11 Irksome-Sounding Creatures
with Enthralling Abilities!
Nature did not create all the people looking and being the same. In the same
way, we find strange creatures in animal kingdom that exceed the limits of
imagination. These 11 strange animals we gathered in this article not only
have weird looks, but they also obtain unique abilities for self-protection, food
tracing and reproduction.
1 – Santino the Chimp
Santino is a common chimp living in the zoo Furuvik in Sweden. If you are
wondering why it is the adored object of study of the scientific community, I
will explain you right away. In 2010 Santino began to throw stones to the zoo
workers. After a while, the chimp became progressively very good at it. He hid
stones inside the enclosure trying to pass unnoticed by the guards of the park
and waited patiently for people to gather. When visitors came at the zoo,
Santino hurled them the stones he had hidden!
2 – The See-through Frog
The glass frog belongs to the family of Centrolenidae and is one of the most
bizarre animals. The upper part of its body is colored green, like most frogs.
However, in the abdominal part, the skin is transparent, so that the heart,
liver and other internal organs are visible.
3 – Bats (Chiroptera)
Bats are the only mammals capable of flying. Despite common belief, bats are
not blind. They actually have small eyes and low vision, but they have
developed the ability to hunt with the help of sound! So they identify the high
frequency pulses and their echoes, thus decoding the distance and direction
of movement of the objects of the environment.
4 – Star- nose mole (Condylura cristata)
Vision is undoubtedly a basic sense of all living organisms. However, if these
eyeless animals could talk, they would certainly tell you that vision is
overestimated. They manage to survive in hostile environments only by using
their smell, touch and hearing to feed and reproduce. This amazing animal is
also a very good swimmer and can detect odors even underwater.
5 – Frilled shark
What can be more terrifying than a mixture of shark and an eel? It is called
Frilled Shark and is a living fossil. This species has not evolved at all for one
million years, and its appearances are too rare. Even a picture of it is a
shocking for the scientific world.
6 – Almiqui
Even though the Almiqui family exists in our world for 76 million years, there
are only 35 identified members, since its discovery in 1836. So they are
classified as a threatened species and scientific world eager to have a chance
to study it in more detail.
7 – Plainfin Midshipman
Τhis fish doesn’t count on its sexual appearance to attract females during
mating season. It has another special way: it sings! Of course scientists love
the fact that it can produce erotic sounds without even having vocal cords. Its
sentimental call is so strong that it sounds at a huge radius.
8 – Naked Mole-rat
Despite the ugly face of this underground resident of East Africa, naked mole-
rat has been studied by scientists for a great number of reasons. First of all,
this type of mole is aging very slowly. Compared with the average life of other
rodents, the naked mole lives much longer, almost 30 years.
9 – Goblin Shark
Goblin shark or Mitsukurina owstoni is a deep-sea species whose appearance
has changed little in 70 million years. Why is it so valuable? Because its body
has a similar structure to the prehistoric sharks and can provide answers to a
series of relentless evolutionary questions. Unfortunately as it passes its life
deep in the ocean, there is little known about the abilities of this prehistoric
living fossil.
10 – Platypus
Platypus is one of the two existing mammals that lay eggs instead of giving
birth. However it is known for its ability to locate its prey by detecting electric
fields generated by muscular contractions. Platypus hunts small invertebrates
at the bottom of rivers and lakes, and when it dives in the water it has its eyes,
ears and nostrils closed.
11 – Snakes
For man, the imaging devices which record images using infrared light are a
relatively new story. But not for snakes! In many species of the family of
reptiles, chasing blooded smooth, there is a brain structure that allows snakes
to capture infrared radiation and use it in the identification of their prey.
Most of these animals are rare or endangered species and they come from
every biodiversity, some of them are mammals, reptiles and fish. However
their struggle for survival is bizarre and remarkable and therefore they
deserve our interest.
