Calculus 1 Reflection and Growth

The student was initially intimidated by calculus as she had struggled with math previously. However, through the course she gained familiarity with word problems and felt her brain was able to solve intimidating problems. While it was a difficult course, the hard work paid off. The student is proud to have survived calculus and believes it is an important subject for her biology major, as scientists use calculus to prove findings regarding topics like population growth and disease spread.

Signature Assignment: Reflection Alysia Matthews

Calculus 1

At the start of this course, I must admit I was intimidated. The subject calculus was not

something I have ever been quite intrigued by, nor mathematics at all. I’ve struggled with math

my entire life, but in my adulthood, I realized that I was the one holding me back not the math.

I pick up mathematics quickly now. Coming into this course and reading the objectives I was

terrified. Derivatives, graphs, tangent, all these words scared me. Now I feel much different

now approaching the end of the semester.

The problems that I encountered with this assignment and this course is I am much

more familiar with “word” or story math problems now. This course took me on a journey

through the left side of my brain. This journey consisted of problems that looked so intimidating

on the outside, but my brain was able to solve it. I was always told how much our brain can do,

but this course opened many doors for me as far as mathematics go. This course was not an

easy course to learn, but the hard work does pay off. The reason why I am so fond of this

objective; calculus, is because this is what we use in the real world. Engineers and scientists use

calculus to calculate and prove their findings.

This course was a learning curve for me. I am majoring in Biology and like I said

previously is that scientists use calculus to prove their findings are true. I wanted to share this

example, because this demonstrates the reason why calculus is so important (at least in my

major). The use of derivatives is used to modal ecosystems, population growth, the spread of

diseases, etc. A more specific example would be trying to calculate the population of bacteria

and it doubles every hour. I am proud to say that I have survived calculus and am moving on to

Calculus II. This is all mind over matter.
