FRAME
INTRODUCTION Day 1 In the mid-1600s, Robert Boyle studied the connection between the pressure (P) and
Panimula volume (V) of a confined gas held at a continuing temperature. Boyle observed that the
results of the pressure and volume are observed to be nearly constant. If the same amount of
gas at the same temperature is confined in a smaller volume, the gas molecules become
crowded and collide more frequently against the wall of the containing vessel, causing an
increase in pressure.(Hall, N. 2015)
Its mathematical expression is: P1V1=P2V2
where: P1 = initial pressure (units: atm, kPa, mmHg, cmHg, torr, Pa, psi)
V1 = initial volume (units: L, dm3, cm3)
P2 = final pressure (units: atm, kPa, mmHg, cmHg, torr, Pa, psi)
V2 = final volume (units: L, dm3, cm3)
Standard Pressure:
1 atm = 760 mmHg = 76 cmHg = 760 torr = 101,325 Pa = 14.6956 psi

Figure 1: Confined Gas in a Container at Increasing Pressure
Figure 1 shows confined gas in a container (Picture A) and what happens to the
molecules when greater pressure is applied to the confined gas (Picture B). Assuming the
temperature is held constant, how will you describe the volume and pressure of gas in
pictures A and B?
Activity 1: Check my Knowledge
Directions: Write the word TRUE if the following properties pertain to gases and
FALSE if otherwise on your notebook.
1. Highly compressible 4. Have no definite shape
2. Have definite volume 5. Have neglible mass
3. Particles move in random motion

DEVELOPMENT Day 2 Activity 2: Balloon Lung
Pagpapaunlad Enabling Competency:
Infer the relationship between volume and pressure at constant temperature
Materials: 2 balloons
a clear plastic water bottle
scissors
thumbtack or nail
Procedures:
1. Take one of the balloons and cut off the bottom part, leaving you with only the
top part that may resemble a very small swim cap.
2. Using the thumbtack or nail, poke a hole in the bottom. The hole does not need to
be too large. About 2 -3 mm in diameter would be enough.
3. Cover the bottom of the water bottle and the hole that you just poked with the
balloon you cut in step 1. Take the other balloon and put it inside the bottle. Then
fold the bottom of the balloon around the rim of the bottle so the balloon hangs
from the top.
4. Pull on the bottom balloon membrane and watch what happens to the balloon
inside the bottle.
5. Let go of the balloon membrane and observe what happens to the balloon inside
the bottle (Cheers, 2017).
(American Physical Society, 2021)
Guide Questions: Answer the following questions on your notebook.
1. What happens to the balloon inside the plastic bottle when you pulled down the bottom
balloon?
2. What happens to the pressure of a gas in a smaller balloon when you inflate it?
3. What is the relationship between volume and pressure of gases at constant temperature?
ENGAGEMENT Day 3 According to Boyle’s Law, the amount a gas will compress is proportional to the pressure
Pakikipagpalihan applied. Its mathematical expression is:
P1V1=P2V2
Sample Problem:
2.25 liters of a gas is at 740.0 mmHg pressure. What is its volume in liters at
standard pressure? (Note: 760 mmHg standard pressure-constant value).
Given: Solution:
V1= 2.25 L P1V1 = P2V2 (Cancel the same quantities)
P1= 740.0 mmHg P2 P2
P2= 760 mmHg
V2= P1V1 (This is your formula)
V2= ? (unknown) P2
V2= 740.0 mmHg (2.25 L)(Substite the given to
760 mmHg the formula)
V2= 2.19 L
Activity 3: Problem Solving
Directions: Read and analyze the problems. Show the complete solution on your notebook.
1. A balloon with a volume of 1.75 L is filled with a gas at 3 atmospheres. If the
new pressure is 0.5 atmospheres without a change in temperature, what would be
the volume of the balloon?
2. 3.20 L of a gas was at an unknown pressure. However, at standard pressure, its
volume was determined to be 6.00 L. What is the unknown pressure? (Note:
LEARNER’S ACTIVITY SHEETS (LAS)
101.325 kPa-standard pressure).
3. A scuba diver needs a diving tank to provide breathing gas while he is
underwater. How much pressure is needed for 7.00 liters of gas at 1.15
atmospheric pressure to be compressed in a 4.00 liters cylinder?
