Pitot Static System Leak Test Procedure

This document provides instructions for performing a leak test of the pitot-static system components on an aircraft. The procedure involves connecting a test set to the pitot-static heads, pressurizing and depressurizing sections of the system, and monitoring indicators for pressure or altitude changes that would indicate leaks. Safety precautions are listed to slowly adjust pressures and not disconnect lines under pressure. The captain's and first officer's pitot and static systems are each tested separately according to specified parameters and tolerances.

TASK 34-11-00-790-815-A - Leak Test - Pitot Static System Components

EFFECTIVITY: 001999

CAUTION: SUDDEN PRESSURE CHANGES CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE PNEUMATIC INSTRUMENTS. SLOWLY
INCREASE OR DECREASE THE PRESSURE ON THE LEAK TESTER.
CAUTION: DO NOT DISCONNECT THE LINE BETWEEN THE LEAK TESTER AND PITOT/STATIC HEAD WITH THE
SYSTEM PRESSURIZED.
CAUTION: ONLY DISCONNECT THE LINE WHEN INSTRUMENTS SHOW ZERO OR FIELD ELEVATION.
CAUTION: MAKE SURE THAT THE SELECTOR VALVE IS IN THE PRESSURE OR IN THE VACUUM POSITION.
OVERHEATING CAN DAMAGE THE INTERNAL PUMP WHEN THE SELECTOR VALVE IS IN A "BETWEEN"
POSITION.
CAUTION: MAKE SURE THAT THE INTERNAL PUMP SWITCH IS IN THE OFF POSITION AND THE PRESSURE
CONTROL AND VACUUM CONTROL ARE FULLY CLOSED.
NOTE: Although the pump can operate continuously, it must only operate to hold sufficient pressure or vacuum for the
test. Any continuous operation will cause a slow and continuous heat rise which can decrease the precision of
the test.

SUBTASK 34-11-00-001-455-A00

D. Do the leak test of the captain's pitot system

Action Result

(1.) On the pitot/static system test set (tool No. 1811HR163), (a) On the captain's airspeed indicator (ASI), the pointer
slowly open the PRESSURE CONTROL valve (to increase moves slowly and stops at an airspeed of 250 kts (+ or - 3
the pressure) and close it when the tester airspeed kts).
indication shows 250 kts.
(2.) Monitor the ASI for 1 minute. (a) The airspeed value must not decrease by more than 2 kts.

SUBTASK 34-11-00-001-465-A00

E. Do the leak test of the captain's static system

Action Result

CAUTION: VERTICAL SPEED INDICATORS ARE VERY SENSITIVE. WHEN IN USE, MONITOR THE INDICATION
AND OPERATE THE VALVES CAREFULLY.
(1.) Set the captain's and test altimeter of the pitot/static
system test set (tool No. 1811HR163)to 1013,3 mb (29,92
In. Hg).
(2.) On the pitot/static system test set (tool No. 1811HR163), (a) On the captain's altimeter, the drumcounters and pointer
open the VACUUM CONTROL valve and close it when the show 5000 ft (+ or - 50 ft).
test altimeter shows 5000 ft.

NOTE: If the system shows a leakage, be prepared to open the CROSSBLEED CONTROL valve if the ASI pointer
indication decreases.
(3.) Monitor the captain's altimeter for 1 minute. (a) The indications must not decrease by more (use the
greater value) than 100 ft or 2 % of the initial altitude.
