XCU Erase and Firmware Installation Guide
XCU Erase and Firmware Installation Guide
1. BEFORE YOU START make sure that you have all of the following:
i) The backup floppy of the unit (the one you sent me). It is a good idea to make a copy
of the floppy and use the copy instead of the original one.
ii) The “Erase_Floppy” that I will send you (this is a floppy that erases totally the
contents of the XCU – formats the hard disk of the XCU).
iii) One brand-new IC-chip of the type DS1230Y from Dallas Semiconductors. You can
buy one on-line at [Link] (or anywhere else you like). The price at
[Link] is about US$15 per piece.
XCS Terminator
If you don’t have original Siemens terminators (you may have some on your XCU),
you will have to make them yourself as follows:
You buy four DB9male connectors and four 120ohm resistors of ¼W (one quarter
watts). You solder one resistor at each connector between pins 1 and 6. You insulate
the resistor (so that it does not make any contact with the surrounding pins…) and
you close the covers of the connectors. The terminators (open) should look like this:
System SW CD screenshot
(The page you see here is from a different version CD than yours, so version
numbers will be different in your case, but the links should be similar with these).
You use the link that I have marked on the photo, with the name:
“Iconos R200 SCU (Iconos_200) inclusive XCU (XCU_HE) on one floppy”.
When you click on the link, the floppy creation procedure will start, creating the
floppy with the XCU firmware. Label this floppy as “XCU_Firmware”. It will be
needed to load the XCU firmware after the Erase of the XCU.
vi) One Service-PC (laptop or desktop-PC) which will be used for service on the
generator with the service software installed. The PC (or laptop) must have
operating system not later than Windows 98SE (best case…), a floppy drive, a CD
drive and a serial port (COM1) available.
You must install the “XCS-Service software” from the system CD using the
corresponding link of the installation page.
You also need a null-modem DB9female DB9female cable, to connect the
service-PC with the XCU. The pinout of such a cable is the following:
vii) One computer power supply cable that can be connected to a switched outlet. This
will be used to connect the XCU unit of the generator directly to the power supply
(through a switch), so that it will be possible to power-on the XCU without switching
on the complete generator.
Pay attention to the distances “Ref.*1” and “Ref.*2”. These have to be precise. In
the distance measurement, you do not take into account the safety-stop flap that is
mounted at the head-end of the table. You measure the distances (internal) to the
table frame. The column should be vertical (0 degrees - perpendicular to the table
top).
You must position the table at this position and leave it there all the time that you
will go through the rest of the procedure. This position is required to make the
adjustment of the table, when you finish the XCU erase procedure.
If you want to be 100% sure (better safe than sorry…) that the column and spotfilm
device are at the correct position, there are two ways to verify it. You can measure
the reference voltages of the position potentiometers R20 (column position) and R7
(spotfilm device position). You can measure the voltages directly on the
potentiometers (location is shown at the above diagram – you have to open the
feet-side metal cover of the table), between pins 1 and 2 of each potentiometer. The
voltage for both potentiometers should be (exactly) 2.1V. If it is not, then either the
positioning is not correct, or the potentiometers are not well adjusted(!).
Alternatively, you can measure the voltages of the two potentiometers, on the
board A4.D41 (table base – electronics box) at the test points: XP4 – XP12 (voltage
of R20) and XP4 – XP10 (voltage of R7).
Make sure that both these voltages are 2.1V before proceeding any further!
6. Switch off the unit, leaving the table at the reference position mentioned above
(step 5). Disconnect all cables from the front panel of D320 board (XCU) marking
their positions. Remove D320 board from the XCU. Take care, when removing the
board because some (older) versions of XCU’s have a single white cable connecting
the D320 board with the XCU motherboard. I do not think that your XCU is going to
have such a cable (judging by the model year of your unit), but it is always good to
be aware…
After you remove the D320 board, find on the board the DS1230Y chip, remove the
original chip and replace it with the brand-new chip that you have purchased.
Keep the board outside of the XCU for now.
7. At this point, you have to use the external power supply cable, connected directly at
the XCU power supply. The cable you will use must have an on-off switch to switch
the power supply to the XCU on and off. This way you do not have to switch on the
entire generator to power-on the XCU.
8. Insert the “Erase Floppy” in the XCU floppy drive and power-on the XCU. The XCU is
going to boot (from floppy). After a while, a siren sound will be heard for 20-30
seconds and after that, the XCU will begin the hard disk formatting. At the end of the
formatting (total erase) procedure, you will hear a three-tone sound, that indicates
that the procedure is finished. Wait a few moments, and if you see no further
activity, eject floppy disk and power-off XCU.
