NEEDS ANALYSIS
BACKGROUND AND RATIONALE

ACADEMIC writing has always had a central role in the academic’s arena globally. Schools and educators will
share knowledge and experience and train students to write academically, as the writing skills will benefit them later.
Academic writing serves as a tool of communication that conveys acquired knowledge in a specific field of study. Writing
academically will help students analyze, convey understanding, think critically and focus on technique and style.

In higher institutions of learning, it can be difficult for students to explain what they know, especially on complex
subjects, if they are poor in academic writing. Writing and essays will allow students to explain what they understand and
know by using the correct phrases and styles and make the information understood by others.

We should not write a one-sided paper that leaves no room for argument. Academic writing needs students to
look at ideas and research from a different perspective. Students have to learn to analyze theories from a number of
different viewpoints and then write based on what they understand. To think critically and objectively is a useful skill for
people to learn early on in life, as the ability to look at things objectively is something that will benefit them in real life.

However, we can’t deny the fact that not all of the students in Senior High School can already fully express
themselves through academic writing. It has been observed by many teachers in SHS department that there are still
learners who write a poor thesis statement, had lack of evidence, use confusing words or language when writing an
introduction, unaware of the target audience, lack of relevant references, unclear or weak analysis, had an awkward
structure, use commas excessively, forgetting the conclusion, and fear of failure. With these things, learners can’t enjoy
writing. These things result to ineffective paragraph development, and in wider scenario will fail them write effectively
when they are in higher institutions of learning. To help the learners who were having this kind of problems a certain
needs analysis should be conducted to determine the skills to be developed.

Some other researchers such as Taillefer, (2007) and Cowling, (2007) empirical evidence shows that the
success of teaching and learning process in ESP depends much on needs analysis. It is clear thus that needs analysis
can help learners adapt to the new learning system when their teachers recognize their needs of the learning process
(Carkin, 2005; Chamot, 2007). One obvious advantage of needs analysis is that, by identifying them learners in general,
needs analysis will identify the weaknesses and strengths of the skills that they may use in potential business or academic
contexts. Therefore, the conduct of this needs analysis comes to add to the bulk of analysis done. It can be considered a
pragmatic and objective attempt to for the researcher to identify the best methods of teaching that are truly relevant to the
learners.
After the conduct of this mentioned needs analysis, it is expected to design a syllabus and learning materials to
enhance the students’ academic performance by strengthening students’ abilities to write and communicate in various
academic and social context. The result of the needs analysis, will be a great opportunity to teach necessary skills in

writing paragraph believing that this will help the learners as they are all taking Academic subjects in Senior High School.
It will also help the learners improve their communication skill.

TARGET LEARNERS

The target learners who will be assessed are the students who are taking General Academic Strand at
Matuyatuya National High School. To be specific they are the Grade 11, consists of 17 males and 27 females under the
supervision of Mrs Ma. Manilyn R. Pielago.

RESULT AND DISCUSSION

This particular parts presents and discusses the result of needs analysis conducted among Grade 11 GAS of
Matuyatuya National High School. To know the needs of the learners, the teacher asked the learners to compose a
position paper with the title, “Do you think our government’s economy can sustain our country’s needs during this
uncertain times of pandemic?”. The students’ outputs were collected online and carefully analyzed. The teacher’s analysis
will focus on the structure of this specific academic text, paragraph development as well as the language use in writing.

The distribution of the of learners based on the criteria set in analyzing the position paper.

The table above explains the number of learners who met the standards per category. It shows which category
do the students met the standards based on their work. In terms of Content & Development, the total number of learners
who were below standards is 21 or 47.72%, which means that those learners had No clear position taken; reasons
undeveloped; no supporting facts used; while 5 or 11.36% of the learners met the standards. For Organization &
Structure, the highest number of learners were under Approaching Standards were 20 or 45.45% of the learners while

there was 1 or 2.27% was above standards. For the Format, 23 or 52.27% of the learners were under approaching
standards while 2 or 4.54% of the learners were at above standards. Lastly, there were 25 or 56.81% of the learners were
below the standards while there were 1 or 2.27% of the leaners was at the above standards.

Based on the data presented above, two of the categories were under below standards which are the Content &
Development and Grammar, Punctuation & Spelling while the other two categories were under approaching standards the
Organization & Structure and Format which means that the learners need more attention to these categories. It shows that
the learners need more knowledge in developing their skill in academic writing particularly position paper and the like.
