Low Foaming
For HI&I Cleaning
Foam is an important property of surfactants in household applications, where foam signals
cleaning to the user. In contrast, foam is often disruptive to the cleaning process for industrial and
institutional (I&I) applications. Stable foam inhibits mechanical action so that the cleaning solution
does not come into contact with the surface being cleaned, diminishing cleaning efficiency. This
sales tool highlights the top 15 Stepan surfactants that generate little to no foam. Low foam is
defined as initial foam volume that is 30 mm or less via the High Shear Foam Test.

High Shear Foam Test Method: ASTM D3519-88 analyzed at 25°C.
Protein soil solutions generate foam. Surfactants that exhibited ~10mm or less foam were tested again at 60°C with 0.2% protein
soil to evaluate their ability to suppress foam generated from the soil.