9. Now, insert the “SCU-XCU firmware floppy” that you created from the System-CD.
Power-on the XCU and follow the exact same procedure with the previous step
(siren sound – formatting disks and software installation on hard disks – three-tone
sound at the end). After the final sound is heard, wait a few moments like in the
previous step and then power-off the XCU.
10. Re-insert the D320 board to the XCU (as it was originally), but do not connect any
cables to the top four connectors ([Link] – XCS.X3.S – [Link] – XCS.X4.S).
Instead of the respective cables, install four XCS terminators (see step 1 – iv) at
these connectors. Connect all other cables at the D320 front panel as they were
originally.
11. Power-on the XCU (still from the external power supply switch). The XCU should
boot-up and after a while various codes will begin flashing at the D320 LED display
(you may see codes like F8 – F9 – FA – 31 – 61 etc.). Don’t worry about these codes!
12. Connect the Service-PC to the XCU and start the XCS-Service-sw. Give username and
password and at next window press the button “Connect”.
After you “connect”, go to “System” “ID-Codes”. You should normally have
empty fields (except the Host-ID field).
Fill the data for Serial-No and Product-ID that you have noted down at step 3.
After completing the data EXACTLY AS THEY WERE WRITTEN BEFORE press “Put To
Unit” button.
Exit the ID-Codes window and then exit the service-sw.
13. Re-start the XCS-Service-sw and press button “Login” this time. You will login to the
service mode, if everything was done correctly. You will probably receive a message,
saying that the system is not configured yet. Press “OK” to the message.
14. Go to menu “Data” “Restore from Disk”.
When the sw asks you, insert the backup floppy (or better a copy of it) in the drive
and start the restore procedure.
After the restore is complete, remove the backup floppy and exit the service-sw.
Then switch-off the XCU.
15. If everything is done fine so far, at this point the XCU is totally erased and re-
configured. The variable password is re-set to the value “Test Test Test Test Test”
that never expires!
16. You can now re-connect the power supply of the XCU to the original power cable in
the generator and re-connect the original cables at the top four connectors (XCS.X3
and XCS.X4). When all cables are in the initial positions, switch-on the unit.
17. The unit should switch-on normally and probably give you an error (normally is the
error with number 129/032) at the end of the power-on initialization. The error has
to do with the missing adjustment data of the Iconos table. The only thing left to do
now, is the Iconos adjustment (the table is still at the reference position!).
18. Start the XCS-Service-sw at the Service-PC and use “Login” button.
Go to menu “Components” “Iconos”. The service-sw for Iconos table is started.
19. Go to menu “Adjustments” “Calibrations” “Spotfilm Device and Column
Longitudinal Drive”. In there you will find the list of the following adjustments:
- Column longitudinal drive: Potentiometer adjustment
- Spotfilm Device longitudinal drive: Potentiometer adjustment
- Spotfilm Device and column longitudinal drive: Linearity correction
You have to perform all three adjustments in the sequence they are listed.
To start each adjustment you select it from the list and press the “Execute” button.
20. First execute “Column Potentiometer Adjustment”. If the column is at the correct
reference position (2.1V voltage at R20 potentiometer) then you will hear an
acoustic signal (continuous) which indicates that the voltage is in-tolerance. You click
“OK” and then you receive a window showing the old offset value and the new
offset value of the adjustment. You press “OK” to this window as well to finish the
adjustment.
21. Next you execute the “Spotfilm Device Longitudinal Potentiometer Adjustment”. It is
the same procedure like before (for R7 potentiometer). You hear the acoustic signal
and you click “OK”. Then you see the old – new value window and you press “OK”
again.
22. Finally, make sure that there are no objects on the table that could obstruct the
movement of the column and spotfilm device (in the whole movement range from
head-end to feet-end). Then execute the last adjustment “Linearity Correction”.
When this adjustment is started, you must press one of the two table-top transverse
movement (left-right arrow buttons) on the spotfilm device touch panel. When you
press one of the buttons (once) the column and the spotfilm device start moving (be
careful!) towards the head-end of the table. The spotfilm device and column drive
move through the entire movement range from the head to the feet in approx. 10
cm steps. While this is taking place, an acoustical signal sounds until the movement
is concluded. After the adjustment routine has been successfully completed, the
data are saved in the Iconos table processor memory.
To permanently store the adjustment data to the XCU, for all the three adjustments,
you have to exit the service-sw completely, power-off the unit, wait a while and
then power-on the unit again.
23. If everything is done properly, you now have a fully working system (no errors or
anything…).
A small note here: The service password to enter the Fluorospot Compact Service
mode is (always) the last 6 digits of the variable password. After the XCU erase
procedure, this password will be “STTEST”. However, the first time you login into
Fluorospot service mode, it is possible that you will need the last 6 digits of the
PREVIOUS variable password. This is why it is a good idea to have the previous
variable password noted down (see step 4)!
END OF WORK…
