System Design
Perception :
Such as the Stem of a plant which connects it to the roots and the leaves. hence providing nutrition and growth, sy(stem) design is a similar way of
improving our society’s welfare.

Embodied Energy based Lighting for Low Cost Housing Sector :
Brief :
To come up with a systematic embodied energy lighting solution which follows aesthetics and serves the purpose for low cost housing projects at the
same time.
Purpose and Influence :
To be self aware as to what opportunities and practices could aid me as well as the few others around me, the purpose for me choosing this topic was
simple, we waste at least 4hrs of electricity on a daily basis, just on lighting which we do not really require, i took up this project to understand what I
as a designer can learn and avoid before alerting others.

Wastage of Embodied Energy
Reaons for cause :
Consumerism : Purchasing power leads to : little attention to their true need, durability, product origin, or the environmental consequences of their manufacture
and disposal of the commodity
We have mistaken money for wealth, it’s a constant battle to earn more as consumerism has changed the meaning of what it is actually to live rich.
one can even say that Richness of living is truly reflected through the excavations foud from the indus valley civiisation (bronze age).
its not whether one can do something or no, it is mainly about whether they want to?
Fruits(skinned), coconut water sold in plastic bags.
Weekly mobile launches.
Fashion
how does it make a difference ? things are going to go on the same way until we reach a point where we would have to forcefully change
Show the lifestyle you sell as a luxury masked behind simple living.
Consumerism : influence on quality of life : greed : devaluations .
Mind Soup
Giving the same topic a different perspective :
Every year, a huge amount paid for restooration of monuments which are stained by lovers, children, etc. making the rules strict has never stopped public, neither
has creating awareness. this is not just a waste of government money but also the janta,
why do they do it :
Because everyone wants to leave a mark on something immortal, valuable, heritage.
Can we stop it ? A- No , but we can divert it , for eg keeping a replica or a structure nearby the monument which welcomes couples to scribble, but it would work
only if the trust is gained that the replica would not be taken away or gotten rid off after a few years.

What is embodied Energy :
Embodied energy is the energy consumed by all of the processes associated with the production of a building, from the mining and processing of natural resources to manufacturing, trans-
port and product delivery.
Embodied energy is the energy consumed by all of the processes associated with the production of a building, from the mining and processing of natural resources to manufacturing, trans-
port and product delivery. ... A complex combination of many processed materials determines a building’s total embodied energy.
How do humans use energy?
Currently, the primary sources of energy used by humans include fuels, like coal, oil, natural gas, uranium, and biomass. All these fuels—except biomass—are nonrenewable. Primary sourc-
es of energy also include renewables, such as sunlight, wind, moving water, and geothermal energy
Why do we need energy?
Energy fuels your body’s internal functions, repairs, builds and maintains cells and body tissues, and supports the external activities that enable you to interact with the physical world. Wa-
ter, your body’s most important nutrient, helps facilitate the chemical reactions that produce energy from food
How do humans get energy?
This energy comes from the food we eat
How is the embodied energy of products caluclated ?
Embodied energy is measured as the quantity of non-renewable energy per unit of building material, component or system. It is expressed in megajoules (MJ) or gigajoules (GJ) per unit
weight (kg or tonne) or area (m2) but the process of calculating embodied energy is complex and involves numerous sources of data
Does it take less energy to make an energy-saving light bulb than a normal bulb?
Compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) contain more embodied energy than conventional incandescent bulbs. Embodied energy refers to all the costs involved in sourcing, manufacturing and
recycling the units. CFLs use about the same amount of glass and metals as conventional bulbs, but they also contain plastic and electronics. These bump up the embodied energy to about
five times that of incandescent bulbs. However, CFLs last eight times as long and consume half as much electricity, easily offsetting the extra manufacturing energy burden.

what is low cost housing
Building with what is available, without compromising it’s strength and durability.
Stigma revolving the low cost housing : Points and questions generally raised :
The Term Low Cost gives it a bad first impression
Big builders like Lodha not practicing it : Eg. commoners look at Lodha houses as god tier and loose confidence do not want to settle for less
Lack of education to the buyer : Contained awareness
Geographical problems : People migrate to city for ‘better job prospects’ even though the conditions there are worst for beginners : Densly populated areas would
not have space for traditional housing projects : Ex, Dadar in bombay
Hipster image : the people educated about these factors come across as hipsters to the normal public : Example, Auroville
Difference between rich and poor : Is low cost housing only for the poor ? : why do we not see more of the rich practicing it .
Drifting apart from nature : Problems like mosquiteos become unberable : snake : insects etc.
Laurie Baker : Low Cost Housing Projects
Laurie Baker (2 March 1917 – 1 April 2007) was a British-born Indian architect, renowned for his initiatives in cost-effective energy-efficient architecture and
designs that maximized space, ventilation and light and maintained an uncluttered yet striking aesthetic sensibility. He was a pioneer of sustainable architecture
as well as organic architecture, incorporating in his designs even in the late 1960s, concepts such as rain-water harvesting, minimizing usage of energy-inefficient
building materials, minimizing damage to the building site and seamlessly merging with the surroundings.
Potential Briefs after Research
(making people realise what good lighting can mean)
(1) Cutting off unnecessary lights , that is whether bulbs are the only solution
(2) Is additional lighting even necessary, other than for directional and viewing purpose
(3) can the walls form an aesthetic through their patterns in low lighting
Potential Briefs
Internal lighting made out of eco friendly materials
Integrated embodied wall system with natural lighting and built aesthetics
Embodied energy range of accessories which can be disposed without causing harm to well-being
Final Selected Brief :
Integrated embodied wall system with natural lighting and built aesthetics
Inclusions and Focus :
Should be majorly Brick or Clay made .
Encompasses Sunlight and provides good ventillation
Should be aesthetically structured
Accompanying accesories not to be made out of new materials.
Focus :
Surrounding walls , i.e Exterior Walls (bedroom and hall)
- Privacy, Walls should breathe, should influence the user to have minimal wall light-
ing
Solution : the negatives of the wall patterns can include oil based diyas
Suggested solution : reflective surfaces facing the floor and roof, such that they do not
hit the user’s eyes.
glass Bottles, pens bodies Shells can act as filler lighting in big gaps.
Philosophy : A house should be welcoming, after a stressful day, if you enter a very
bright room, you won’t feel any difference, hence apart from table lamps, lighting
should be diffused throughout.
Focus two
Partition walls
the partition walls between the rooms can be formed as per wish,
Patterns for this wall can define the space in between.
Bedroom :
Privacy
Talking is better in the dark, Should influence user to sleep
