METHODOLOGY

This chapter includes the research design, hypotheses, source of data, data gathering

procedure, research instrument and data analysis.

Research Design

The method that will be used in the study will be descriptive method. This type of

method will gather the needed information and with the current status of the phenomena to

describe what exists with respect to variables or conditions in a situation. This will also be used

for the purpose of describing the attributes for a larger population.

Source of Data

The study will be conducted among Grade 7 students of Cavite National High School at

Chief E. Martin St., Caridad, Cavite City. The participants will be chosen utilizing stratified

random sampling by choosing 5 males and 5 females for the total of 10 participants each section.

The participants are chosen because among other year level, they are more prone in committing

errors in the usage of prepositions.

Research Instrument

In gathering data, the researchers will use standardized questionnaire. The cloze test

questionnaire is the researchers’ way to ask the participants and collect their answer at the same

time. The first part of the questionnaire contains the demographic profile of the participants. The
second part of the questionnaire contains sentences focusing on the preposition of time, place,

and direction.

Aside from standardized questionnaire, the researchers will also conduct an interview to

the students on the difficulties encountered in answering preposition of time, place and direction.

Lastly, the researchers will also conduct an interview for teachers to ask how he approaches and

teaches preposition to his students.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers will give a request letter to the school principal to ask permission to

conduct the study in the school. Upon the approval of the school principal, the researchers

coordinated with the advisers of the 35 sections of the first year level of Cavite National High

School. The researchers will proceed to data gathering by using the standardized cloze test

questionnaire. The participants will be given 30 minutes to fill it out. The test consisted of two

parts, namely the demographic profile which is developed to collect the information from the

participants related to the variables and the prepositional test for the performance of the

participants in the use of prepositions of place, time and direction. Stratified random sampling

method will be using in the study. In stratified random sampling, the researchers divide the

population into separate groups, called strata. Then, a probability sample will be conducted from

each group. The researchers will gather data through the administered questionnaires in order to

test the hypothesis or answer question regarding the subject of the study.

Data Analysis
The following formula will be use in this study:

Frequency, together with percentage, will be used to determine the distribution of the

participants.

Percentage is an indicator for determining which items in a group were favored most and

which items in a group were favored least by the participants. This was used in the study to

describe the profile of the participants

Formula:

f
%= n x 100

Where:

% = percentage

f = frequency

n = sample population

Mean is the average numerical data obtained by adding all the number values in a set of

data and then dividing that sum by the number of values in the data set. This will use to know the

average score of data.

Formula:

Σx
x−¿¿ = N

Where: x−¿¿ = mean

Σ x= sum of all data values

N= total population
Standard Deviation was computed to determine the common errors in the usage of

preposition particularly time, place and direction

Formula:

S= √ Σ¿ ¿ ¿
Where: S= standard deviation

Σ= sum of all values

x= each value in data set

x−¿¿ = mean or average

n= sample of population

Standardized testing provides quantitative data on student performance regarding preposition usage, offering a consistent measure to evaluate competencies and difficulties. Interviewing teachers adds qualitative insights into the teaching methodologies and challenges observed in the classroom. Together, these methods complement each other by combining numerical data with expert observations, creating a fuller picture of the issues. This dual approach facilitates identifying persistent problems in preposition usage and evaluating the effectiveness of current teaching methods, ultimately leading to improved instructional strategies .

Using these statistical measures allows a multi-dimensional analysis of student performance. Frequency and percentage describe how often students choose correct versus incorrect prepositions, providing an immediate overview of common challenges. The mean offers an average performance indicator, revealing overall proficiency levels. Standard deviation measures the variance around this mean, identifying the consistency of students' knowledge across the test. Together, these tools provide a detailed picture of student competencies, informing targeted educational interventions for varying proficiency levels .

Potential biases in stratified random sampling could arise from misclassification within strata or unintentional exclusion of subgroups if the stratification criteria are not thoroughly representative of the population. These might lead to inaccurate representation and biased results, such as overlooking diversity in learning needs or behaviors not captured by gender alone. Such biases can affect the study's outcomes by skewing data towards certain demographics or interpretations, which may lead to generalizations that do not account for the full spectrum of variables affecting preposition usage among students .

The research design incorporates stratified random sampling by dividing the population of Grade 7 students into gender-based strata, selecting 5 males and 5 females from each section, summing up to 10 participants per section. This method is chosen as it ensures a balanced representation of genders, addressing specific issues regarding preposition usage errors which might be different across gender lines. Stratified random sampling improves the accuracy and reliability of the data by making sure that each subgroup is adequately represented .

The cloze test questionnaire's scaling system categorizes student proficiency into "Good," "Average," "Below Average," and "Poor" based on score ranges. This classification system helps in quickly identifying students' proficiency levels, facilitating targeted analysis and individual feedback. It aligns with educational benchmarks and provides a clear visual representation of where students stand in their understanding of prepositions, enabling educators to tailor interventions and support based on specific needs and performance levels .

The descriptive method used in the study aims to gather necessary information about the current status of phenomena and describe existing variables or conditions in a situation. This method is also intended to describe the attributes for a larger population, which in this case involves Grade 7 students at Cavite National High School who are prone to committing errors in the usage of prepositions. The approach allows researchers to collect comprehensive data through standardized questionnaires and interviews to understand students' difficulties in using prepositions of time, place, and direction, enhancing educational strategies accordingly .

The standardized questionnaire serves as the main tool for collecting data in this study. It consists of two parts: the first collects demographic data to classify participants by relevant variables, while the second part is a cloze test focused on prepositions of time, place, and direction. This structure aids in evaluating the performance and difficulties of students in using prepositions, aligning directly with the study's objectives to identify and describe common errors among Grade 7 students at Cavite National High School .

Calculating standard deviation is essential for understanding the variability and frequency of errors made by students in their use of prepositions. A high standard deviation indicates a wide range of understanding and frequent errors, suggesting inconsistency in comprehension across the student body. Identifying these variations allows educators to pinpoint specific areas where students struggle, facilitating precise corrective measures and more effective resource allocation. This metric helps in differentiating between generalized issues and those affecting only a subset of students, enhancing targeted pedagogical strategies .

Analyzing frequency and percentage is crucial in understanding how participant responses are distributed across different demographic variables, enhancing the interpretability of results. Frequency reveals how often various responses or behaviors appear, while percentage provides a proportional understanding relative to the entire sample. Together, they help identify which prepositions pose the most challenges and which demographic groups struggle the most, supporting targeted educational interventions. This analysis helps confirm hypotheses about error patterns in preposition usage among students, thus providing a comprehensive overview of participant behaviors and preferences .

The use of a dual-part questionnaire allows researchers to simultaneously collect demographic data and assess preposition performance, providing a holistic view of each participant's background and language abilities. By linking demographic data with performance results, the study can reveal trends and correlations, such as whether age, gender, or educational background affects preposition usage. This approach facilitates a multifaceted analysis of factors influencing language competency, leading to more tailored educational strategies and interventions based on revealed demographic correlations and performance metrics .
