BSE-English 2A Ethics (GEC 008)
Module 1: Elaborate
1. Imagine a scenario in which an image of someone who is the object of religious
devotion (such as Jesus Christ or Mary, the Mother of Jesus) is placed side by
side with a phallic image. Is this an ethical issue? Why or why not?
- Yes, for me it is an ethical issue. I know that artist, normal people, or everyone
of us, is all free to do or create an art depending on our emotions or ideas that
we wanted to convey. But we always have to remember that the viewers or the
people that will see the art that we created will appreciated by some, but some
people will not. And as a Roman Catholic, I find that image or art disrespectful
for me. It did not just disrespect me as a member of a Roman Catholic Church
but it also disrespects entire religion. It is an ethical issue for me because, I find
it really insulting and disrespectful to the religion I belong to. If we want to create
an art we have to make sure that we will not use any objects of religious
devotion of any religion as our subject specially if it negative just to avoid hurting
them and their religion.
2. Does the question of the rightness or wrongness of this depend on which religion
you belong to? Explain your answer.
- My answer would be yes and no. I think in some point the rightness or
wrongness depends on the religion we belong. If the religion you belong to
believes that it is okay or right to insult and disrespect other religion, because
it is against their teachings. Some of the people that belong to that religion will
surely absorb it and apply it to others, because they believe that is what right
but for others it is actually wrong. But not all the time, rightness or wrongness
depends to our religion. Sometimes rightness or wrongness depends on us.
We all know that we human beings have our own thinking or perspective about
something. Sometimes, even if our religion told us the right or wrong things that
we should or we should not do, at the end we’re still the one who will decide if
we will follow it or not. If we think that our religion’s teaching is not right, then
we will normally not follow it. And even if our religion teaches us the right things,
we tend to disobey or follow it because of our own will.
