Understanding Sentence Fragments

Sentence fragments are incomplete sentences that are only part of a full sentence. Examples of fragments include "Before the test began" and "As soon as you get home" because they are dependent clauses that do not express a complete thought on their own. Sentence errors: Fragments

The word fragment means a part of


something. A sentence fragment is
only part of a sentence or half of a
sentence. [Link]
Examples: of sentence fragments:
Fragment: Before the test began.
Fragment: As soon as you get home.
they are fragment because they are dependent
clauses.
To fix this kind of fragment, add an independent
clause to it.

Summary: Three types of sentences.
A simple sentence has one dependent clause. -
e.g.: It was a sunny day. -
Raise your hand to ask a question. -
A compound sentence has two or more -
independent clauses joined by a comma and
coordinating conjunction.
It was a sunny day, so we went to the beach. -

A complex sentence has one independent
clause and one or more dependent clause. A
comma is needed when a dependent clause
comes before an independent clause.
Examples:
While the meat is cooking, prepare the sauce.
Prepare the sauce while the meat is cooking.
