This Guide to Manage Educational Research Project (EED521/06) is developed to

assist students and Project Supervisors in managing the education research project
paper.

This Guide includes important information relating to the requirements, conduct and
responsibilities in successfully executing relevant research and documenting its
execution in the Education Research Project Paper. It should be thoroughly read by
all students and Project Supervisors since it provides important information and
guidelines on the management of the Research Project Course.

Where necessary, additional information and educational resources for students and
Project Supervisors will be made available on the University’s Learning Management
System (LMS). In this regard, all students and Project Supervisors are required to
constantly visit the LMS for updates on this course.

iii
1.0 Introduction

The EED521/06 Educational Research Project is a capstone course of the [Link]

programme and is essentially an independent study to be undertaken by students on
an educational issue related to their specialisation. This is a 6 credit course spanning
2 + 6 months to allow enough time to complete the education research project.
Students are given 2 months in the preceding semester to register for the project
course and start preparing the project proposal so that they are able to immediately
proceed to implement the project activities and collect data at the start of course
semester.

As the Project Course carries 6 credits, a workload of 240 hours is expected to be

undertaken by students for this course. To ensure that students are able to
successfully complete the project paper, they are required to fulfill the following
prerequisites prior to registering for EED521/06 Educational Research Project:

 must have passed (obtained Grade A, B or C) EED501/05 Research in

Education, and
 must have passed (obtained Grade A, B or C) at least 4 courses which must
consist of a combination of Core and Specialisation courses.

Students will have to select suitable Project Supervisors who have the necessary
knowledge and competency to guide the students and facilitate the completion of the
project paper. A suitable topic (and area of research) will be chosen based on mutual
agreement between the students and Project Supervisors. Students are expected to
work closely with their Project Supervisors during the duration of preparing and
completing the project paper.

The aim of the Project Supervisory system is to ensure that students are given
effective and regular academic and supervisory support on a personal basis in order
for them to complete their Project Course with Wawasan Open University (WOU)
successfully.

1
2.0 Objective of the Education
Research Project Paper

The main objective of the Project Course is to help the students develop and
demonstrate the ability to apply multidisciplinary or inter-disciplinary concepts, tools
and techniques which they have acquired during the duration of their studies to
produce a project paper that addresses critical issues in their area of specialisation
substantiated with relevant and valid research processes.

3.0 Prerequisites

Students will be allowed to enrol in the Project Course provided they have fulfilled the
following prerequisites at the point of registration:

i. must have passed (obtained Grade A, B or C) EED501/05 Research in

Education, and
ii. must have passed (obtained Grade A, B or C) at least 4 courses which
must consist of a combination of Core and Specialisation courses.

Observance of these prerequisites is important to ensure that the students would

have the required knowledge and competency to do an independent research and
produce a valid and reliable research report.

2
4.0 General Framework of Project
Supervision

The Project Supervisor is responsible for supervising and providing relevant advice
and guidance to the student in executing the research and subsequently completing
the Education Research Project Paper.

The Project Supervisor is the student’s primary point of contact, and will be appointed
by the University. The appointment of the supervisor will be coordinated by the
Project Coordinator.

Students will select suitable Project Supervisors who have the necessary knowledge
and competency, and contact the Project Supervisors to obtain their consent.
Students are advised to introduce themselves and to make arrangement to have an
initial discussion about the proposed topic. The supervisors have to ensure the
chosen topic of research is appropriate to the specialisation of the students.
Subsequent discussions with the supervisors and peers could be carried out via
various channels, such the Learning Management System (LMS), whatsapp, emails,
etc.

Both the students and the Project Supervisors are strongly advised to maintain
regular contact with the Project Coordinator on matters related to the Project Course.
Kindly access the Learning Management System (LMS) for the contact details of the
