Impact of Self-Learning Kits on Grade 9 Chemistry

This document outlines an action research proposal that will examine the effects of self-learning kits on the academic performance of Grade 9 learners in quantum mechanical models of atoms. Specifically, it will assess the validity of a teacher-made self-learning kit, compare student pre-test and post-test results, and determine if there is a significant difference between the two test results. The research will be conducted at Solotsolot National High School during the second grading period of the 2020-2021 school year. It is focused on evaluating a teacher-made self-learning kit on quantum mechanical models of atoms for Grade 9 students.

INTRODUCTION
As Mark Twain once remarked, “The Best Education Happens outside the
Classroom” which means that self-learning that takes place outside the formal
channels can be both informative as well as educational. To explain, self-learning
ensures that learners learn outside the formal systems thereby giving them more
flexibility and freedom to explore new avenues of learning. It is common knowledge that
education is the key to become productive citizens in our country so that most, if not all,
of the parents are working hard to earn money just to sustain the needs of their
children. But the present education system has encountered challenges in delivering
basic education caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, where holding of classes in
schools is compromised due to prohibitions following the implementation of General
Health and Safety Protocols such as convergence and face-to-face contact. The
education system is greatly affected by the COVID-19 outbreak. But despite this, the
Department of Education (DepEd) is still adamant to continue delivering basic education
to all. Part of our role as teachers is developing our students’ love for learning. We
encourage our students to be learners who find joy in exploring and discovering,
regardless of where they may be. Now is the perfect time to tap in to your students’
curiosity about the world, and the inevitable boredom that is sure to ensue during their
isolation. One of the Teaching-Learning modality under the new normal is the modular
learning or the using of what we call SLK (Self Learning Kit).
A learning module is otherwise known as a self-learning kit (SLK). It consists of
systematic sequenced materials for learning. Self-Learning Modules may prove to be a
boon for students due to their enriched features. They perform the role of an efficient
teacher. Students become independent thinkers and learn to accept responsibility. Self-
learning modules give the opportunity to develop a good work ethic. In other words, self-
learning is neither location constrained nor time-bound, and all that is needed is an
access to a computer and a reliable internet connection to engage in self-learning.
Indeed, the fact that self-learning can take place from the comfort of anywhere as well
as the luxury of any time means that it is quite valuable for those who are location or
time constrained.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to find out the effectiveness of the teacher-made self-learning kit
in the academic performance of the Grade 9 learners in Chemistry.
Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:
1. What is the validity of the self- learning kit to be used by the learners in terms of
the following factors:
a. Intellectual Property Rights Compliance;
b. Learning Competencies;
c. Instructional Design and Organization;
d. Instructional Quality;
e. Assessment; and
f. Readability?

2. What is the result of the Pre-test of the learners?

3. What is the result of the Post-test of the learners?
4. Is there a significant difference between the Pre-test and the Post-test?

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This research will be conducted at Solotsolot National High School, 2 nd grading
period, School Year, 2020-2021. The instrument of the study is the Teacher-made Self-
learning kits in Grade 9 specifically about Quantum mechanical model of atom.
It is delimited to the following: The construction of the Self-learning kits, testing if
the constructed tool is effective in the understanding of students in quantum mechanical
model of atom through pre-test and post-test.

Common questions

The document assesses instructional quality based on how well the self-learning kits adhere to instructional design principles and organization. These aspects are evaluated alongside other validity factors such as learning competencies, assessment mechanisms, and readability to ensure the effectiveness of the kits .

The study suggests that self-learning kits are valuable during remote learning periods as they provide a structured yet flexible learning environment. They ensure continuity of education despite physical classroom constraints, support independent learning, and help students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills outside the traditional classroom setting .

The expected outcomes of using self-learning kits are to develop a love for learning among students by encouraging them to explore and discover joyfully at their own pace. This modality aims to tap into students' curiosity, especially during periods of isolation, thereby reducing boredom and enhancing their overall engagement with the subject matter .

The primary factors being evaluated for the validity of a self-learning kit are compliance with Intellectual Property Rights, Learning Competencies, Instructional Design and Organization, Instructional Quality, Assessment, and Readability .

Digital access is crucial for the success of self-learning kits as it allows learning to occur without the constraints of location or time. Reliable internet access and access to a computer are essential components that enable students to engage with self-learning kits effectively .

The academic content focus of the study is the Quantum Mechanical Model of Atom for Grade 9 learners at Solotsolot National High School during the 2nd grading period of the School Year 2020-2021 .

Self-learning kits offer alternatives to the traditional classroom setting by allowing learning to occur outside formal channels, thus providing flexibility and independence. They potentially transform the learning environment by shifting from a teacher-centered model to one that encourages students to become independent thinkers, develop responsibility, and engage in learning at their own pace .

The study employs a pre-test and post-test methodology to measure the effectiveness of self-learning kits. Students' academic performance in the Quantum Mechanical Model of Atom topic is assessed using these tests to identify any significant differences after the implementation of the self-learning kits .

The document highlights the challenge of conducting face-to-face classes due to prohibitions from General Health and Safety Protocols, which include avoidance of convergence. This disruption necessitated the exploration of alternative teaching modalities like self-learning kits to continue the delivery of education .

The study defines self-learning kits as tools that foster independent learning by enabling students to learn outside formal education systems, providing flexibility to explore new knowledge at their own pace. Consequently, students develop into independent thinkers, take responsibility for their learning, and cultivate a good work ethic .
