laws, other local standards and laws.

 The performance based system has been

developed to help ‘design and evaluate’ new
GRIHA buildings(buildings that are still at the inception
stages). It also evaluates existing buildings, day
Features schools and large developments.
 A building is assessed based on its predicted
performance over its entire life cycle – inception
through operation.
 The stages of the life cycle that have been
identified for evaluation are the preconstruction,
building design and construction, and building
operation and maintenance stages.

Stages-
 PRE-CONSTRUCTION STAGE (intra- and inter-site issues)
GRIHA -  BUILDING PLANNING AND CONSTRUCTION STAGES
Features (issues of resource conservation and reduction in resource
demand, resource utilization efficiency, resource recovery
and reuse, and provisions for occupant health and well
being). The prime resources that are considered in this
section are land, water, energy, air, and green cover.
 BUILDING OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE STAGE
(issues of operation and maintenance of building systems
and processes, monitoring and recording of consumption,
and occupant health and well being, and also issues that
affect the global and local environment).

was formed by the Confederation of
Indian Industry (CII) in 2001 The council is
based out of the CII-Sohrabji Green
IGBC RATING Business Centre, Hyderabad which is
India's 1st Platinum rated green building.
The vision of the council is to enable a

 Established through Energy Conservation act

BEE STAR in 2001 with the help of ECO(energy
RATING conservation and commercialisation program)
by Ministry of Power GoI and USAID in three
stage namely ECO-1,2 and 3
 It led to establishment of BEE(Bureau of
Energy Efficiency)
 BEE thus releases ECBC(energy
conservation building code) which rates
building for its energy efficiency
 BEE also rates power consuming Appliances
such as AC, Geyser, lights etc
