NETIQUETTE - IMPORTANT OR NOT ?

Nowadays, the use of the social network has become popular among varieties
of age groups, genders, especially dominates teenager's habit. Take our country as
an example. In 2018, Vietnam has 64 millions people using the Internet, which
accounts for 67% of the population. With over half of the citizens use Facebook,
Vietnam is also one of the top 10 countries in which social network is used the most
in the world and this number is projected to rise significantly in the next decade. This
means of communication not only bring about merits in every aspect of our daily
lives but also have negative implication on tremedous users. How to use this network
correctly is still a challenging puzzle to solve in the situation of modern society.
Social network is undeniably much more complicated than we have thought.
Given the rise of cybercriminal activity in recent years, the need to stay safe on the
Internet has never been more pronounced. Recently there were numerous fights
between students, a great majority of which were believed to stemmed from online
conflict. This burning situation has raised the alarm bell for all of us

for contagion or copycat events; sharing information about suicide methods;
encouragement to engage in suicidal behaviour; and the normalisation of suicide-

At the social scale, according to experts, social networks are also leaving

propagating depraved culture, agitation, conflicts ... Many people use social
networks don't even need to read, understand, but still share and comment on the
majority. This "culture" is leading to new trends and standards that have a negative
impact on the general standards of society. A report on cyber bullying on 2014 gives
the following troublesome conclusions: 25% of teenagers report that they have
experienced repeated bullying, 52% off young people report being cyber bullied
but 95% of teens who witnessed bullying on social media report they have ignored
the behavior. Obviously, Internet-related crimes have become a new and rapidly
growing genre of crime, or cybercrime, and teenagers and adults are accidentally or
intentionally becoming victims or culprits

So there comes the Netiquette

Netiquette – the combination of the words "net and "etiquette". It is defined as a set of
rules acceptable when communicating over computer networks, especially the
Internet. Netiquette is especially important in this day and age where almost
everyone is involved with some sort of social media platform.
Using netiquette will ultimately lessen the chances of a misunderstanding or
argument with a fellow cyberspace member. Many of social media's problem could
be easily corrected by maintaining a balance between email and face to face
communication. By applying netiquette, people can diminish corporate
embarrassment, boost teamwork and employee energy, and breed positive emotion.
With online communication, it is important to remember, nobody is immune to
miscommunication and good netiquette techniques can minimize hurt feelings,
relationships, and embarrassing moments.
Following netiquette guidelines can help you maintain a positive
online presence.
 Adhere to the same standards of behavior online that you follow in real
life
 Do not reveal sensitive information online
 Dedicately respect others
 Make yourself look good online
 Help keep flame wars under control
 Make sure you are clear in your objective
 Never use sarcasm or humor that could be taken in a harmful or
offensive way.
 Be careful when dealing with information from unknown sources
 Share, But Don’t Overshare
 Different Platforms, different cultures, Different Etiquette
 Report illegal activities or offending content

In the nutshell, netiquette is crucial. You need to ensure that Netiquette


practices are amended and modified with regard to changing technological
developments. If you are not keeping abreast of Netiquette changes, it can make you
outdated and vulnerable to online risks. Netiquettes teaches us to be good and
advise others to be good and consider everyone online. Some ill-informed teenagers
have misused the Internet for wrong things. Let’s bring in a change by using the
Internet effectively and promoting the importance of Netiquettes to everyone.
