Introduction

The article ‘Investigating the Creativity of Children in Early Childhood Education


Institutions’ by Ingrid Zeynep Dere is informative and insightful because the author did a
great job doing her research for this article and the data presented was complete. The
author’s aim is to investigate the creativity of children in preschool education institutions and
to find out does preschool education affect the creativity of children. Arts in education are a
growing area of educational study and practice based on studies of how people learn
through art. It differs from art education in that it focuses on how to enhance learning
through the arts rather than on teaching art. In this writing, I will be discussing the learning
theories, basics and concepts of arts in education in relation to exploration, experiential and
expressions that involve the senses of children in learning the English language based on
the article that I have chosen.

Article Summary

This article is mainly discussing about the creativity of children in the preschool.
There are 184 children (96 boys, 88 girls) participated the study. These children enrolled in
preschool and nursery schools belong to Ministry of Education located in Ankara during the
2014-2015 academic year. The author recorded results showing that preschool curriculum
increased children’s creativity in a positive way. The author used the Torrance Creative
Thinking Test to collect the data for this article.

Learning Theory

Learning theory is a very important theory for Art in Education.

The Theory of Multiple Intelligence was introduced by a western figure, Howard


Gardner (1983). Howard Gardner argues that the child's brain and the left brain are the
subjects of learning theory. This theory includes three important components in art, namely
visual art, music art, and movement art. Hermann (1991) in “Quadrant Concept” has studied
the development of the child and left brain by stating that art helps the rational and intuitive
thinking of an individual. Researchers have found that this theory of Multiple Intelligence is
suitable for teaching and learning in the classroom. In the article stated that children who
attended preschool are more creative than those who did not received preschool education. I
believe children between the ages of three and six are like sponges. They can take in a lot
more than you would expect. Preschool lays the groundwork for both social and academic
learning. Young children are generally inquisitive and perceptive. They want to learn skills
that people around them appreciate, such as reading, toy assembly, directions or choosing
the appropriate bills or coins to pay for a purchase. Teachers can have a range of games
and activities to help children learn essential academic as well as social skills in order to
prepare them for the academic demands of school.

Basic and Concept of Art in Education

Art improves both imagination and critical thinking abilities. Students who receive an
arts-rich curriculum outperform students who receive little to no arts education on creativity
tests. According to studies, art can help develop cognitive skills in processing and analyzing
information, which can help boost trust, particularly among young people. To produce a
cultured individual by adopting the judgment of fitness, creative, innovative, inventive and
high self -esteem is the goal of Art in Education. There are three elements of Art in
Education.

The first element in art in Education is visual art. Through visual arts, children will be
able to produce students who have creative thinking, innovative thinking and so on. There
are four areas of visual arts, namely drawing, making patterns and designs, shaping and
making constructions and getting to know traditional crafts. Through this visual art as well, a
teacher can create interesting classroom atmosphere in her English class.

The art of music is also one of the elements of Art in Education. Through this art of
music, a teacher is able to create a very lively classroom atmosphere. This has caused
students to be more enthusiastic in attending the class and also following the activities held.
This art of music can be applied by teachers to be used as a teaching aid for them. We have
learned that nowadays, students are more interested in engaging learning.

Lastly is the art of movement. A teacher must be able to combine the latter element
with the two elements, namely visual art and music art. These movements can be combined
through the color as well as the rhythm played. When music is played, then there is a rhythm
that must be followed by appropriate movements. Indirectly, a teacher will be able to
stimulate the minds of students during the teaching and learning process. When these three
elements can be combined, then the classroom atmosphere will be interesting, lively and
give birth to a happy feeling of a student. They will be satisfied with the learning at that time.

An activity that a teacher can do in English classroom that satisfies these entire three
elements is by doing action song. Action songs activity includes the uses of props (visual
art), singing and dancing (rhythm and movement. The teacher is able to attract the attention
of a student to study the subject being taught at the time. Pupils will also be excited and
happy when they sing the song.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the learning theory of Multiple Intelligence is important for teaching and
learning in English Class. This is because the theory can be linked to the three elements of
Art in Education. Therefore, in teaching and learning, we must utilize this theory in order to
create a more interesting teaching and learning environment in the classroom. Nowadays, a
handful of students are more interested in fun learning. An example is learning to use
movement music and the like. Through this element of Art in Learning, then we can relate to
classroom activities.
