Rhetorical Strategies for Arts Advocacy

The student chose three genres - a cartoon, pamphlet, and petition - to bring attention to the issue of defunding arts programs in schools. Rhetorical Rationale

My first genre is a cartoon. I decided to go with a cartoon in order to appeal to the way

that people already view arts programs such a music. A majority of society does not take the arts

seriously which is why many school districts want to defund them. In order to play on that way

of thinking, I thought it was be appropriate to make a cartoon and turn it into a joke in order to

get people to pay attention to it. It may seem a little bit funny on the outside but when you take a

deeper look, it can be a much more serious issue. It has been proven that the arts can help student

perform better in their general education cores.

For a similar reason, another one of my genres is a pamphlet. Pamphlets are meant to

draw the audience in with pictures and other aesthetics to keep them interested. I chose to present

information through a pamphlet because a regular audience would not be too interested in

reading about defunding of arts programs. In order to get people interested in issues that arts

programs face, they kind of have to be tricked into it. There are some topics that can be written

down on a blank piece of paper and audiences would enjoy it. This is not the case with issues

that are deemed less important, such as arts programs’ funding. In order to keep an audience

engaged with being informed about the struggles that art programs endure, gimmicks, pretty

colors and other effect that are pleasing to the eye need to be used to keep their attention.
For my last genre, I decided to go with a petition. As with any other petition, I was

looking to play on the audience’s emotion in order to get them to sympathize with arts programs.

Just like with my other two genres, I do not feel that there is any other way to bring attention to

this issue. It is very easy for arts programs’ issues to get pushed aside and ignored because there

are probably more people not involved in the arts than those who are. A way to relate this topic

to other types of people that would not normally pay attention is through sports. People would

understand how arts programs feel when they are defunded if I were to tell them to imagine if

sports programs were to get defunded. Granted, this would probably never happen because this

country seems to be built on sports, but that is the closest thing that can be related to. Imagine

how much harder it would be to continue sports programs and keep students interested if school

districts were to cut their funding. It would be very difficult to practice with old equipment, or no

equipment at all. How would they be able to pay for transportation to and from games that are in

other counties and maybe even states. Arts programs may not be as popular as sports programs

but the students and faculty would feel the same pain if they were to be defunded.
