Module 8 – Rescue and Transfer

Rescue – procedure for moving a person from an unsafe to a safer place.
Transfer – procedure for moving a person from the casualty area or incident site to a health
care or hospital facility, shelter, or evacuation center
Indications for Emergency Rescue:
• Fire or explosion
• Toxic fumes or gases
• Traffic hazard
• Drowning or risk for drowning
• Danger for electrocution
• Collapsing wall
• Exposure to extreme or harsh weather conditions
• Danger of pinning by machinery
Factors to Consider in Transfer:
• Nature and severity of injury
• Size and weight of person to be transferred
• Physical capability of the person(s) who will do the transfer
• Availability of transfer equipment
• Transfer route
Basic Principles to Observe During Transfer:
• Airway is maintained open
• Bleeding is controlled
• Bandages and splints are in place and effectively applied
• Regular checks on the condition of the person being transferred
• Person being transferred is safe and secured, in correct body position, moved as one
unit
• Person transferring is observing proper body mechanics
• Transfer method is safe, comfortable, and speedy as circumstances permit
Transfer Methods or Carry Techniques:
1. One-man carry
a. Assist to walk or human crutch
b. Carry in arms or cradle
c. Piggyback
d. Packstrap carry
e. Fireman carry
f. Fireman crawl
g. Packstrap crawl
h. Body or collar drag
i. Blanket or chair drag
2. Two-man carry
a. Assist to walk or double human crutch
b. Four-hand seat
c. Hands as litter or two-hand seat
d. Carry by extremities
e. Front-back carry
3. Three-man carry
a. Bearers on one side
b. Hammock carry (bearers on both sides)
4. Blanket or chair lift
5. Use of stretcher or backboard
