Aruino Based Solar Powered Automatic Hand Wash System

ABSTRACT

With the wide impact of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and the increased rate of

outbreaks and deaths from COVID-19, the reduction and prevention of these infections is a

priority target for all facilities around the world. A number of infection prevention steps,

ranging from construction measures designed into the development of facilities and

procedures for hand hygiene and personnel immunization to safety equipment must be

implemented to solve this issue.

This research aims to prevent the disease from transmitting rapidly. One way to help

reduce the spread of COVID-19 is hands-free dispensing approaches. These

solutions/innovations have dramatically increased the safety of cleaning, sanitizing and

bathroom facilities by removing the need to contact distributors, faucets and toilet handles

during use.

The whole system will help to make it simpler, more convenient and more cost-

effective to use and manage the toilet, while offering enhanced hygiene and sanitation

functionality.

INTRODUCTION

Over the last months the COVID-19 pandemic has been spreading chaos all around

the world. An epidemic outbreak occurring across the continents contributed to the

countless infections and unfortunately casualties which gave humanity a lot of worries and

fears.
Most individuals infected with COVID-19 will develop mild to moderate respiratory

failure and will recover without special care being needed. Aged individuals are most likely

to experience serious diseases, as are those with on-going medical conditions such as

cardiovascular disease, asthma, chronic respiratory disease, and cancer (World Health

Organization, 2021).

Reducing and avoiding these diseases is a challenge for all hospitals worldwide

because of the elevated incidence of infections and fatalities from COVID-19. In order to

overcome these issues, a range of infection control initiatives must be enforced, ranging

from building initiatives intended for the construction of facilities to protocols for hand

washing and staff immunization to protective devices conditions.

Hand-washing with soap and water, according to professionals, is a good defence

against viruses than most of us would know. It seems remarkably simple, but an average

person somehow isn't doing it right. In order for water taps to open the user is required to

pull the handle and wash his hands, and then shut the handle again, causing infection and

increasing the way the virus spreads through contact with the handle (Centers for Disease

Control and Preventions, 2020).

Likewise, in hotels, markets, and even at home, water wastage occurs similarly.

Because of tap users' incompetence or due to advanced tap used, visitors may not know how

to operate.

Much of the job performed using the manual process is now being automated. In

order to live a life in an automatic manner, people create new things. At the moment, the

field of robotics is continuing to grow as scientific innovations keep on improving. Robots have

become included in the everyday lives of people.

We will reduce all these issues with the use of robotics. The fusion of science,

engineering, and technology that creates devices, or robots, is robotics. It has been said over the

decades that robotics will be able to more humanely mimic human actions and control practices.

Robots have been claimed to be able to mimic human actions and control behaviours more

humanely (WhatIs, 2015).

The project is designed to take advantage of Arduino, an open-source business, project,

and user group for computer hardware and software that develops and creates single-board

microcontrollers and microcontroller kits for digital computer construction. Arduino can be used

for beginners due to its easy-to-use features and is versatile enough for experienced users

(Arduino, 2020).

With the assistance of a Passive Infrared (PIR) motion sensing module, can monitor the

valve operation by sensing any obstruction obstructing the transmitted signals. In nature,

automated taps are used as sensors of presence, not as sensors of motion. Technology detects the

"presence" of objects and not "movement." (S. Hennigan, D. Ratz, 2014)

Common questions

Powered by AI

The Arduino-based system significantly enhances hygiene and sanitation compared to traditional handwashing methods by preventing direct and indirect contact with potentially contaminated surfaces. Traditional methods often involve touching faucet handles and soap dispensers, increasing the risk of germ transmission. The contact-free mechanism in the Arduino system minimizes this risk, offering a safer alternative that aligns with hygiene protocols, especially critical during pandemics .

Automation in the Arduino-based hand wash system prevents water wastage by incorporating sensors that detect presence. Unlike manual taps, which might be left on inadvertently, automated taps ensure water flows only when needed. This efficient use of water addresses issues of user incompetence or unfamiliarity with advanced taps, which are common causes of water wastage. As a result, the system conserves water while maintaining hygiene by automating the turning on and off of taps .

Robotics, specifically Arduino technology, offers several advantages in developing an automatic hand wash system. Arduino is known for its ease of use for beginners and versatility for experienced users, facilitating its adoption in automated systems. It employs sensors to detect presence rather than motion, which allows for more precise control and operation of the hand wash system. Furthermore, this use of robotics minimizes human intervention, reducing potential virus transmission through human contact .

The Arduino-based solar-powered automatic hand wash system reduces the spread of COVID-19 by implementing hands-free dispensing approaches that eliminate the need to touch faucets, soap dispensers, and handles. By removing these contact points, the system reduces the physical contact that can lead to transmissions of the virus, thus enhancing hygiene and safety in cleaning and bathroom facilities .

Utilizing a solar-powered system in the Arduino-based hand wash system has positive environmental implications by reducing dependence on conventional energy sources, thereby decreasing carbon emissions. Solar power is renewable, aligns with sustainable practices, and provides a reliable energy source that mitigates the environmental footprint of technological innovations. This integration of renewable energy supports environmental conservation while promoting cost savings over time .

The Arduino-based solar-powered hand wash system's cost-efficiency is highlighted by its reliance on solar power, which reduces energy costs associated with traditional electric systems. The material cost analysis includes specific components like Arduino Uno and a 12V DC adapter, which are priced within reasonable limits, ensuring the system's affordability. This cost efficiency in both power consumption and component affordability makes it a viable solution for widespread implementation, especially in resource-limited settings .

The Arduino-based automatic hand wash system aligns with the growing integration of robotics in daily life by showcasing how robotic technology can perform routine tasks more efficiently and hygienically. It reflects the practical application of robotics in handling mundane yet essential processes such as hand washing, thereby reducing the need for direct human interaction and promoting a more technology-driven lifestyle .

Advancements in science and engineering contribute to developing devices like the Arduino-based hand wash system by enabling the creation of sophisticated, automated technologies that address practical challenges such as hygiene and resource conservation. These fields provide the necessary tools and concepts, such as microcontrollers and sensors, to design systems that enhance functionality and user experience, ultimately leading to innovative solutions that meet contemporary societal needs .

The Arduino platform is suitable for developing automated systems like the hand wash system due to its open-source nature, ease of use, and adaptability. Its software and hardware flexibility cater to both novice and experienced developers, facilitating the prototyping and deployment of customizable applications. The Arduino's ability to integrate seamlessly with various sensors and actuators makes it ideal for creating dynamic, automated systems that require precise control and monitoring .

The implementation challenges of the Arduino-based hand wash system include the necessity for users to have programming skills to configure the system's functionality. This requirement might limit its adoption among users without such technical expertise. Additionally, while the components are cost-efficient, setting up and troubleshooting the system may demand a deeper understanding of robotics and coding, posing a barrier for widespread usage .
