MSW Generation Calculation for 2000 Homes

This document provides information about calculating residential solid waste generation rates from a town with 2000 homes. It describes waste collection data from a local transfer station over one week, including the number and volume of compactor trucks and flatbed trucks used. It also provides typical waste composition percentages and specific weights to use in calculations. The questions ask to [1] determine the total weight of residential waste generated in one week, and [2] calculate the unit waste generation rate per capita based on an assumption of 5 people per home.

Solid Waste Management SWM411S

Assignment 1

MSW: WASTE GENERATION RATE

Lecturer: Dr G C Cloete
Email address:
Office number: E/3/4.227
The unit-weight of weekly residential solid waste
Problem 1:

Information: A town has 2000 homes, determine the residential unit-waste generation
per week.
The following observations were made at a local transfer station which receives all the
waste collected for disposal. The observation period was one week:

• The number of Compactor truck loads = 15

• The size of a compactor truck = 20 m3
• Number of flatbed loads = 20
• Average flatbed volume = 2 m3
• Number of loads from individual residents private cars/bakkies = 50
• Estimated volume per domestic vehicle = 0.25 m3

Tips: Use the typical weight distribution (%)data for domestic waste from Table 3.4 in
the Week 3 presentation (From Tchobanoglous, G., Theisen, H., & Vigil, S. Integrated
solid waste management. New York: McGraw-Hill).
Use the specific weight data in the table provided on the next slide.

For this problem, assume that a compactor truck compacts the municipal waste to
400kg/m3
The unit-weight of weekly residential solid waste
Use the following specific weight data:
Waste components Specific weight in kg/m3
Food waste 300
Paper 100
Cardboard 60
Plastics 60
Textiles 60
Rubber 140
Leather 150
Yardwaste 100
Wood 250
Glass 200
Tin cans 100
Aluminium 155
Other metal 330
Ash etc 500

Use hand calculations on an A4 sheet. Scan and post your answer sheet on the moodle
platform.

Question 1: Determine the weight of residential waste generated for the area in one
week. (answer in tonnes per week).

Question 2: Determine the unit waste generation rate per capita, based on an
assumption that each house has five (5) people living in it. (This is kg/c/day based on
all the waste collected in one week)
