installation on cables. Heat shrinkable components are based on polymeric
materials and are to be supplied in an expanded state. Heating of these
components to a temperature generally above 120°C would activate their
elastic memory and cause these components to recover or shrink down on
a substrate within a specific application range.

2. SYSTEM DATA:
The distribution system in which the cables along with the joints and
terminations are expected to perform reliably over a period of 30-35 years,
is a three phase, 3-wire System operating at 6.6kV with solidly

Common questions

Heat shrinkable cable terminations for outdoor applications use non-tracking, erosion, and weather-resistant tubing made with ceramic-based highly non-linear stress control systems. These stress control systems ensure even distribution of the electrical field along the termination, preventing electrical overstressing by maintaining stress levels below 1.5 kV/mm . The tubing and molded components are tested for thermal endurance, tracking and erosion resistance, and weather resistance to ensure a lifespan of 30-40 years, even under impulse voltages up to 170kV. Adhesive mastics used are similarly non-tracking and weather-resistant to securely seal the connections .

The specification ensures stress levels remain within safe limits in both indoor and outdoor terminations through the use of a ceramic-based, highly non-linear stress control system integrated with non-tracking heat shrinkable tubing. This system disperses the electrical field along the termination, maintaining the stress level at or below 1.5 kV/mm, as proven by electrical field calculations that include impulse voltages up to 170kV . Additionally, the requirement for stress control systems to be erosion and weather-resistant ensures they can withstand environmental stress and maintain electrical integrity for 30-40 years . The materials must pass performance specifications such as IS 13573-2010, confirming their effectiveness under specified conditions .

Inspection and testing protocols enforce quality and compliance by requiring all materials for cable joints to undergo rigorous testing during manufacturing and prior to dispatch. Tests ensure compliance with standards outlined in relevant specifications like IS 13573-2010 and IEC 61238 for termination and joint performance. These protocols include assessing parameters such as volume resistivity, permittivity, and thermal ageing effects to verify long-term performance under service conditions . The presence of an inspector during testing and issuance of certification guarantees that materials meet all stipulated criteria before market delivery . Additionally, accelerated laboratory tests and long-term field usage proofs confirm material properties are retained within permissible limits under varying temperatures and ageing effects, further ensuring compliance with industry standards .

Heat shrinkable cable termination and joint kits are designed to meet stringent performance and safety standards for 6.6kV XLPE insulated power cables by incorporating materials with properties that withstand extreme environmental conditions. These kits use polymeric materials that shrink upon heating above 120°C, providing a tight seal around cable connections to prevent the ingress of moisture and contaminants, thus maintaining electrical integrity . They are also designed to handle ambient temperatures ranging from -5°C to 50°C, installation heights up to 1800m, and high humidity levels up to 95% in polluted and coastal environments . The kits must also meet the requirements of thorough inspection, testing, and certification including thermal endurance, tracking, and erosion resistance tests, ensuring a reliable service life of 30-35 years .

Justifications for selecting insulation and screening materials in heat shrinkable cable joints include their ability to provide effective electrical insulation and uniform stress distribution over connection points. The selection is supported by detailed explanations and evidence submitted by the tenderer, such as material-specific volume resistivity and permittivity data, demonstrating they meet precise AC impedance requirements amidst the thermal ageing and environmental conditions . The dual layer tubing, featuring an insulating elastomeric layer and a conductive outer layer, must provide adequate thickness to ensure effective electrical insulation and screening . The materials must also comply with type test performance standards outlined in IEC 61238 and IS 13573-2010 .

Heat shrinkable cable kits include key components such as non-tracking heat shrinkable tubing, ceramic-based stress control systems, and mechanical shear bolt type lugs and ferrules. These components ensure reliability and safety by maintaining effective electrical field distribution, preventing overstressing of materials, and providing corrosion-resistant, high-conductivity connections . Each kit comes with illustrated installation instructions and a checklist, facilitating proper assembly and reducing errors during installation. The individual components are separately packed in sealed polyethylene wrapping, preventing moisture ingress and mechanical damage, which is crucial for long-term reliability .

Lugs and ferrules included in cable joint kits are designed to ensure reliable mechanical and electrical connections through the use of shear bolt technology, where bolts shear off at the correct torque for optimal conductivity and mechanical stability . They are made from corrosion-resistant, high strength, high conductivity aluminum alloy, and are tin-plated for additional corrosion resistance. Performance specifications such as conformity to IEC 61238 standards ensure they meet necessary mechanical and compressive requirements. The design includes elements necessary for high durability and effective current transmission, with type test certificates required to confirm performance under operational conditions .

The thermal endurance and tracking resistance of components in heat shrinkable cable systems are evaluated using standardized tests such as ASTM D2303 for tracking and erosion resistance. Thermal endurance is assessed by subjecting the materials to prolonged exposure at elevated temperatures matching operational conditions . Tracking resistance involves exposing the components to a simulated environmental stress, measuring their ability to resist erosion and non-tracking under high voltage conditions. Additionally, weather resistance tests like using an Atlas Weather O meter are conducted to predict the material’s performance over an expected lifespan of 30-40 years in outdoor applications . These criteria ensure the materials can withstand extreme environmental conditions without degradation of their electrical properties.

Packaging and marking protocols for heat shrinkable cable kits are designed to ensure proper handling, storage, and installation by providing comprehensive labeling and protection against environmental conditions. Each kit is packed to prevent moisture, dust ingress, and mechanical damage, while the external packaging is marked with essential information such as the manufacturer’s name, batch number, and appropriate kit specifications . Checklists and illustrated instructions are included to facilitate step-by-step installation, minimizing the risk of errors. Each component is individually sealed and labeled with detailed part information, ensuring the correct components are used and simplifying the installation process .

Stress control in heat shrinkable cable joint systems is achieved through a combination of high-permittivity void filling mastics and heat shrinkable stress control tubing with specific impedance properties. These components are engineered to stabilize electrical performance by maintaining constant AC impedance despite thermal changes and ageing effects on the conductor material . The tubing's ability to resist temperature-induced changes in impedance is verified by the submission of technical documentation showing the effects of temperature and ageing on material performance, which ensures the consistent operation and longevity of the system . Furthermore, the integration of specific volume resistivity and permittivity in these materials aids in maintaining effective stress relief over time .
