Captain Fantastic ( 2016 )
The film Captain Fantastic was directed by Matt Ross. In its cast are actors
Viggo Mortensen as Ben Cash , Annalise Basso as Vespyr Cash and
George MacKay as “Bo” Cash. The film won the best director award at the
Cannes Film Festival, also won in the Satellite Awards the statuette for best
actor-drama.
The film is about the Cash family. Ben and his wife Leslie decide to remove
their children (Vespyr, Bodeban, Kielir, Rellian, Zaja and Nai) from a life of
the "traditional" world in a [Link] family create their own society similar
to the idea of the Platonic Republic a society without its own possessions to
avoid the love of wealth avoiding injustice and an intensive education both in
the physical and the intellectual aspect properly. Leslie dies and her father
Jack wishes to have a traditional funeral, which contradicts Leslie's wishes
written in his will, thus causing Ben to disagree. Directly, his children will be
forced to face the real world to which they were prepared ... or not?
The quality of a drama film is difficult to identify, however, some starting
points for me would be: the originality of the ending and the way in which it is
reached; In addition, as for any film, the construction of the characters is
vital.
The characters in this movie, despite their unique and wild nature, generate
shocking and unexpected scenes, if you skipped 40 seconds ahead of the
movie at any point, you might miss out on an important scene with unique
hues. The performance of the cast is incredible, making you feel a part in
every feeling that each one of them has. The film is accompanied by a
simple but accurate Soundtrack, which in the end projects great importance.
In my opinion Matt Ross does not fully achieve it with some characters, while
with the father it is clear that he is arrogant and impatient but also warm and
understanding or to "Bo" as a brave and loyal young man. but at the same
time with its own character; one of the twins, Kielyr and even Nai, it is not
possible to fully understand her character.
There is a scene where Kielyr explains the novel "Lolita" ( Written by
Russian Vladimir Nabokov ) that she is reading and says: "There's this old
man who loves this girl and she's only 12 years old ... it's written from his
perspective, you sort of understand and sympathize with him which is kind of
amazing because he's essentially a child molester but his love for her is
beautiful. " Generally speaking that is my own perspective on Ben,
essentially he is a more developed hippie that forces his children to follow
his thinking, but the way he does it and with his own criteria is spectacular.
Without a doubt he is my favorite character.
For a moment, there were scenes that reminded me of Will Smith's
performance in "The Pursuit of Happiness." The watery eyes of a father
devoted to his son, who at times realizes that he has made a mistake in his
actions, despite being honest. Comparing a performance to Will Smith is
synonymous with greatness and there are no better words to say about it.
In accordance with the above, I highly recommend the movie Captain
Fantastic, a handkerchief ready to cry at times, the heart for suspenseful
scenes and even the occasional unsuspecting laugh. In addition, the general
reception from viewers was good: On the Rotten Tomatoes website it has an
82% acceptance ranking based on 170 reviews. On Metacritic, the film has a
score of 72 out of 100, based on 36 reviews, indicating "generally favorable
reviews" and even received a 10-minute ovation at the Cannes Film Festival.
